Firstly, thanks again for doing them, I really appreciate it. Both are artists I own relatively little of, so it's new territory for me!
Secondly, I'm gonna review them in real time, as I listen to them, so it will be largely first impressions.

Saint Etienne
1. Nothing Can Stop Us
I'd never heard this one before, & my first impression is that it has a breezy, carnival type atmosphere to it. Not a top 40 hit, according to my sources, but it's a very good start (I assume it was one of their first singles)...
Looking good so far!

2. Heart Failed (In The Back Of A Taxi)
Another early one that I'd never heard, & this one sounds very much like Debbie Harry, which can only be a good thing in my eyes ;D
It's very mellow & lovely, if there are more like this then I know I'm gonna enjoy this compilation.

3. Amateur By now I hardly need to say I've never heard this one before. Ooh, it starts with talking. Ooh, it sounds like Debbie Harry again, only doing a Kim Wilde song. Interesting lyrics! Oh, it's over

4. Like A Motorway
This one missed the top 40 after a string of hits, but it's hard to see why. I really like it, especially from the instrumental bit in the middle onwards.

5. The Bad Photographer
Reached #27, so I need this for my collection, but I had never heard it before. First impression is that it's a nice breezy, retro sounding song with bittersweet lyrics, I like it quite a lot already!

6. You're In A Bad Way I'd never heard this before either, Saint Etienne just aren't known in Australia. I've always wanted this one, being one of their biggest hits (#12). It's immensely likeable, this is already my favourite so far. Sorry I can't add much more, but it's almost finished

7. Avenue
This one made #40, & at 7:33 that would make it one of the longer top 40 hits. It weathers the distance well, without losing my interest, as some long songs tend to do. It's very pleasant, I can't quite catch the meaning of the lyrics at the moment, but it probably doesn't need my analysis.

8. Shower Scene
I have news, good news from Notting Hill! LOL that surprised me a bit. This is very upbeat, I like it, especially the understated guitar bit towards the end.

9. Pale Movie I love this one already, the intro is fabulous. The vocals are again very Debbie Harry-esque, sorry to keep making that comparison but I mean it in a good way of course. When this got to #28 I remember wondering what it sounded like, well now I know ;D

10. Sylvie
Another of their biggest hits, #12, & I'd never heard it. A lot of these songs have a pretty much instant impact on me, it would be very hard not to like them, & this is in my top 3 so far, it's FABULOUS. "Leave him alone cos I know he loves me, leave him alone cos he tells me he loves me."

11. Tell Me Why (The Riddle) Ah! One I did have already! Buit even here you've done me a favour, as the one I had was 5:52 long, & this is a more concise 3:50 version It's a great song, one of the best dance choons of 2000. I even have the video, on a CD Diddy Dave made for me.

13. Hug My Soul I really like the intro to this one. And the song of course. This one reached #32, & should have done much better really. Again I'd never heard it before, thanks for enlightening me

15. Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Ah, one I know ;D I've known this ever since it reached #39 in 1991, back in the days I used to get my weekly fix of UK music from Number One magazine. So this cover version holds great memories for me, as well as remaining a great song.

19. He's On The Phone I'd never heard this #11 hit, their biggest apart from Tell Me Why (The Riddle)... I love this one too, but you probably guessed that by now
