I don't know your #1 but I really like Bombay Bicycle Club and The National. I don't super love them but they're ok. Funny my #1 by miles this year would be Jonsi, which failed to crack your top 40 I quite like Jonsi's album, it wouldn't be far off the top 40, it's better than a lot of those 29. I've never been much of a fan though, I don't rate Sigur Ros much although I do think that 'Go' is better than any of their albums I've heard.

100 Biffy Clyro 'Many of Horror' 18-09-06- 04-05-09-14-20-35 (9 weeks) *debut*A first ever end of year chart appearance for Biffy Clyro is at number 100 with one of their better efforts 'Many of Horror'. I'm not a massive fan of them and this is my favourite of theirs in a while, most of their best songs were from before I really knew them.099 The Naked and Famous 'Young Blood' 35-29-19-16- 15-18-23-33-39 (9 weeks) *debut*I was first introcuded to this in the summer when I wasn't a massive fan of it, but since I got their very impressive album it's grown on me quite a bit.098 Crystal Castles 'Baptism' 35-30-17-13-09-07- 04-06-14-24-34-40 (12 weeks) *2nd hit*History: 'Courtship Dating' (#40, 2008) After the release of 'Celestica', this second single was a massive contrast but still good. It's not one of my favourite off the album but it's still a very good song.097 Ellie Goulding 'Guns and Horses' 32-25-17-14-13- 11-19-29-38 (9 weeks) *2nd hit*History: 'Under the Sheets' (#33, 2009) From the moment I first listened to here album, this was one of the obvious highlights, one of the more upbeat moments on the album and an impressive pop song.096 Katy Perry 'Firework' 30-22-19- 12* (4 weeks) *2nd hit*History: 'Hot N Cold' (#16, 2008) Some of her songs are incredibly average ('Teenage Dream') but then every so often she releases something which is brilliant. Her latest single, 'Firework', is one of those making it one of the best songs of the year that have actually made the charts.

095 Wild Beasts 'We Still Got the Taste Dancin' on Our Tongues' 26-12-07-03- 02-04-09-18-29 (9 weeks) *2nd hit* History: 'All The King's Men' (#53, 2009) This was released when my love for their album peaked, which is why it's the lowest placed song that made my top 3. It's still a great song though, I adore their singers voice, probably their main strength.094 The Hold Steady 'Hurricane J' 33-24-17-10- 08- 08-11-21-33-39 (10 weeks) *5th hit*History: 'Chips Ahoy!' (#50, 2007) 'Massive Nights' (#15, 2007) 'Stuck Between Stations' ( #05, 2007) 'Sequestered in Memphis' (#61, 2008) It's very much more of the same for The Hold Steady, but more of the same for them is still excellent and 'Hurricane J' is well worthy of a 5th End of Year entry.093 Chemical Brothers 'Escape Velocity' 31-24-15- 11-14-26-34-38 (8 weeks) *7th hit*History: 'Star Guitar' (#18, 2002) 'The Golden Path' (ft. The Flaming Lips) ( #07, 2003) 'Galvanize' (#90, 2005) 'The Boxer' (#45, 2005) 'The Salmon Dance' (#67, 2007) 'Do it Again' (#12, 2007) Their previous album was generally disappoiting with only a few highlights. When 'Escape Velocity' first came out early this year it showed much promise that they might be back towards being at their best and the album certainly lived up to expectations. At 12 minutes in length, this is the longest song in the top 200, and much like their other long songs, doesn't feel that long as it's a place to get lost in for a while.092 Marina and the Diamonds 'Shampain' 38-32-24-15-13- 10- 10-16-23-35 (10 weeks) *2nd hit* History: 'Obsessions' (#58, 2009) Upon the release of 'Hollywood' and her album I'd decided that Marina was massively overrated and didn't see what they hype was about. This opinion lasted until she released this and I forgot about the hype and listened to her for what she actually is. It's much better like that, definitely one of the albums highlights and easy to sing a long to.091 Foals 'This Orient' *3rd hit*History: 'Mathletics' (#40, 2007) 'Cassius' (#56, 2008) 'Spanish Sahara' was easily the best thing I'd ever heard by them, so the second song leaked from the album was crucial. It was this and it was also very good, if also very different. It's far nearer their first album but with added maturity.

