I'd assume The Reynolds Girls but I thought they couldn't be traced

I’m sure I’ve seen this picture of the “Reynolds Girls” before - they weren’t the only two of the Reynolds that disappeared off the face of the earth. Their sister Debbie did too after a minor role in Brookside.

I just watched this and thought it was brilliant. Music snobs hate them, but there is no denying that they made a lot of fantastic pop records which still stand up today!

For me, they made some ok to really quite good pop music up to and including Never Gonna Give You Up. After that though it immediately went badly wrong, it was like they had been casting around looking for a formula that they could repeat over and over and with Rick Astley’s debut they found it. After that they dominated the charts with loads of records that all had the exact same structure, punctuated occasionally by not for note copy cover versions. It was all just too much. In the end, 80% of their output I could gladly never hear again. There’s still some good stuff though (I love Respectable!)

I do agree that a lot of it was pap, but most of the big hits I love. they did do some good stuff after '87 though - although I am a bit of a Kylie and Jason fan, it has to be said! Donna Summer's album came out in '89 though and that is great. I also think Lonnie Gordon's 'Happenin' all over again' from '90 is one of the best things they ever did!
I never really got into Sonia or Big Fun though.

I'm far from the biggest fan of SAW, but their early work stand up very well, it was only when they became a victim of their own success that they released too much substandard material off their assembly line which got into the charts (quite literally putting the S in Hit). But even during the 1990s they had their moments even after Matt Aitken bailed out late in 1991. For example had this been released in 1989 instead of 1993 it would have been a surefire top 3 hit:
Boy Krazy - That's What Love can Do (1993 UK #80, USA#18, Can #7)
I really enjoyed the first (Rise Of) part of the documentary, most of which I knew, but it was refreshingly candid to see Matt & Mike contradict Pete in places. Still it helps that Pete Waterman is always such an engaging interviewee. The Mel & Kim bits were particularly moving. It will be very interesting to see how the second (Fall of) part of the documentary goes. How they will cover that Reynolds Girls single (which was their Waterloo, to their Roadblock single Battle of Austerlitz triumph); and their backlash, and eventually split.

What a brilliant definitive 3 hours documentary that was. If it was on a more credible subject it would win a Bafta.
They did not mess around with the fall of part of the story in the last half an hour. It was strangely emotional to see them together in their old watering hole at the end...

Remember this song from 1992 Her niece commented in the comments section "R.I.P. Aunty" that she passed away three years ago. R.I.P. Nancy Davis
