Although the chart is dated 15 December 1984, this chart was announced on Tuesday 11 December 1984 (Tuesday being the date the new chart was announced back in those days, the chart was still based on sales to Saturday evening, it just wasn't compiled until the Monday due to slower methods back then)

Apart from the very first chart of all, this was the only time in chart history (until then) that the top 2 had been new entries. Both were charity records (both for Band Aid, of course!) and sold 750,000 and 500,000 copies this week to reach #s 1 & 2. A good selection of Christmas songs old and new in the chart too, I think there were more Christmas or party-type records in the Christmas charts of 1984 than any other chart before or since... Saddest thing is, I can remember this chart being announced, and I was one of the people who refused to buy Band Aid back then, and I didn't particularly like the record either . By the following year I liked it enough to buy the song when it was re-issued. I bought Wham's song when it was re-issued on New Years Eve 1984/5 with Everything She Wants re-mixed and made the official A side. That version was also no longer a charity record, only the profits from the December 3 1984 release of Last Christmas were given to Band Aid... yes, I seem to have had a disliking about the whole Band Aid thing back in 1984

According to one of the old editions of GBBHS, Jim Diamond did not want his record (I Should Have Known Better) to be #1 for more than one week, as he wanted Band Aid (which wasn't actually released in time) to knock it off #1. Seems an usual wish!

Is there any/much difference between the Paul McCartney song and the version released earlier this year?
