64 Killing Joke - Brighter Than a Thousand Suns
Their sixth album and follow-up to their big hit album "Night Time". This is not as strong s that album but it does not veer too far away from the sound, maybe a lot more rock than they have been in the past. The record peaked at #54 in the UK which was maybe a disappointment. It is heir only album to chart in the US reaching #194. 3.5/5

63 Wax - Magnetic Heaven
The debut album from a duo made up of Andrew Gold and 10cc guitarist Graham Gouldman. Until very recently I only knew them for their UK hit "Bridge to Your Heart" which I was adored and one of my songs of the year in 1987 then a couple of years ago I heard "Right Between the Eyes" which was really good as well. What I did not expect was I would like this album more than "American English" their next album. This record is really a lost gem but what would you expect with two such great songwriters. It only charted #101 in the US. 4/5 finally

62 Eurythmics - Revenge
Their fifth album and this again might be weird but it is my favourite of their albums. Some of their best singles which don't suffer from over play e.g. "Thorn in My Side", When Tomorrow Comes" and "The Miracle of Love" but it is not just them, I think this has the best album tracks of all their records. The only song I am not a fan of his the single "Missionary Man" otherwise we might have been giving out a 4.5. It went to #3 in the UK and #12 in the US. 4/5

61 The Smithereens - Especially for You
A new band now and the debut album from the New Jersey rock band. I had only heard a couple of their songs, but I was pretty certain they would be totally up my street and I wasn't wrong. How do you describe them, well they are basically power pop made for college radio. This album was just great all the way through. It reached #51 in the US. 4/5

60 Shop Assistants - Shop Assistants
The new music keeps coming and now we have a debut album from an indie band from Edinburgh. This whole scene which was called C86 was something I really wanted into, the girls at my school had all these weird indie bands written all over the school bags and I just wondered where did they hear it!! I kept telling myself it can't just be John Peel, his show was unlistenable on MW, maybe it was better quality on the other side of the district. I did eventually find out, yeh I couldn't just ask girls could I?? Radio Scotland had FM shows after 9pm that played Indie and alt music but I never found it till 1988. So anyway, back to The Shop Assistants I never ever got round to giving them much attention but I think this record is fantastic. It is basically their best of as they only released one album and it's just a great mix of indie pop, dream pop and proto shoegaze. The album only reached #100 but was a huge hit in Indie circles. 4/5

59 Siouxsie & the Banshees - Tinderbox
Their seventh album and my favourite so far, thank you Haven Factor for reminding me of the magnificences of "Cities in Dust" which is easily my favourite Siouxsie song now. Great cover from Garbage out now btw. I was never a big fan of "Candyman" but even that I don't mind now but this whole album is just a masterpiece for me. It maybe should be higher. The record reached #13 in the UK and #88 in the US. 4/5

58 Cactus World News - Urban Beaches
Another new band and another that I never knew at the time, they were a name I saw around but never heard them. This is the Irish rock band's debut album. I am not sure how you would describe them I guess they sit alongside bands like U2 and The Waterboys but they also have a college rock influence as well and they are so 1986. If you asked an AI to create a typical band from this year they would sound like them. This was their only album at the time and it reached #56 in the Uk and #180 in the US. 4/5

57 Prince and The Revolution - Parade: Music From the Motion Picture "Under the Cherry Moon"
Quite spooky I am playing "Sign Of The Times" while posting about this one. I do listen about a year and a half ahead. I can't say I am such a big fan of this album though. This was his eighth album and it was another soundtrack album. I would describe it as solid but not amazing. Side 2 is much stronger than Side 1, although I would say "Girls & Boys" is my favourite track. The record reached #3 in the US and #4 in the UK. 4/5

56 China Crisis - What Price Paradise
Fourth album of theirs, fourth on my list and it also gets four out of a 5. Can they get a full run we still have their 1989 album to come. Yes they have been very consistent and as you can tell that doesn't change here. A couple of great singles, mostly good album tracks and a couple of duffers. But although it still gets a 4, it is the weakest of the four. Its chart placing in the UK is quite a drop as well, only making #63, but their highest charting album in the US at #114. 4/5

