The last chart this week!
Down at #94 is a future #1... a new entry for "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel... its climb to #1 was:
94-54-25-7-1
Only a handful of #1s entered the top 100 lower than that...

In fact I can think of only two #1s that entered the top 100 lower than that. A bag of Smarties to whoever can get the two songs Clue: both songs were by female singers, and they are connected by the same song that the first singer took to #1. The first singer entered at #99 with this song, the second singer entered at #98 with the song she took to #1. Both songs sold a million copies in the UK...

Oh I think I know the answer to this one! ;D I believe the second #1 was Think Twice by Celine Dion, so perhaps the first was The Power of Love by Jennifer Rush. I could be wrong though! I remember Eternal Flame by the Bangles charted outside the top 75 as well.

There's some real quality in that chart *sighs as he reflects on the greatness of the past singles chart* New Order, Depeche Mode, Level 42, Soft Cell, Heaven 17!

I remember Eternal Flame by the Bangles charted outside the top 75 as well. You win the bag of Smarties! Eternal Flame entered at #81 and had quite a slow climb to the top: 81-79-72-60-53-52-47-33-13-5-1 All three records were released by the same record company, 2 on CBS and one on Epic. The record company used to have a policy of pushing a single until it had reached maximum sales... with those three it worked well, over 2.5m sales between all three...

Shame we cant go back to those days, rather than hype, hype and more hype in at #3 disappear into obscurity! Go New Order! And also the excellent Chance by Big Country, loved it!

I used to have that record by Big Country, "Chance". It was a great song. I also bought the follow up, "Wonderland" which was nearly as good...

Yup, those were the days wern't they?, all it is is enter high then drop, drop, drop. I think there should be a policy on new releases- every TWO weeks release new singles to allow those already in the chart have a decent run. Hopefully this will change, but the chances are thin and you can't beat big business. As for the songs, I like quite a lot of those, the #1 is quite irritating tho .
