#44. Kylie Minogue - Got To Be Certain (1988 UK #2)
The Aussie soapstar turned popstar's second single was the first of many #2s for her - this one occupying the spot for 3 weeks, behind Wet Wet Wet's cover of 'With A Little Help From My Friends'. It's a simple little pop song, but very endearing.

Too low for "Got To Be Certain". My favourite SAW act is Mandy Smith, who was # 1 with every her single in my chart.
Chartruns : Samantha Fox - Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now (2-2-2-1-1-1-2-4-8-9-12-14-16-19-19-20) (16 weeks) Kylie Minogue - Got To Be Certain (2-2-1-1-1-1-3-4-8-10-10-12-16-17-17-18-20) (17 weeks)

#43. Jason Donovan - Every Day (I Love You More) (1989 #2)
After three number 1's, Jason had to settle for the runner-up spot for this one - as he couldn't dislodge Black Box's club smash hit 'Ride On Time'. I do wonder if Jason got all the songs that Rick Astley would have got if he hadn't come along.

#42. Hazell Dean - Turn It Into Love (1988 UK #21)
Originally an album track on Kylie's debut, and there really isn't much to choose between the 2 versions - but I've used Hazell's as she charted with it, although it really deserved to go top 20 at least. Hazell got a second wind in 1988, after having her first few hits in 1984, and it's a shame this was to be her last top 40 hit as I always felt that with better material she could have had a lot more.

#41. Dead Or Alive - Lover Come Back (To Me) (1985 UK #11)
The follow-up single to 'You Spin Me Round', this continued in a similar vein but narrowly missed out on a top ten place. I can't actually believe the amount of people I've had to correct who have said they only ever had one hit.

#40. Bananarama - Movin' On (1992 #24)
This was the girls' first single as a duo, and one that often gets overlooked but I've always had a soft spot for it. The song was covered by Steps on their 'Steptacular' album, possibly with the aim of creating another anthem like they had when they covered the Bananas' follow-up single to this - 'Last Thing On My Mind', although I have to say they massively improved on that (but not this one!)

#52. Cliff Richard - I Just Don't Have The Heart (1989 #3)
Speaking of Cliff! His 101th single was written and produced by the very people who had kept his 100th off the top spot. It's pretty typical S/A/W fare, but it gave the veteran singer a new lease of life for a moment. It does make you wonder if Elvis would have worked with them had he been alive!
I always thought this should have been Cliff's 100th single.
Cliff himself insisted on The Best Of Me but with all the hoo-ha there would have been over this being his 100th single and an S/A/W track the Jason Donovan single would have been held back a week or two and this would surely have been a #1.

I remember this Jason D song making BBC news as they reckoned it had sold waaaay in excess that it really did and was a sure fire number one, but then it didn’t. Every Day is a good song - but Nothing Can Divide Us, RSVP, and When You Come Back To Me I would place above it.

The whole album was slightly underwhelming. More More More I loved, but Last Thing On My Mind was ok, but Steps elevated by 200 times. Ain’t No Cure was very much a missed opportunity from Pop Life.

56. Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Success (1988 #31)
It seems that when they did try something a bit different then the chart 'Success' wasn't as strong. This new wave band had a big hit in 1986 with 'Love Missile F1-11' and to hear that you would think they'd be the last people to turn to S/A/W for a song. I did actually like their follow-up song 'Dancerama' even more, but 'Success' was a one-off collaboration between them so it doesn't qualify.
A misfire from SAW even more than the England Football Team song. Feasting on scraps when there were no scraps left. Bad SAW.

#47. Princess - After The Love Has Gone (1985 UK #28)
Follow-up to the top ten smash 'Say I'm Your Number One', this disappointingly couldn't quite match its predecessor's success, despite being another slice of R&B Pop heaven.
My favourite Princess song. I missed this completely at the time, but it was on the Crème Of Supreme compilation album, which I stupidly gave away on the vinyl plus poster version, and also bought the Princess album (And A Ton Of Hits) in a charity shop in Brighton for a pound.

#51. Samantha Fox - Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now (1987 UK #8)
Sam Fox is one of those artists that most people would struggle with if she came up as the 3-in-10 artist on Ken Bruce's (not Radio 2's for much longer) Popmaster, but she actually had quite a few hits in the latter half of the 80s. Previously known mainly for her 1986 hit 'Touch Me (I Want Your Body), working with Stock, Aitken and Waterman proved to be a wise move for the former page 3 model. Sadly this is the only song of hers to feature on my top 60 as they didn't do many songs together.
No love for I Only Wanna Be With You? Great great great single. Has always been one of my go to SAW songs.

Oh and When You Come Back To Me I always put on my Christmas song playlists. It’s totally a Christmas song a bit like Charlotte Nilsson Take Me To Your Heaven.

I quite like Sam's cover of 'I only wanna be with you' but I had to be quite ruthless with what I left out, and sadly a lot of covers got the chop. There are still some that made it to come though!

#39. Sinitta - G.T.O. (1987 UK #15)
All of these songs feel like they should be higher, but there's just so many good ones! 'So Macho' doesn't qualify as it wasn't a S/A/W production, but Sinitta Malone had a run of infectiously catchy hit singles in the latter part of the 80s, and into the early 90s, of which this is a fine example!

#38. Rick Astley - Together Forever (1988 UK #2)
The Lancashire lad's fourth single was also his fourth top 3 hit, and second to occupy the runner-up spot on the charts. I doubt the S/A/W team were too bothered this time though as he was only kept off by that girl who played Madge's daughter on Neighbours. It's basically 'Never Gonna Give You Up' part II, but like that song it has an insanely catchy chorus.

#37. Kylie Minogue - Hand On Your Heart (1989 UK #1)
Oh and here's Charlene now! Well she was still Charlene at the time (to English viewers of Neighbours at least), but she was also promoting her second album, just a year after her first, with this outrageously catchy number. It got to number one of course - extending her run to six top 2 hits with her first six releases, and I'm sure if she'd released 'It's No Secret' as originally planned, it would have been seven!

#36. Jason Donovan - Nothing Can Divide Us (1988 #5)
The Neighbours heart-throb's first single reached a modest #5, and is one you don't hear much but I've always had a real soft spot for it. I hated his hair in this video mind, but luckily he got it cut not long after and looked much fitter!

#35. Dead Or Alive - Brand New Lover (1986 UK #31)
This, the lead single from the band's brilliant 'Mad, Bad And Dangerous To Know' album, really underperformed in the UK - although it was a #2 hit in Japan, and even did better in the US than here.
