Brand new update. Again, not much movement near the top as the European teams ended the year with friendlies before their winter break. England drop a place to 13, despite beating Germany. This is due to them being leapfrogged by the USA, who were playing a World Cup qualifier on the same night. Gibraltar are new on this month's list. They were part of a 3-team tournament which also featured Jersey and an U20 team from Madeira. The match between Jersey and Gibraltar, which Jersey won 2-1, has been counted for these rankings. The Caribbean Cup takes place this month. It acts as a qualifying competition for the CONCACAF Gold Cup so expect to see some movement from the likes of Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and Guadeloupe in next month's rankings. (Last month's rankings in brackets): 1(1) Spain 2(2) Germany 3(3) Croatia 4(4) Netherlands 5(5) Italy 6(6) Brazil 7(7) Russia 8(8) Greece 9(9) Romania 10(11) Argentina 11(14) United States 12(10) Turkey 13(12) England 14(16) Czech Republic 15(13) Portugal 16(15) Poland 17(21) Saudi Arabia 18(17) Israel 19(19) France 20(18) Egypt 21(25) Japan 22(23) Mexico 23(20) Bulgaria 24(24) Paraguay 25(22) Cameroon 26(26) Uruguay 27(27) Ivory Coast 28(28) Lithuania 29(31) Iran 30(34) Ukraine 31(33) Honduras 32(30) Nigeria 33(38) Wales 34(36) Serbia 35(29) Ireland 36(32) Sweden 37(52) Trinidad & Tobago 38(39) Ghana 39(35) Chile 40(37) Denmark 41(41) Morocco 42(44) Costa Rica 43(40) Scotland 44(45) Hungary 45(47) South Korea 46(42) Tunisia 47(43) Venezuela 48(50) Colombia 49(46) Norway 50(48) Northern Ireland 51(49) Guinea 52(62) Australia 53(51) Mali 54(57) Switzerland 55(58) Slovakia 56(53) El Salvador 57(55) North Korea 58(54) Guadeloupe 59(56) Uzbekistan 60(64) Oman 61(61) Belgium 62(60) Syria 63(63) Albania 64(59) Finland 65(85) Antigua & Barbuda 66(67) Iraq 67(70) India 68(72) Bosnia-Herzegovina 69(65) Bahrain 70(71) Latvia 71(69) Senegal 72(66) Slovenia 73(73) Sudan 74(75) Angola 75(68) Rwanda 76(78) Haiti 77(83) South Africa 78(76) Libya 79(74) Guatemala 80(92) Cyprus 81(77) Gabon 82(81) Qatar 83(79) Thailand 84(80) Ecuador 85(82) Zambia 86(86) Moldova 87(84) Macedonia 88(88) Uganda 89(90) China 90(87) Canada 91(115) Jamaica 92(88) Mozambique 93(94) Tajikistan 94(95) Barbados 95(93) Bolivia 96(98) Suriname 97(99) United Arab Emirates 98(110) Iceland 99(97) Kenya 100(91) Belarus 101(96) Cuba 102(103) Martinique 103(102) Peru 104(100) Armenia 105(106) Grenada 106(104) Algeria 107(108) Congo 107(108) Democratic Rep. of Congo 109(125) Fiji 110(112) Solomon Islands 111(113) Singapore 112(117) Tanzania 113(107) Burkina Faso 114(101) New Zealand 115(105) Benin 116(111) New Caledonia 117(114) Georgia 118(116) Panama 119(120) Malawi 120(118) Kazakhstan 121(132) Estonia 122(119) Gambia 123(121) Jordan 124(126) Turks & Caicos Islands 125(122) Madagascar 126(130) Montenegro 127(131) Togo 128(142) Burma 129(123) Turkmenistan 130(124) Namibia 131(127) Cape Verde 132(137) Hong Kong 133(128) Bermuda 134(129) Zimbabwe 135(134) Puerto Rico 136(136) Azerbaijan 137(133) Indonesia 138(138) Kosovo 139(135) Botswana 140(139) Austria 141(140) Vanuatu 142(141) Netherlands Antilles 143(144) Philippines 144(143) Chad 145(145) Burundi 146(149) Luxembourg 147(146) Nepal 148(148) Sri Lanka 149(147) Equatorial Guinea 150(152) Ethiopia 151(150) Malaysia 152(153) Samoa 153(151) Liechtenstein 154(163) Guyana 155(155) Swaziland 156(158) Vietnam 157(154) Maldives 158(156) Sierra Leone 159(157) Eritrea 160(160) Kyrgyzstan 161(162) Pakistan 162(159) Lesotho 163(161) Lebanon 164(165) Niger 165(166) Taiwan 166(167) Reunion 167(164) St. Kitts & Nevis 168(168) Yemen 169(170) Kuwait 170(169) Cayman Islands 171(171) Liberia 172(172) Zanzibar 173(173) British Virgin Islands 174(174) Malta 175(175) Cambodia 176(176) St. Vincent & the Grenadines 177(177) Afghanistan 178(178) St. Lucia 179(179) Laos 180(180) Seychelles 181(181) Guinea-Bissau 182(182) Mauritania 183(183) Belize 184(184) Mauritius 185(185) Cook Islands 185(185) Tonga 187(187) Nicaragua 188(188) Bhutan 189(190) Bangladesh 190(189) Tahiti 191(191) Bahamas 192(192) Brunei 193(193) Djibouti 194(194) Mayotte 195(195) Mongolia 196(196) Dominica 197(198) US Virgin Islands 198(197) Guam 199(199) Aruba 200(205) Jersey 201(200) Faroe Islands 202(201) Tuvalu 203(202) Tibet 204(203) Andorra 205(204) French Guiana 206(207) Comoros 207(208) East Timor 207(208) Palestine 209(205) Guernsey 210(210) Macao 211(211) American Samoa 211(211) Anguilla 211(211) Saint-Martin 211(211) Somalia 215(---) Gibraltar 215(215) Montserrat 215(215) Northern Cyprus 215(215) Papua New Guinea 219(218) Central African Republic 219(218) Northern Mariana Islands 221(220) San Marino 222(221) Dominican Republic 223(222) Sao Tome & Principe 223(222) Sint Maarten Biggest jump: Jamaica (up 24 to 91) Biggest fall: New Zealand (down 13 to 114)

Having taken my eye off the ball where international football is concerned, why on earth are United States so high ?? The simple answer is they don't lose many games, particularly competitive ones. Whilst CONCACAF isn't the strongest region (and the rankings take this into account), the USA have a great record against other CONCACAF teams. They won the Gold Cup (their equivalent of the European Championship) last year and have strolled into the final round of World Cup qualifying. Their positions in other world rankings are: FIFA - 24 Elo - 18 Roon Ba - 16