090 Jonsi 'Animal Arithmetic' 38-32-26-20-15-14-13- 12- 12-20-38 (11 weeks) *debut*This was a rather large sleeper hit for me, as it kept growing and growing. It's very infectious and sung in Jonsi's typically angelic manner.089 HEALTH 'USA Boys' DNC *debut*The first of four songs in the top 100 which didn't make my personal chart, and I've no idea why. I can only assume I forgot to chart it, because I've always rather liked it. 088 Gorillaz 'Stylo' 28-24-17-10- 09-15-25-39 (8 weeks) *3rd hit*'Dare' (#43, 2005) 'Feel Good Inc.' (#11, 2005) Whilst not quite up to standard of their previous lead singles, this was good enough for a Gorillaz fix. It was very much typical of them, lots of sounds and decent guest stars in the form of Bobby Womack and Mos Def.087 Band of Skulls 'Death By Diamonds and Pearls' 34-27-22- 17-18-26-38 (7 weeks) *debut*I quite liked this and previous single 'I Know What I Am' but it wasn't until I got their album that I begin to appreciate it fully. Very White Stripes-esque.086 Ash 'Sky Burial' [Y] 22-13-11- 10-12-20-35 (7 weeks) *8th hit*History: 'Envy' (#53, 2002) 'There's a Star' (#51, 2002) 'Orpheus' (#81, 2004) 'Starcrossed' (#28, 2004) 'Joy Kicks Darkness' (#87, 2009) 'Return of White Rabbit' (#52, 2009) 'Arcadia' [C] (#22, 2009)
This is one of my favourites from their A-Z series purely because it's so different. Although Irish, Ash were very much of the Britpop era, 'Girl From Mars' being a 90s classic and it's the type of song they've been known for their entire career. 3-4 minute punchy pop songs. So they release a 10 minute instrumental and I'm not sure what to expect, but it's brilliant, and so un-Ash!

085 Yeasayer 'Madder Red' 28-24-19-15-13- 07-10-17-28-40 (10 weeks) *debut*I thought this was one of the better songs on their album from when I first got it and was pleased it was released as a single, an improvement on 'O.N.E.'084 Wild Beasts 'Hooting and Howling' 29-22-16-13-11-10- 09-07-16-30-40 (11 weeks) *3rd hit* History: 'All The King's Men' (#53, 2009) 'We Still Got the Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues' (#95, 2010) The first act to have two songs in the top 100, and it is to be their last. Originally released last year I was unaware of its existence, however upon getting their album this was one of the highlights from first listen. Again, I love the singers voice in it.083 Arcade Fire 'The Suburbs' 38- 22* (2 weeks) *7th hit*History: 'Power Out' (#85, 2005) 'Wake Up' (#50, 2005) 'Rebellion (Lies)' ( #02, 2005) 'No Cars Go' (#39, 2007) 'Keep the Car Running' (#34, 2007) 'Intervention' (#14, 2007) Their current single is probably just about in my top 5 from the album, a much better song than previous single 'Ready to Start', it's a great way to open the album.082 These New Puritans 'We Want War' 28-16-10-06- 04-08-12-21-33 (9 weeks) *debut*What I heard from their debut album was incredibly ropey, so this was a massive pleasant surprise. Completely different, not generic and much darker. A brilliant turnaround.081 Plan B 'Stay Too Long' DNC *debut*When this was first released I wasn't that fussed, but it gradually grew on me when I heard the album. The contrast between his singing and rapping is excellent.

