Current odds (best odds available):
6/4 Lewis Hamilton 2/1 Rebecca Adlington 4/1 Chris Hoy 33/1 Andy Murray 100/1 Ben Ainslie 100/1 Joe Calzaghe 100/1 Nicole Cooke 100/1 Ian Poulter 100/1 Kevin Pietersen 100/1 James Degale 100/1 David Haye 100/1 Wayne Rooney 125/1 Rebecca Romero 125/1 Ricky Hatton
There's a lot of variation between different bookmakers. Rebecca Romero and Ben Ainslie are as short as 33/1 with one bookie. Andy Murray is 12/1 with Ladbrokes, Nicole Cooke is 25/1 with Paddy Power. Victoria Pendleton is as short as 33/1 with BlueSq but as long as 200/1 with Victor Chandler. Bradley Wiggins is 40/1 with BlueSq but 250/1 with Canbet. Some are also offering 66/1 on England rugby league player Jamie Peacock with the World Cup starting this weekend.

What about the other awards? Team of the year - British Olympic team? Overseas - maybe Usain Bolt.

What about the other awards? Team of the year - British Olympic team? Overseas - maybe Usain Bolt. The overseas award should go to Bolt or Michael Phelps but I've got a horrible feeling it will be Rafael Nadal. Team of the year could be given to the British Olympic and Paralympic squads as a whole or maybe they'll focus on the cyclists... England's rugby league team will be in the running if they win the World Cup but that's unlikely. Man U will probably get a mention as well.

Current odds (best odds available): 6/4 Lewis Hamilton 2/1 Rebecca Adlington 4/1 Chris Hoy 33/1 Andy Murray Think the bookies have got it right, would say its between Adlington, Hoy and Hamilton (if he wins the world title). As big a fan of Murray as i am he will probably miss out when in previous years he would have been a dead cert for the top 3. His time would come if he won a Grand Slam title.

I think we all agree that Hamilton is now almost certain to win this don't we?
I'd forgotten this and in fact can't remember now, but Rusedski won in 1997 after he reached the USO final despite achieving less than Murray has this year, which shows just what a strong year this year is. Although there isn't much to choose between them I would actually prefer Adlington to finish 2nd ahead of Hoy. Hoy may have won more golds this year but Adlingtons achievements are greater imo because they came so out of the blue. Plus in the interviews i've read and heard she comes across as a really nice, grounded young woman and i think that may well count in her favour because i get the feeling she's quite popular with the public.

Hamilton will be hot favourite now. I really have no problem which of him, Hoy and Adlington wins, as long as they are in the top 3. Even if Joe Calzaghe beats Roy Jones tomorrow night, he'll struggle to challenge the top 3.
I think Rusedski's win in 1997 came in a very poor year for British sport. No gold medals at the world athletics, Damon Hill struggling at Arrows in the F1, England losing the Ashes once again and no major football tournament...

The only serious challengers are Chris Hoy and Lewis Hamilton. Lewis will probably win it as F1 is quite high profile and is on terrestrial TV once a fortnight.
As an athlete Chris Hoy deserves it hands down. Becky Adlington, her achievements are fantastic, has the personality of a cardboard box and is unlikely to get the majority of the public vote.

They should go to Hamilton, Bolt and Robson. Who is Ellie Simmonds?

The shortlist was determined by a poll of 28 sports editors from national and regional newspapers and magazines from across the country. Each editor submitted their own shortlist of 10, with each each person on the list receiving 1 vote. The 10 with the most votes went forward to the final shortlist.
The newspapers and magazines involved were: Belfast Telegraph Daily Mail Daily Post (Wales) Daily Star Daily Star Sunday Daily Telegraph Evening Standard Financial Times The Guardian The Herald Independent On Sunday Liverpool Echo Mail On Sunday The Metro News Of The World The Observer The People Scotland On Sunday The Scotsman Sport Magazine The Sun Sunday Express Sunday Mirror Sunday Telegraph Sunday Times The Times The Voice Zoo Magazine
35 sportspeople received votes in the poll. These were the results. Some of the votes are somewhat baffling. It makes you wonder what some of these editors actually know about sport...

And who says these sports editors are experts?
I don't agree with having the list produced. If they want a public vote just have it.
Mu original choice was Chris Hoy but I was going to vote for Ellie Simmonds, however she's not on the list.
I'm now torn between Hoy and Christine Ohuruogu.

If you're going to have a phone vote you need choices. Ohuruogu wouldn't even be in my top 5.

Rebecca Adlington now catching up with Lewis Hamilton according to the Bookies. I'm just so surprised that Chris Hoy isn't easy favourite - is it due to him not being bubbly enough or that cycling isn't loved. But 3 gold medals plus his Olympic History makes him a real legend. The other two will reach their pinnacle another time. It's one occasion I wouldn't mind if all the Scots did a non stop phone vote a la Leon Jackson.

5 for Ronaldo?! Surprised Giggs didn't get more... Im surprised Giggs got any! Whats he done this year apart from score the clinching goal in Man U's title win? Pietersen is another surprise, DC too, and there's quite a few i've never heard of! At least one things right. Pendleton is just outside the Top 10. My dad and i were both surprised that she didn't make the final 10, but there's no one really that stands out that should have missed out.

I think it was the fact Giggs became the first player to win 10 English league titles. I do feel sorry for Victoria Pendleton missing out again. She should've been on last year's shortlist but missed out because no-one took any notice of the track cyclists until Beijing (despite them dominating the World Championships last year), whilst people like Andy Murray (who achieved nothing in 2007) were included.