55 Orchestral Manœuvres in the Dark - The Pacific Age
Their seventh album and their last of the 80s. Following on with the sound from their single "If You Leave" with a more pop focused sound. The experimental days of the band are well over. I still really like this album if even "(Forever) Live and Die" is the only brilliant track. The record reached #15 in the UK and #47 in the US. 4/5

54 Aviator - Aviator
A huge who? Well I can't tell you very much about this AOR band from New York. This was their only record and it is one of the finest examples of the genre, it completely blew me away. It is not if I have even heard them before I have two AOR playlists and follow another and Aviator are not on any of them! So thank you RYM for introducing me to them. If you are a fan of AOR this is a must listen! 4/5

53 Hüsker Dü - Candy Apple Grey
Their fifth album and they continue to get better although Side 1 is much better than side 2, don't think they will ever become the finished product for me on record that will be left to the next project Sugar. This was their major label debut and features their most radio friendly song yet "Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely". That meant of course they finally charted but just #140 in the US. 4/5

52 The Feelies - The Good Earth
This band were a recommendation from YouTubers I follow and RYM again. I can see why as if you were a fan of US indie in the 00s this would be right up your street, think of bands like Death Cab or The Shins or 60s influenced bands like Teenage Fanclub and you get this album's sound. It is pastoral indie which just makes you feel chill. This was the second album from the band from New Jersey. It is great that you can discover new music from one pf the defining music years of your life 38 years later and that's two just in this batch. 4/5

51 The Church - Heyday
And that's four acts in this batch that I was not listening to in 1986 and only one I even knew in the 90s. The Church have been great up to this point but this record is taking them to the next level. I feel I have done them an injustice here as this is their best album yet and it will not get their best rating. This is still post-punk but with the mid 80s jangle-pop sound turned up to 11 on top. Their sound will change for their next album. This was their fourth album and it reached #146 in the US, their first hit there. 4/5

Ok top 50 time 50 The Mission - Gods Own MedicineThe debut album from the English gothic rock band fronted by Wayne Hussey who has left Sisters Of Mercy. Taking what he has learnt with that band, he brought goth to stadium rock. Ok we aren't quite there yet for the band but the ambition was clear. This was the first goth album I every heard, and it still sounds great, maybe not quite as dark and atmospheric as it felt at the time. That have to admit remains with SoM. Thanks to some amazing singles "Wasteland" and "Severina" especially, the album went to #14 in the UK and '108 in the US. 4/5

49 Cinderella - Night Songs
Another debut album this time from a glam metal band from Philadelphia. They were always one of my favourite bands in the genre and the single from this album was my introduction to them, "Nobody's Fool". They may look over the top but the songs were really good not just party music. they were an instant success reaching #3 in the US 4/5

48 Ric Ocasek - This Side of Paradise
A solo album from the Cars frontman, this record has been very hard to get hold off, think it's only been added to Spotify in the last couple of years. This was his second solo album and I included it due to loving the single "Emotion in Motion" which was a regular play on No Limits. I found the album to be much better than I expected, as even The Cars themselves are a bit mixed quality wise. The record reached #31 in the US 4/5

47 Cocteau Twins - Victorialand
Second appearance for them in 1986, this time a full band album. This was their fourth album and it is another really good one, I still think they will have better to come though, the songs are very subtle on this and it is all about the atmosphere. It went to #10 in the UK. 4/5

46 Robbie Nevil - Robbie Nevil
He still hadn't found success when this album was released but the big hit was already all over the radio. This was his debut album and he was a songwriter of note especially in the US pop/rnb area but with this record he decided to keep some for himself. And one was an instant hit in the US anyway, "C'est la Vie" reached #2 there, it was a slow burn, but it eventually charted in the UK as well and went all the way to #3. That song was another of my early purchases but I then bought the album after hearing "Dominoes" after deciding he was no one hit wonder. Sadly, he didn't have much more success than those songs in the UK. The album went to #37 in the US and #93 in the UK. 4/5

45 'Til Tuesday - Welcome Home
The second album from the US new wave band, it may not have any hits as big as "Voices Carry" but it is almost as great a record as their debut. The US hit this time wa "What About Love" which reached #26 in the US, but the album failed to match the success of their previous album, only peaking at #49 there. 4/5