080 Delphic 'Doubt' 25-11- 03- 03- 03-05-09-18-21-27-38 (11 weeks) *3rd hit*History: 'This Momentary' (#66, 2009) 'Counterpoint' (#35, 2009) Somewhat bizzarely, all four of Delphic's singles managed to peak at #3 in my personal chart, all by co-incidence and I didn't even realise until the 4th had done so. I'd say this is the weakest of the four, and was lucky it came out as the the albums lead single, it perhaps wouldn't have got quite so high otherwise.079 Two Door Cinema Club 'Undercover Martyn' 28-17-12-08- 07-11-15-26-38 (9 weeks) *debut*This was the first song I heard by them and it still remains one of their best. A happy 3 minute pop song like most of the album, there's more to come.078 Janelle Monae 'Cold War' 36-32-34-29-25- 17-25-22-19-21-27-34 (12 weeks) *debut* In seven years no song has spent as long as 12 weeks on my personal chart and peaked as low as number 17. But this was one of those songs that kept growing on me and takes a deserving place in my top 100 end of year. One of the strongest songs on her album, she's definitely one of the best and quirkiest stars of 2010.077 Broken Bells 'The Ghost Inside' 35-29-25-14- 12-15-24-37 (8 weeks) *debut*A project from Danger Mouse and James Mercer (lead singer of The Shins) was always going to excite me. The album is consistant if nothing overly special, but this is definitely one of its high points.076 Mumford and Sons 'Roll Away Your Stone' 28-22-18-13-08- 06-07-13-25 (9 weeks) *2nd hit*History: 'Winter Winds' (#26, 2009) Not one of their strongest songs by any means, but a jangly pop song in typical Mumfords fashion can only make for enjoyable listening.

075 Ash 'Dionysian Urge' [L] 36-27- 25-34-37 (5 weeks) *9th hit*History: 'Envy' (#53, 2002) 'There's a Star' (#51, 2002) 'Orpheus' (#81, 2004) 'Starcrossed' (#28, 2004) 'Joy Kicks Darkness' ['B'] (#87, 2009) 'Return of White Rabbit' (#52, 2009) 'Arcadia' [C] (#22, 2009) 'Sky Burial' [Y] (#86, 2010) I have no idea why this performed so poorly in my personal chart as I've always rated it as one of the best of their 'A-Z' series, I'd put it third behind 'Arcadia' and the one left from this year...074 Drake 'Find Your Love' DNC *debut*At first I thought Drake was just a typical US mainstream rapper, just slightly better than the average. But my flatmate is a massive fan and I've recently listened to him a lot more and he's actually quite good. I've no idea why this wasn't a hit, it would surely have been lapped up if it was by Jason DeRulo. By far the best song of its type this year.073 Best Coast 'Crazy For You' 28-23-19-15-09- 07-08-17* (8 weeks) *debut*The only song in the top 100 to be less than two minutes in length, this gorgeous pop song is perfect for summer.072 Kings of Leon 'Radioactive' 22-15-11-07- 06- 06- 06-17-24-33 (10 weeks) *6th hit* History: 'California Waiting' (#68, 2004) 'The Bucket' (#22, 2004) 'Fans' (#62, 2007) 'Use Somebody' (#41, 2008) 'Sex on Fire' (#15, 2008) I was always interested in Kings of Leon's 5th record to see where they went after 'Only By the Night' was so huge. I was pleased but also a bit surprised they hadn't tried to remake 'Sex on Fire' or 'Use Somebody'. I think 'Radioactive' is one of their more interesting tracks, and its use of gospel choir is excellent.071 Tinie Tempah 'Pass Out' DNC *debut*When I first heard this song I thought it was pretty awful, but as the year has progressed it's really grown on me. He sounds so fresh in the current climate, with a very distinctive sound in mainstream rap. 'Pass Out' is deservedly one of the years most successful songs.

