Metallica have returned with their first new song in more than six years, “Lux Æterna” — the lead single from the band’s just announced new studio album, 72 Seasons.
"72 Seasons" will be available April 14, 2023 via the band's own Blackened Recordings. Produced by Greg Fidelman with METALLICA's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and clocking in at over 77 minutes, the 12-track "72 Seasons" is METALLICA's first full length collection of new material since 2016's "Hardwired…To Self-Destruct".
Speaking on the concept of the album title, Hetfield says: "72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry."
The complete track listing for "72 Seasons" is:
01. 72 Seasons 02. Shadows Follow 03. Screaming Suicide 04. Sleepwalk My Life Away 05. You Must Burn! 06. Lux Æterna 07. Crown Of Barbed Wire 08. Chasing Light 09. If Darkness Had A Son 10. Too Far Gone? 11. Room Of Mirrors 12. Inamorata

After a couple of plays, I do like the album. It's not earth-shattering stuff but no-one should be expecting that from Metallica at this point in their career. My main criticism is that almost all the songs could have been reduced in length by 1-2 minutes without really losing anything. That said of the unreleased tracks there are a couple of bangers; I really like 'Inamorata' despite what I just said and it being the longest one

Yeh just played it a short time ago, it’s a bit too long but going by the best tracks it is very good, I would say their best since ‘The Black Album’ but that’s only if you cut out some of the filler and also it’s not saying much.
Also would have liked at least one ballad

Yeah, a ballad or two would have offered some much-needed variety to make the length of this thing more bearable (no laughing at the back, this is a family forum )I'm hearing good things about the Overkill album which came out on the same day but I haven't got around to that one yet. The title track left me a little uninspired.
