Listenign to it right now, it's ok, but not as good as 'Somebody Told Me'.

i think i prefer "somebody told me" as well, but that was utterly ACE, so anything else has a lot to live up to! i love the way this song is quite different, too... album's out soon

right, i've FINALLY got it... i'm about halfway through listening to it for the first time now it's sounding VERY good so far ;D couple of standouts so far (excluding the singles). in fact, both "mr. brightside" and "somebody told me" sound a little different on the album... the former in particular sounds a bit rougher and more interesting. 6 tracks in and off to a flying start...

and thus follows my track-by-track review... 1. "jenny was a friend of mine" excellent start to the album... thrashing drumwork. lovely chorus. a possibility for the next single! 2. "mr. brightside" the second single, sounds rather different! a little rougher and deeper, particularly noticeable in the baseline. i like lots!

3. "smile like you mean it" another good one... the verses are a little nondescript, but the chorus and middle-8 make up for this. good lyrics. reminiscent of the stills and the strokes
4. "somebody told me" well we all know about this one ;D not much different from the way it was released, but it sounds SO much better blasting out of a stereo. stupendous as ever!

5. "all these things that i've done" rather different; somewhat slower to the songs that have preceded it. yet again, a strokesy feel (but, as ever, with far superior vocals ), moving towards something altogether more bluesy as flowers sings "i got SOUL but i'm not a SOLDIER". rather nice. 6. "andy, you're a star" hmm... this is alright. its slowness makes it seem a bit too sluggish. doesn't really do much for me.

7. "on top" comes as a welcome relief after the last song. the verses are rather 80s-flavoured, but the chorus is pretty good. after the false end things get louder and more interesting. very good. 8. "glamourous indie rock and roll" oh dear. i didn't have high hopes for this one as soon as i saw the title it's not actually that bad, but the general idea wears thin VERY quickly... if i had a penny for every repetition of "it's indie rock and roll for MEEEE"... well, you get the idea.

right, lumping the last 3 into one post... 9. "believe me natalie" this is about as strokesy as this album gets. very thrashy, and not really tuneful enough for me. it could well grow on me, though. 10. "midnight show" this is a little better... fast-paced, frenetic drumming, and altogether more interesting. probably the best of the last 4. ends in a few rather nice violin chords. 11. "everything will be alright" a very simple, slow, and somewhat dull song. hints of soul, which is probably why i don't like it much significantly truncated it might have been better, but at 5:45, it's the longest track on the album, and far outstays its welcome.

Some of em may grow on you as very few albums hit me first time. 2 exceptions Franz Ferdinand and Odyssey #5 by Powderfinger.

well, i've played it 3 times now... some of them are sounding better already. but there is definitely some very great stuff here; very good for a début!
albums that hit me first time... probably only elbow's "cast of thousands" and hifh's "the neon handshake". even "asleep in the back" took me 2 listens to appreciate it properly, but then again i wasn't really paying attention the first time i played it...
