Would anyone have any objections to his thread becoming a general (non-F1) motorsport thread? Absolutely not! I don't think we'd have enough interest over the year for GP2 only

Cool. It means I can post Indycar stuff in here instead of the F1 thread and anyone else can add any other stuff they want.

I hate how this has gone to Setanta . This may be the only way I keep up to date with the series. Quite a few have been complaining about this on the BBC forums, especially as BBC have the rights as part of the F1 package. There are some live streams on the internet (but they'll be in Finnish probably). I'll post/PM for Monaco Good races this weekend in GP2. di Grassi was desperately slow towards the end of the feature race and was holding up a huge queue of drivers. There was a nasty accident when Parente tried to pass him: Second race not as interesting, but Grosjean took 18 points out of a possible 20 this weekend. Championship rivals di Grassi and Hulkenburg didn't score. If Grosjean stays in the series he could dominate

Helio Castroneves has taken pole position for the Indianapolis 500 ahead of Ryan Briscoe and Dario Franchitti.
The first qualifying sessions took place at the weekend with the first 11 positions decided on Saturday, the next 11 on Sunday. The remaining 11 spots on the grid will be filled next weekend with the race taking place on May 24th.
Grid (positions 1-22):
ROW 1 1. Helio Castroveves (Brz) 224.864 mph 2. Ryan Briscoe (Aus) 224.083 3. Dario Franchitti (GB) 224.010
ROW 2 4. Graham Rahal (USA) 5. Scott Dixon (NZ) 6. Tony Kanaan (Brz)
ROW 3 7. Mario Moraes (Brz) 8. Marco Andretti (USA) 9. Will Power (Aus)
ROW 4 10. Danica Patrick (USA) 11. Alex Lloyd (GB) 12. Raphael Matos (Brz)
ROW 5 13. Paul Tracy (Can) 14. Vitor Meira (Brz) 15. Justin Wilson (GB)
ROW 6 16. Hideki Mutoh (Jap) 17. Ed Carpenter (USA) 18. Dan Wheldon (GB)
ROW 7 19. AJ Foyt IV (USA) 20. Scott Sharp (USA) 21. Sarah Fisher (USA)
ROW 8 22. Davey Hamilton (USA) ("on the bubble")
After the 3rd day of qualifying, the slowest car overall (currently Davey Hamilton) is "on the bubble" and can be bumped off the grid by another car going faster on the final day of qualifying, often known as "bump day". If a car goes faster than the one currently on the bubble, it takes 33rd spot on the grid (and all other cars move up 1 place if the car on the bubble came from one of the first 2 sessions).
Britain's Mike Conway, who drove in GP2 last year, was taken to hospital to be treated for bruised lungs after a heavy crash yesterday.

If Conway is not fit to race Darren Manning is tabbed to replace him. And the new qualifying method is stupid.

Manning deserves a regular drive. He's better than most of the American drivers...

I might start posting some NASCAR comments here, if it elicits a response. NASCAR has more to it than appears at first sight.
I'll expand on this theme when I have more time.

NASCAR is actually one of the best motorsports in the world. It's a shame it is not on terrestrial TV in the UK. It has one of the most exciting elements of passing, crashing and due to time it takes place it has track condition changes every hour.

The final qualifying sessions for the Indy 500 take place this weekend. Those set to try and get a place on the grid include Mike Conway, who seems to have recovered from last weekend's crash, Oriol Servia, Robert Doornbos, Townsend Bell, Milka Duno, Tomas Scheckter, Bruno Junqueira, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Nelson Philippe, Buddy Lazier, EJ Viso, Stanton Barrett, Alex Tagliani and John Andretti.

Yesterday's Indy 500 qualifiers:
ROW 8 23. Robert Doornbos (Ned) 24. Townsend Bell (USA)
ROW 9 25. Oriol Servia (Esp) 26. Alex Tagliani (Can) 27. Tomas Scheckter (SA)
ROW 10 28. Mike Conway (GB) 29. EJ Viso (Ven) 30. Ryan Hunter-Reay (USA)
ROW 11 31. John Andretti (USA) 32. Milka Duno (Ven) 33. Nelson Philippe (Fra) (on the bubble)
Buddy Lazier, Bruno Junqueira and Stanton Barrett will today try to take the final spot on the grid by beating Philippe's time. If they go faster than any of the other drivers, Milka Duno will then be on the bubble, though Bump Day qualifiers automatically start at the back of the grid, regardless of how quick their time is.

