Considering four of my favourite albums from the last year are included, I'm a little disappointed with the overall list.
1. Sam Fender 2. Self Esteem 3. Joy Crookes 4. Harry Styles 5. Wet Leg or Yard Act

Sam Fender would be the frontrunner by miles if I had a vote. Though I also really liked a few of these most notably Wet Leg.

Thought Foals would have been included but can’t argue with half of these. Great to see a metal album included even if I suspect it has a lot more to with ‘diversity’ than the genre but Nova Twins are a good band. But in reality it’s Wet Leg’s to lose

Little Simz to win or maybe Gwenno, they're the ones being pushed at the moment...

There’s nothing that stands out for me there at all. It’s the same overhyped ‘next big thing’ names

I can definitely see Little Simz winning.
I preferred the stuff off the first Nova Twins album but overall, it seems a decent shortlist to me.

Cold Years, Frank Turner, Sherlocks, Mysterines and Daytime TV off the top of my head Mysterines are a good shout they get a lot of support from BBC so yes they shoudl be here. Cold Years are great but a bit too much under the radar sadly.

I have to say this is a mostly great set of nominations. Every year, I assemble a list of 12 albums which I expect/predict to make the list (in terms of my view & critical acclaim). Which I posted in advance on a US based music website:
In order of most to least likely to be nominated I predicted:
Little Simz - Sometimes I Might be Introvert Self Esteem - Prioritise Pleasure Sam Fender - Seventeen Going Under Wet Leg - Wet Leg Black Country, New Road - Ants from Up There The Mysterines - Reeling Joy Crookes - Skin
Fontaines DC - Skinty Fia Dave - We're All Alone in This Together
Harry Styles - Harry's House Yola - Stand For Myself
Gwenno - Tresor
I'll mention I love the latest albums by Florence + The Machine; & Foals but thought they would not make the shortlist. Whilst I'm a fan of the Jessie Buckley/Bernard Butler album I have to say it does feel a bit Laura Marling meets Anna Calvi cosplay. Fair play, to Nova Twins making the list, but I can imagine Bring Me The Horizon and their fanbase will be fuming at never getting nominated before. As Dave won for his debut I can see why he lost out to Kojey Radical this year for a nomination even though I personally think his second album was very good.
I'm most scratching my head at Yard Act getting nominated over The Mysterines; & no Fontaines DC nomination. I guess Black Country, New Road are too hipster and rock for the Mercury Music Awards panel.
I'm most delighted to see Gwenno finally get nominated for her third non English language album of surreal Electronica folk; only 16 years after her former band's almost eponymous debut album was outrageously snubbed, when most critics thought it was a shoe in for a nomination, let alone to win that year. Pleased to see Harry Styles superb modern yet future-past pop album make the shortlist to annoy music snobs.
Any of my top three are worthy winners, but Little Simz deserves to take it for its cinematic British rap sound; and very direct personal lyrics.

The expected outcome, and it definitely is a quality record, just not my cup of tea so I'm not thrilled by the outcome. I'll put this winner in the same bucket as Let England Shake - objectively, an album I know is brilliant, but I just find unenjoyable.

A very well-deserved winner.
