We all know that FIFA's rankings are a bit crap and the Elo ratings, whilst a bit better also seem flawed at times so I've decided to try and devise my own system.
It's a bit of a work in progress so it won't be ready for a little while yet, partly due to all the internationals taking place over the summer but I've got all the top teams on the list.
Anyone want to guess who's #1?

No. Lagging behind a bit after their defeat to Holland...

How many years are counted in this?

How many years are counted in this? It's going to be based on the last 2 years instead of 4 or 8 like FIFA have used, or all-time like Elo. This will give a more accurate representation of current form. However, to make it easier to compile to start with, I'm only using results since the start of 2007, so the first "official" version won't be ready until the end of the year.

No... Some patchy form in the Euro qualifiers. They only finished a point ahead of Bulgaria in the end, though they did have the luxury of having already qualified when they lost their final game to Belarus. They did leapfrog Italy with their win the other night.

Getting closer to the top... Would've had a chance if they'd won the Copa America last year. A few crap results in friendlies as well... I don't understand how they're #1 in the FIFA rankings...

No... They would've been knocking on the door if they'd beaten Croatia. Things are changing constantly with the Euro 2008 matches but the #1 hasn't changed since the tournament began. I think there's a good chance whoever wins the tournament will end up as #1.

Ooh no... Losing to Scotland isn't going to get anyone to the top... In fact, they're surprisingly low...

No... Too many Nike-obliging friendlies, plus an inconsistent start to their World Cup campaign (2 wins, 2 draws).

Spain Yes! Since the start of 2007, they've played 17, won 15 and drawn 2 and have won their last 7, including the win over Russia. They lost 3 of their last 4 games of 2006 so if I'd started counting the results from the end of the last World Cup, they wouldn't be #1 but for now, they are at the top of my rankings...
