Hmmm.... a strange chart. Slap bang in the middle of the disco and new wave explosion we have the most conservative top 3 you'll find in almost any late 70s chart.
It goes without saying that the #1 was utter tripe and it was about to be replaced by even more sickly (if not QUITE as bad) tripe in the form of Dr Hook. In fact, this is probably one of the worst charts of 1979!

The best song on the chart is at #55, "The Shape Of Things To Come" by the Headboys. It never reached the top 40, but as was the way back in those days, the song was never deleted after a week on sale so it hung around the lower reaches of the chart, racking up small but consistent sales which kept it in the top 75 for 2 months despite a lowly #45 peak.
Other noteworthy songs (to me at least!):
#29 ETON RIFLES The Jam
despite charting since 1977, The Jam had never looked like crossing over to the mainstream and had yet to have a top 10 single despite reaching the top 40 with all 8 of their previous releases. Eton Rifles jumped to #7 the following week and kickstarted a period of massive success for the Jam, which included 9 consecutive top 10 hits (imports and re-issues excluded), 3 #1s and the then-newsworthy feat of entering the charts at #1 with the follow up to this song (Going Underground, March 1980), the first time that feat had occurred since 1973
#14 THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA Charlie Daniels Band
Utterly brilliant! Once heard, never forgotten. Even covered by The Levellers in the 90s...

Levellers did a fine job imo as well!
God I loved that abba tune, I was just getting into music at this point...
