and being SLIGHTLY pedantic - the #2 was just "Rivers Of Babylon" at the time - there was no double A side with "Brown Girl In The Ring" for a couple of months. Then the song climbed back up to #2!

I remember going to Butlins and seeing John and Olivia at #1... if you've ever been there they used to have a communal TV room and in those days it was packed with us young 'uns watching TOTP... as it was the beginning of August 1978 when I went there the song must have been close to its end at the top. I think it did 9 weeks at #1?

Yeah I love it. A friend of mine who runs the national pop quiz asked me to get it for him for a theme round and that was my first introduction to it too. Brilliant with a superb guitar solo in too!

Looking at that chart it was difficult to predict what would happen next. Saturday Night Fever had been big but Night Fever by the Bee Gees could only manage 2 weeks at #1 so we couldn't necessarily predict a long run for JT & ONJ and they'd taken a while to get to the top, and the Rolling Stones made such a massive climb.
They wouldn't get any higher though - ever again in their career. They took a tumble the following week to #4 - there were rumours that sales had actually exceeded prediction so much that stores had run out of copies, and after falling to #4 it spent another week at #4 before falling out of the top 5. They did have the consolation of taking Miss You to #1 in the USA, and the album Some Girls got to #2 in the UK and was also a US #1. They would subsequently have a #1 album in 1980 with Emotional Rescue, with the title track going top 10.
Smokie made a promising climb but fell back badly the following week. Manfred Mann's Earth Band stuck at #6. It was that dreaded Smurf Song that instead flew up to #2 and stayed there for 6 weeks. James Galway would get to #3 and Marshall Hain, up from 40 to 23 this week, would also eventually make its way to #3. The Motors would get to #4 with Airport, Kate Bush, ELO and the Boomtown Rats would all get to #6 and Clout, in at #64, would eventually make it all the way up to #2, with A Taste Of Honey (in at #65) just behind them at #3.
In the NM chart, JT & ONJ also reached #1 but stayed on top 2 weeks, to be replaced by Kate Bush and subsequently Clout.

Interesting info Earl. So you're the person who compiled his NM charts. I found a few of your early ones from 1995 and found them particularly interesting, specifically when you mention the Oasis- Whatever single, as I never realised that Half A World Away was a B-Side. I remember hearing that when the Chris Moyles Show were live in Belgium for Euro 2000 and just assuming that it was on their current album.

but there was sh*t too: smokie - i always hated the voice of chris norman you're the one that i want - never loved that too CA PLANE POUR MOI Plastic Bertrand - biggest french sh*t ever created THE SMURF SONG Father Abraham And The Smurfs ----lol----
