Netherlands were awful in their first game. Senegal will be kicking themselves that they lost that game. The sign of a great team is even when they play badly they get the job done and win. Spain have been quite dominant so far against Costa Rica and have a 1-0 lead. We'll see if they can get the job done comfortably. I don't disagree with that but you said you were impressed. There was nothing impressive about their performance.

Spain are totally destroying Costa Rica. Costa Rica did well in the 2014 world cup but they're terrible today.

Spain achieve their biggest ever World Cup victory in a match they dominated from start to finish.

If the ITV commentator was correct (a BIG if), Spain only scored almost as many goals today as they did in the whole tournament when they won it.

A below-par Belgium start with a win against a Canada team who were the better side for much of the game but struggled to test Thibault Courtois. Courtois saved an Alphonso Davies penalty before Michy Batshuayi scored the only goal against the run of play just before half-time. Canada, managed by Englishman John Herdman, are yet to score a goal at the World Cup.

Switzerland started with a win over Cameroon in the day's opening game. Breel Embolo scored the only goal against the country of his birth, refusing to celebrate. It is Cameroon's eighth consecutive defeat at the World Cup. The final game of the day saw favourites Brazil get off to a winning start. They had to be patient against Serbia but turned on the style in the second half with Richarlison scoring both goals, the second of which was arguably the goal of the tournament so far.

Uruguay hit the woodwork twice against South Korea but couldn't find a way through. Portugal's game against Ghana sprang into life in the second half after Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at five World Cups and Ghana almost earned themselves a point at the death when Inaki Williams sneaked up to dispossess keeper Diogo Costa but slipped before he could slot the ball home.

Never a penalty in the Portugal game! I always say, if the ref hadn't given it, var wouldn't have overturned it. They should have let him have a look and decide if there was enough contact worthy of a penalty? Typical Ronaldo, always cheating!

A deserved win for Iran who scored twice deep into stoppage time to pick up their first ever World Cup win against a European team. Wales had goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey sent off for a Schumacher-like challenge and must now get something against England in their final game to stand any chance of progressing.
