Well we all knew this was coming but it will be in a different format. When I did my best of 80s singles I separated each year into separate countdowns and I will do the same for the albums. Its just too hard comparing albums from 1980 which are very new to me with albums from 1988 or 1989 that I have played for over 30 years. So the first list will be 1980. I actually struggled to make a top 100, the quality or more what is my taste drops off fast. There are great albums in the lower places but they are just maybe not for me. But most years from 1984 onwards have way too much music so Top 100 it will be. I still have about 20 albums to play and then I will start this list so hopefully by the end of the weekend. Finally apologies if your favourites dont make it, I cant listen to everything in a month and some acts are just not for me. Yes every album I have listened to either the whole thing, most of each track or at worst rushed through the last few only albums that I already decided this isn’t going to score high. I am aiming to do a new Top 100 for each year every month at least so hopefully, it will be done in about 9 months. 1980 rateyourmusic.com/list/THORNEYONE/my-favourite-albums-of-1980/1981 rateyourmusic.com/list/THORNEYONE/my-favourite-albums-of-1981/1982 rateyourmusic.com/list/THORNEYONE/my-favourite-albums-of-1982/

Sue Wilkinson - Looking For Cover is my favourite album from 1980 year.

Four solo females in my top 100 and I bet you can guess one of those, Donna Summer was also in the running but her album was awful sadly. I assume you don't like her anyway.

ok 1980 is ready to go, we have some late additions and a bit of a reshuffle but this is the most work I have put into these lists so its as accurate as its going to get, lets kick off with the act that just miss out.

101 The B52s - Wild PlanetFor me The B52s are more of a singles band, listening to a whole album is hard work and that's the main reason this misses out, I can't enjoy it as a record. If I was to hear some of these tracks on their own on 6Music say, I probably wouldn't turn over, others are just too annoying. It was a decent success for them though reaching #18 in the UK & US. 2/5

100 Judas Priest - British Steel
One of the first heavy metal bands I ever heard and even at the age of 9, I noticed they were quite different from the usual long haired head bangers. This was their 6th album and I would say the one that really brought them into the mainstream with two top 20 hit singles including their most famous song 'Breaking The Law'. It was also their first hit album in the US reaching #34 and their biggest album ever in the UK reaching #4. Its a classic of the genre but its not really for me although I do appreciate the highlights. 2/5

99 The Skids - The Absolute GameA band I didn't know at the time apart from the song 'Into The Valley' and it wasn't until many years later I discovered they were Stuart Adamson's first band, I was a pretty big Big Country fan as well. This was their third album and it was all new to me, it doesn't have any of their more familiar songs but it was their highest charting album reaching #9 in the UK . It didn't make a big impression a few songs I thought were good but not on the level of their previous singles but maybe if I did this list again in 10 years it may fair better. 2.5/5

98 Status Quo - Just Supposin'On the other extreme this album was very familiar to me. Status Quo were one of the most popular bands in the area I grew up, they were never off the jukebox. This album has a great lead single 'What You're Proposing' but in the end its a Status Quo record, you know what you are going to get. It was their thirteenth album and reached #2 in the UK. 2.5/5

97 Paul McCartney - McCartney IIThis one was quite disappointing, this was his 2nd solo album and even the lead single 'Coming Up' didn't sound as good as I remembered it, I think the quality and production on this album was very poor. It's fine song wise but not likely to listen to it again. It reached #1 in the UK and #3 in the US. 2.5/5

96 Sammy Hagar - Danger ZoneWe will have quite a lot from Van Halen related artists on these lists. This one didn't blow me away at all. Again its maybe just me and this very early 80s rock/metal sound isn;t my favourite but I just found this very generic. The public agreed as it only reached #85 in the US. This was his 5th solo record. 2.5/5

95 INXS - INXSThis is their debut album and it is very odd, very new wave and very all over the place. Michael sounds great on some tracks but the weird genre mixes and lack of the hooks we will come to expect is jarring. It was one of two INXS albums that I had never heard before this month so that wouldn't have helped, think you would need to have lived with this record at the time to appreciate it. It reached #27 in Australia. 2.5/5

The songs 'On a bus' and 'Just keep walking' are 2 of my absolute favourites of theirs now!

94 Cheap Trick - All Shook Up
I like a lot of Cheap Trick stuff but I found this album pretty mid, nowhere close to the level of their previous record 'Dream Police' which would be much higher when I get round to doing 1979. This was their fifth album and it is maybe a bit too quirky and their Elvis love can irritate as well. It reached #24 in the US. 2.5/5

93 Rod Stewart - Foolish Behaviour
Another act who has done better and will go on to do better as well later in the decade. None of the singles on this are particularly memorable its all pretty much Faces like pub rock, and only one single made the top 20 in the Uk & US which reflects this. It's fine but not one of his ouevre that anyone needs to check out. It reached #4 in the UK and #12 in the US, it was his tenth album. 2.5/5

92 Joe Jackson - Beat Crazy
Yes so far 1980 has been one of those years, yet another act with a weak album compared to their previous album and their next one to come. This is decent but 'I'm The Man' and 'Night And Day' are both next level compared to 'Beat Crazy', his 3rd album. So many acts releasing a record annually must be affecting the quality. So yes it flopped reaching just #42 in the UK and #41 in the US and no certification. 3/5

91 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Against The Wind
I wouldn't say I was much of a Bob Seger fan, he is perfectly listenable but when I am playing older music, his tracks don't come up very often on my playlists. I liked it but I really don't rememeber much about it, it was pleasant AM radio rock. This was his eleventh album and it was a pretty big success in the US spawing multiple hit singles including the title track which reached #5. This record gave him his first and only US chartopper, going 5x platinum. It reached #26 in the UK. 3/5

90 Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Sorry that I am not sounding super positive yet but I like everything on this list just a #90 later on will be much stronger for me. This though is a metal classic and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I am listening to way more metal these days and Finn Mcgenty is widening my appreacation of this era of metal which I pretty much tried to ignore at the time and in high school. This was their 9th album and it went to #9 in the UK and #28 in the US 3/5

89 Ramones - End of the Century
They are probably past their best now but if you like what you have heard from Ramones there is no reason why you wouldnt enjoy this album, it's them doing their thing. But it does include their biggest hit in the UK which was 'Baby I Love You' which yes is fun and all that but hardly an essential Ramones track. That helped this album to be their biggest hit though reaching #14 in the Uk and #44 in the US but it's still outsold by their classic debut record. 3/5

88 Motorhead - Ace Of Spades
More heavy metal but it is the last one to make the list, there is still some heavy records to come but I wouldn't call them metal really. Like many people my generation I heard or saw them on 'The Young Ones'. That song of course was something special and an all time classic but the whole album is great as well, not what I would chose to listen often but it still has fire over 40 years later. 3/5

85 The Jacksons - Triumph
Ahh see I can be diverse but to be fair, I listened to quite a bit of disco/soul for this but most I only really liked the big hit, trying to assess records as a whole rather than being carried by one big tune. And yes this album kicks of with a massive tune 'Can You Feel It' but it stays pretty near to that quality all the way through. This album and the ones either side returned them to the level of fame they had as The Jackson 5 helped a lot by Michael's solo megastardom. This album reached #10 in the Us and #13 in the UK 3/5
