The Smiths were & indeed are the greatest rock band of all time. A bold statement maybe but true. The Beatles/Stones/Kinks were all fine bands but their songs- even at their finest never had the depth or passion of the Smiths. Compare a classic Beatles song like "Yesterday" with a classic Smiths song like "There is a Light That Never Goes Out". The former may be melodic and convey a common emotional situation but its imagery is basic and situation simple - a bloke's girlfriend has dumped him - end of. However the Smiths' song contains rich imagery - darkened underpasses, being run down by a bus etc and deals with a more 'on the edge' situation. Johnny Marr was also the most original guitarist ever - no simple Mark Knopfler/George Harrisonisms - but multi-layered playing complex & rich.

Bold statement as you say, I love the Beatles and the Smiths equally, for diff reasons and situations. Fave Smiths tracks for a non-album fan like myself. What difference does it make? How soon is now? Bigmouth strikes again! Panic Sheila take a bow There is a light that never goes out...

Love The Smiths... esp "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Ask", "Rubber Ring" & "Panic" (great for bouncing around to!)
Only have the Best Of I & II though... would like to get into their albums more, any recommendations for which one to start with?

Compare a classic Beatles song like "Yesterday" with a classic Smiths song like "There is a Light That Never Goes Out". I don`t know much about the Smiths. Yet I know someone who is an equal Beatles and Smiths admirer. Here`s what he has to say about your thesis: The Smiths suffer from the same ailment that keeps a few of my all-time favorite artists from Beatles-quality...
Onetrickponyitis. Basically, a schtick. They were brilliant and peerless at what they did, but... that's all they did. There's a common thread throughout all their work, and they sort of built on previous work and made it better, smarter, more accomplished. Nearly every band in history has done this, or at least TRIED to, so this isn't a dis or a putdown! The Smiths are absolutely one of the most important (and best) bands in history.
But you've gotta do more than that to match a band as reckless as The Beatles. You've got to pull off the impossible and somehow manage to have enough intangibles to be respected creatively and still dominate charts. I think that CAN still be done, but there isn't anybody out there with the combination of bravery and talent required to do it. Morrissey damn sure isn't it. Everybody plays too safe. Experimental, inaccessible artists just experiment, pop artists just snap crackle and pop... Beatles= the perfect balance. The Smiths, God love them, can't hope to compete. The jump from This Charming Man to Girlfriend in a Coma is... well, what jump? I love Morrissey to death, but there things about his personality and his talents that hold him back. This guy makes sense.

Controversial, some would say that the beatles were not that experimental...but that is for another thread...

...some would say that the beatles were not that experimental... They were. Consider the circumstances of their time. A song like "Tomorrow Never Knows", recorded April 1966 - sounding like something directly out of the future - still holds up today as bizarre, futuristic landscape of a song - only 24 months prior to that, they were still singing "She Loves You". The trick is to be experimental and to be popular at the same time. And of course it`s not just sufficient to just be "experimental", you gotta be great at what you do.
