Bits of retro in the year, we had Reet Petite at #1 as the year started, then Stand By Me shortly after. The remake of Let It Be after the ferry disaster too, and covers of Everything I Own, La Bamba and Always On My Mind topping the chart too.
We did get the "new" sound of house, although Jack Your Body was just plain boring, but Pump Up The Volume was good.
Startrekkin' was just a bit similar musically to I Am The Music Man and had a similar structure. It was fun, but rubbish. So, in my opinion, was Respectable, although not even so much fun. I just didn't like it, but I was sad when Mel died a few years later. I liked the Rick Astley one although there was a bit too much of a feeling that Stock Aitken Waterman were getting too prominent and would end up destroying real music. Actually I don't think they did, there was enough real music in the chart and new acts breaking throughout the late 80s, although I did welcome Madchester as a "relief" after what had seemed like a bit of a lull.

Bah I was afraid the Pet Shop Boys were going to win.
Love #2 and #3!!! Shame they were mere runners up.

Cheers Smurfie, surprised the Bee Gees were so high, a good #1 though!

There are a few "novelty" number ones in 1986. One of them I will definitely give a good score, and I may well give a good score the one we are all waiting for.

Interesting, and pleasing, that Dick Spatsley and Mel & Kim are still remembered fondly, and outscored Madge and Jacko.
No real surprises for me, except that, like Andy, I'd have predicted the BeeGees a bit lower.
It's probably an age thing, but MARRS and Steve Silk Hurley are still house classics for me, and mark out an important point in the history of dance music.

Thanks for the feedback, chaps. I was VERY surprised Bee Gees came in so high on the list - though I do love the song.
Pet Shop Boys and Whitney - yes, and perhaps MARRS, I would have said Top 3. My personal three would have been: La Isla Bonita, You Win Again, and Respectable - 3, 2, & 1, respectively.

Brilliant top2. I gave 10 to both of them.
I'd probably give Always the nod over Win.

MARRS is a classic but Steve Silk Hurley was just dull. I still hear Pump Up The Volume but never hear anyone play Jack Your Body. Clearly didn't stand the test of time.
You Win Again is probably just "consistent". A song nobody particularly dislikes.