James Thompson has taken 2 race victories so far at Donnington in the BTCC, 1 race left at 5.10pm. Reverse grid.
Also, good win for Jorge Lorenzo at Le Mans in the Moto GP.
EDIT: Collard won race 3 in the BTCC.

Bump Day has just finished at Indianapolis with a flurry of late activity.
John Andretti made it into the race with minutes to spare, bumping Ryan Hunter-Reay. Hunter-Reay went out for the final qualifying attempt and bumped Alex Tagliani, who was 26th on the grid. Seconds later, qualifying was over and Tagliani had no chance to respond.
The bottom 7 after yesterday's session all had to set new times to avoid being bumped. Former winner Buddy Lazier and rookie Stanton Barrett failed in their attempts to make it into the race.
Revised grid:
ROW 1 1. Helio Castroveves (Brz) 2. Ryan Briscoe (Aus) 3. Dario Franchitti (GB)
ROW 2 4. Graham Rahal (USA) 5. Scott Dixon (NZ) 6. Tony Kanaan (Brz)
ROW 3 7. Mario Moraes (Brz) 8. Marco Andretti (USA) 9. Will Power (Aus)
ROW 4 10. Danica Patrick (USA) 11. Alex Lloyd (GB) 12. Raphael Matos (Brz)
ROW 5 13. Paul Tracy (Can) 14. Vitor Meira (Brz) 15. Justin Wilson (GB)
ROW 6 16. Hideki Mutoh (Jap) 17. Ed Carpenter (USA) 18. Dan Wheldon (GB)
ROW 7 19. AJ Foyt IV (USA) 20. Scott Sharp (USA) 21. Sarah Fisher (USA)
ROW 8 22. Davey Hamilton (USA) 23. Robert Doornbos (Ned) 24. Townsend Bell (USA)
ROW 9 25. Oriol Servia (Esp) 26. Tomas Scheckter (SA) 27. Mike Conway (GB)
ROW 10 28. John Andretti (USA) 29. EJ Viso (Ven) 30. Bruno Junqueira (Brz)
ROW 11 31. Milka Duno (Ven) 32. Nelson Philippe (Fra) 33. Ryan Hunter-Reay (USA)

Under the old bumping rules Andretti would have had little chance. As it is his team seemed to understand them, Conquest Racing (Tagliani's) did not. Conway was impressive in confirming his place.

I went to Indy qualifying a couple of years ago. Both days were completely rained off. Nonetheless, I had a great time. The facilities and track are truly awesome, even empty and wet. I walked the oval, and figured out the GP circuit on the infield. I climbed to the top of the highest stands. I wandered around the paddock, poking at all the gear that the teams weren't using. I got to sit in one of the pace cars. I touched the trophy. I spent several hours in the museum. I watched the pick-up trucks trying to dry the surface for a few hours, before the rain tipped down again. I bought my souvenirs. And I went to a free Cheap Trick concert in the parking lot. For just $10 it was a great day, even if I didn't see any action. I can't imagine how extraordinary the actual race day would be. Whilst us Europeans can get quite snobby about the quality of Formula One versus Indy Cars, there's no denying that the spectator experience in the US is far better. Anyone know what channel is showing the Indy 500 ?

Anyone know what channel is showing the Indy 500 ? It's on Sky Sports 3, according to the Sky Sports web site. I had the rare pleasure of seeing it live last year as the hotel we were staying in in London happened to have Sky Sports. In America, they really know how to treat the fans, not just for motorsport but for pretty much every sport. I've caught the drag racing on Five a few times and it's great how close the fans can get to the cars in the garages. They really make them feel part of the event. Whilst F1 is my first love and always will be, I do enjoy Indycars. I started getting into it when Mansell was over there and my interest grew when I got the old Indycar Racing PC game and got to know all the tracks. After the split I followed Champcars but my interest dropped dramatically after Greg Moore's death. After a few years, I started getting interested again but found myself paying more attention to the IRL and it was clear it had surpassed Champcars as the top single-seater series in the US. I would like to see a bit more of a mix between ovals/road courses, especially given some of the great road courses America has...

I've been to a couple of NASCAR races at Daytona, it is indeed a fantastic spectator experience, although I think the main NASCAR museum is at Talladega so there's not so much to see from an historical perspective. Indy is on my lifelist but I want to wait until it regains some of its lustre.

Alex Tagliani is back in the Indy 500 after Conquest Racing replaced Bruno Junqueira with him in their #36 car.
Due to the change, Tagliani will start 33rd on the grid.
