I quite like the Ramones but never really think of them as punk - more a 70s Beach Boys You also thought Busted were an indie band.

They were not manufactured, they wrote their own songs and played instruments.. They were like a British Blink 182 / Fountains of Wayne / Bowling for soup

They might not have been on independent labels but that wasn't what anyone called Indie anymore.
True you might hear Radio X play Blink 182 songs and you will never hear them play Busted or McFly but that's more a snobbish attitude than anything else really.

Also the music isn't what anyone else would call indie...

Why are we calling pop-punk indie?

On what planet were Busted an indie band? They were formed by auditions by a major label!

On what planet were Busted an indie band? They were formed by auditions by a major label! on the planet where in the 3000 they live underwater. "indie" isn't a genre though. It annoyed me when I used to see "top 40" as a genre but it seems the Americans were obsessed with genres and forced you to tag them into mp3s. It was quite useful in music search up to a point, but there was so much just labelled as "alternative". Of course we were probably used to radio stations that played all sorts of music whilst Americans had a clear divide between rock music stations and disco stations that it led to "that" anti-disco disc-smashing event in 1979 led by a DJ who had lost his job when the radio station he worked for decided to switch to disco. In 2002 "pop" music generally meant a manufactured boy or girl band and maybe Busted were formed via auditions but so have many other bands been - e.g. Erasure came into being when Vince Clarke put in an audition for a singer after Alison Moyet went solo and Andy Bell was one of those who applied and was chosen. I featured Scouting For Girls in my "get real music back into the charts" campaign in 2010 but that was on 1 April and was intended as an "April Fool" joke.

So either Busted make that style of music or they don't, regardless of whether they were formed via a record company audition or not. If not, then Blink 182 are also not indie. And probably they're not, nor Bowling For Soup or Fountains Of Wayne, they're just pop-rock bands.
But in 2002 anything that was slightly rock-based was often labelled indie.
In my era (late 70s / early 80s) that would never have been labelled indie but there were questions as to what labels were given to music, in fact nobody appears to really know what "new wave" is. I always thought it means post-punk, i.e. Blondie and the like, and certainly not synth-based music like the Human League, which was part of the "new romantic" era.
In spite of half-inventing it, punk and post-punk never really made it into the US chart.
And the Ramones were a 70s surf-music band, not punk. That's what I hear when I listen to them anyway.

so they're not indie but are they rock enough to enter into Rock Idol.
And will anyone be brave enough to try entering one of their songs if there's a round where they fit the theme?
(They definitely should fit the first round assuming they released some albums as they would have opening tracks)

ROUND 5 - Pyramid Stage Round: Playing the pyramid stage at Glastonbury has to be the highlight of any bands career, here enter your favourite live performance from any year at Glastonbury, so think smart because we will be judging this round on the live performance rather than the studio version of the song Something a bit different here, obviously it still has to be in the sprit of the rock theme but we will be in the festival spirit this round so might be a bit more generous in what we allow here with it being a festival round, just to clarify the only criteria here is "a live Glastonbury performance" so feel free to enter songs from any of the hundred stages, this one should be fun but might take a bit more research

Good idea for a round! I like that the focus will be on the live performance - we don't have to think about that as a disadvantage for once.
