A better game than the scoreline suggests with Tunisia the better side for long periods. Their hearts were in their mouths in stoppage time when the referee reviewed a potential handball that would've given Denmark a penalty but unusually, the referee didn't change his mind.

A duller game than the previous goalless draw. Neither side created much, the best chance being a Robert Lewandowski penalty for Poland which was saved by Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa.

The Tunisia game, he gave the earlier push as a foul or he would have given the penalty for handball, the push gave him a get out My timer was 4:47 for this game, 5 mins added, 5:37 for the Mexico game (although I may have dozed off) 6 mins added. They seem pretty spot on with it, let's hope France Oz gets us back to the goals!

What a skocker for Argentina - they'll probably go on and win it now!

I remember Argentina lost their first group game in 1990 to Cameroon, but they still reached the final.

I remember Argentina lost their first group game in 1990 to Cameroon, but they still reached the final. After two penalty shoot-outs and another dodgy handball incident. Possibly the worst team to reach a World Cup final (though Germany in 2002 are in that debate).

France survived a scare against Australia, going behind inside 10 minutes but their quality soon told and they took control to run out comfortable winners. Olivier Giroud scored twice to reach 51 international goals - equalling Thierry Henry's record for France. Les Bleus become the first defending champions to win their opening match since Brazil in 2006.

John Hartson "They'll probably be about 20 minutes of added time now, they add it on for substitutions and when people are down injured now!" Isn't that what added time is for?

Blooming ITV commentator was going bananas when we went past 8 minutes in the Saudi game, despite the fact there had been another injury and substitution. That's Sam Matterface for you but at least he saw the gravity of the situation at the time of the Saudi Arabia defender who went down in that stoppage time and calmed the situation after the Argentina chance. The Saudi GK looked devastated but hopefully the defender is OK.
However it's a good point about extra time being added to stoppage time. If they're adding on every second of time in stoppage, surely it's beneficial to put something up which tells us how much extra time will be played rather than having to 2nd guess how much more time is being played after stoppage, especially if there's over 5 mins of stoppage time added.
I'm sure it's a debate that's been talked about before (e.g. Fergie time) but the excessive stoppage times in this world cup has highlighted this for me a bit more.
Only match I watched in full today was the Poland / Mexico match. A real stop start game and Mexico looked like the team who wanted it the most but a lack of quality from both sides in the final 3rd. Never heard of Pien Meulensteen before but thought she did a decent job lead commentating.

I thought Pien Meulensteen was pretty good too. I first became aware of her during the women's Euros this year. She's the daughter of Rene Meulensteen, who was a coach under Alex Ferguson at Man U and briefly managed Fulham. He's also part of the Australia coaching staff at this tournament. It makes Pien's commentary more impressive given English isn't her first language, though she has spent most of her life here.

Another shock as Japan come from behind to beat the 4-time champions. Germany led through a Gundogan penalty but poor finishing cost them as Japan made changes and scored twice in the second half. It's the second World Cup in a row in which Germany have lost their opening game and they will now need to get something against Spain in their next game to avoid another early exit.

So far England, Netherlands and France have impressed me significantly among the fancied teams. Argentina and Germany have started with embarrassing defeats.
Not yet seen Brazil or Belgium.

Classic understatement from the itv presenter just now “we saw a bit of a shock yesterday” Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1 and that’s a “bit of a shock” sorry you obviously have no idea about football!

Spain have been quite dominant so far against Costa Rica and have a 1-0 lead. We'll see if they can get the job done comfortably.
