84 Def Leppard - On Through The Night
Normal service resumes. I know not a lot is said about their debut album but until I listened to it I never really knew why. This is not the Def Leppard that we will know, the vocals are indistinct, the band sound like a dozen other faceless NWOBHM bands. Everything is just filler, made for US radio. Def Leppard will get better much better, this though is very very average. I think they put more effort into the logo and album cover. The album was a hit though and reached #15 in the Uk and #51 in the US. 3/5

85 Bad Manners - Ska 'n' B
Another act that I remember vividly from my childhood, they were always great on TOTP. Ska of course still huge in 1980 but straying a bit too much into novelty but then they always did. The least cool of the Ska bands from this era but definitely one of the most fun. This was actually their debut that surprised me and reached #34 in the UK 3/5

84 The Associates - The Affectionate Punch
Now we have the indie darlings and post punkers from Dundee. I have always wanted to like The Associates more than I do but Billy Mackenzie's voice can be beautiful and like chalk on a black board at the same time on many of their songs. This was their debut album and it lacks any hits but it still has the sound that we know them for. They will add a bit more pop magic to their later records but this album is still interesting at least. 3/5

83 The Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue
Not the best album we will hear from them in the 80s but it did return them to major chart success especially in the US. It's fine and has a few highlights but not really for me. It did reach #1 in the UK and US, the first to do so on this list. Awful sleeve art as well. 3/5

82 The Undertones - Hynotised
This was their second album and like many records in the vinyl age a game of two halves but in this case the A side is very ordinary and workmanlike for a band who were the hottest thing in punk rock just one year earlier. But the flip side really picks things up and brings in a lot more hooks and clever lyrics. So maybe its another rushed record, these annual albums in this period are quite common. But it still gave them their biggest album reaching #6 in the UK. 3/5

81 Buggles - The Age Of Plastic
I said I was not going to include albums that are carried by one huge song but thats not completely true. Yes without 'Video Killed The Radio Star', this album would probably have not made the list but I really liked what I heard here amd they were all new to me but that is the power of Trevor Horn. Its just promises for what is to come, hints of a new era of pop music which is going to explode any moment. The album went to #27 in the UK 3/5

Four solo females in my top 100 and I bet you can guess one of those Kate Bush. Maybe Streisand, but I will be very surprised. There are not many hit albums from female singers in UK 1980 chart and obvioulsly you will not include Lena Martell, Marti Webb and Barbara Dickson in top 100. Maybe we will see Hazel O'Connor here, she had a big hit in Earl Purple chart.

I’m not going into detailed track analysis until maybe the top 20 but it was the only song I knew so it had an advantage so probably my favourite but it still wouldn’t make my top 10 80s Rolling Stones songs

80 Queen - Flash Gordon
I thought this was going to be much higher but didnt know that 'Flash's Theme' is the only real song here, the rest is very fun but I hoped there would be more full songs. This was their 9th album and it raeched #10 in the Uk and #23 in the US. 3/5

79 Stevie Wonder - Hotter Than July
Another of Neil's Haven Factor acts and this is a solid album, he has done much better and much much worse, its ok overall although I couldn't listen to 'Happy Birthday' but the other singles are great. This was already his 19th album and reached #2 in the UK and #3 in the US. 3/5

78 New Musik - From A to B
The English synthpop hroup are pretty mcuh considered one hit wonders but they actually had 2 other top 40 hits apart from 'Living On Numbers'. It is the best track yes but this is a good debut album that is probably overlooked. It reached #35 in the UK 3/5

77 Steely Dan - Gaucho
The last album they released before reforming in 1997 and I like it but its a bit too jazzy for me prefer their earlier stuff for sure. It was a big hit in US reaching #9 and seling over 1 million copies, it got to #27 here.

76 The Psychedelic Furs - The Psychedelic Furs
First of many appearances for them and this is their debut record, its fine, they will get much better but the promise is there especially on 'Sister Europe'.

I had to make a speech in 1990 and used the the title of one of their songs from this album as my speech title "Living By Numbers".

85 The Jacksons - Triumph
Ahh see I can be diverse but to be fair, I listened to quite a bit of disco/soul for this but most I only really liked the big hit, trying to assess records as a whole rather than being carried by one big tune. And yes this album kicks of with a massive tune 'Can You Feel It' but it stays pretty near to that quality all the way through. This album and the ones either side returned them to the level of fame they had as The Jackson 5 helped a lot by Michael's solo megastardom. This album reached #10 in the Us and #13 in the UK 3/5 I love this album. It's probably their most solid as a group.

Interesting just after we were discussing the Rolling Stones, Queen and Stevie Wonder came up, with Kate Bush having been mentioned too. Wondering if Madness, Bon Jovi or Elvis Costello would come up next..
"Happy Birthday" was Stevie Wonder's biggest ever hit in my chart. Spent 6 weeks at #1 in 1981, keeping Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" off the top in the process. That and "Sir Duke" both finished #2 of the year.
"Songs In The Key Of Life" and "Hotter Than July" are to me his two most classic albums. In between was the rather poor "Journey Into The Secret Life Of Plants" which did contain the song "Send Her Your Love" which was a top 5 hit in the USA but didn't do anything in the UK. Not much else on it worth noting.

I guess that ABBA (Super Trouper) and Blondie (Autoamerican) were included in Top 100.