070 Vampire Weekend 'White Sky' 34-23-19-14-08- 06-12-15-19-26-37 (11 weeks) *4th hit*History: 'Oxford Comma' (#84. 2008) 'A-Punk' (#13, 2008) 'Cousins' (#70, 2009) Taking the number 70 spot for the second year running is Vampire Weekend, and I think this shows that this year must be stronger as 'White Sky' is a better song than 'Cousins' is. I think 'White Sky' is one of the best on the album and I was glad they released it as a single, it's typical of Vampire Weekend's sound.069 Beach House 'Norway' 39-26-18- 11-14-14-18-25-33-38 (10 weeks) *debut*From my album of the year, it's safe to say this isn't the last of Beach House in this chart. This was the first song I ever heard by them and ignited my love for the band. It's so warm and gentle, the intro is wonderful.068 Doves 'Andalucia' 26-14-10- 07-08-13-18-24-31-37 (10 weeks) *7th hit*History: 'Caught By the River' (#34, 2002) 'Pounding' (#11, 2002) 'THERE GOES THE FEAR' ( #01, 2002) 'Black and White Town' (#30, 2005) 'Winter Hill' (#79, 2009) 'Kingdon of Rust' (#30, 2009) Released in April to accompany their best of, this is classic Doves, a lovely four minute anthem typifying the sound of their career. I'd welcome more in the future.067 The Futureheads 'Heartbeat Song' 31-22-23-19-12- 09-12-24-32-39 (10 weeks) *10th hit*History: 'Meantime' (#94, 2004) 'Decent Days and Nights' (#66, 2004) 'Area' (#19, 2005) 'HOUNDS OF LOVE' ( #01, 2005) 'Worry About it Later' (#43, 2006) 'Radio Heart' (#98, 2008) 'I Wouldn't Be Like This if You Were Here' (#45, 2008) 'Walking Backwards, (#25, 2008) 'The Beginning of the Twist' ( #09, 2008) So, the first act to reach double figures in End of Year chart entries, hurrah! It's thoroughly deserving as well for one of the most consistant bands of the past decade. 'Heartbeat Song' may not be one of their best, but it's still a bloody good song! This and 'Andalucia' appearing mean that only Robyn can become the first person to get the End of Year number one twice.066 Chemical Brothers 'Swoon' 36-29-20-16-12-07- 04- 04-05-08-14-17-24-36 (14 weeks) *8th hit*History: 'Star Guitar' (#18, 2002) 'The Golden Path' (ft. The Flaming Lips) ( #07, 2003) 'Galvanize' (#90, 2005) 'The Boxer' (#45, 2005) 'The Salmon Dance' (#67, 2007) 'Do it Again' (#12, 2007) 'Escape Velocity' (#93, 2010) After the promise of 'Escape Velocity' 'Swoon' pretty much confirmed that they'd taken a route which would turn out to be a good one. An album without guest vocalists was the way forwards and this typifies the album, a great dance track which would be best performed live at a festival.

065 Gorillaz 'Superfast Jellyfish' 20-04- 01- 01-05-13-27-37 (8 weeks) *4th hit*'Dare' (#43, 2005) 'Feel Good Inc.' (#11, 2005) 'Stylo' (#88, 2010) Without a doubt the most random song in this top 100, it's something that Gorillaz have always been capable of though. It could be completely rubbish, but the additions of Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys and De La Soul make this track utterly joyous.064 Owen Pallett 'Lewis Takes Off His Shirt' 40-32-20- 12-14-24-35 (7 weeks) *debut*This was the first song I'd heard by Owen Pallett / Final Fantasy, and I was impressed enough to check out the album. I definitely think this is the best track on it.063 Magnetic Man ft Angela Hunte 'I Need Air' 25-10- 04-05-08-11-14-21-32 (9 weeks) *debut*I wasn't really aware of this when it first came out, it wasn't until I went to uni in mid September that I heard it. It's definitely one of the years finest dance songs, Angela's vocals complementing the song brilliantly.062 Bombay Bicycle Club 'Ivy and Gold' 32-23-19-16-09-07- 03-04-06-11-16-24-31-36 (14 weeks) *2nd hit* *PEAK*History: 'Magnet' (#86, 2009) The lead single for the new all acoustic album, this was the perfect song to lead with. Wonderfully jolly, it still possessed the elements which made their debut so good.061 Ash 'Spheres' 35-30-26-24-22-18- 13-16-17-25-35 (11 weeks) *10th hit*History: 'Envy' (#53, 2002) 'There's a Star' (#51, 2002) 'Orpheus' (#81, 2004) 'Starcrossed' (#28, 2004) 'Joy Kicks Darkness' ['B'] (#87, 2009) 'Return of White Rabbit' (#52, 2009) 'Arcadia' [C] (#22, 2009) 'Sky Burial' [Y] (#86, 2010) 'Dionysian Urge' [L] (#75, 2010) So, my second favourite song from the impressive A-Z series. It's another which shows a different side to Ash, I love the way it builds up throughout the intro.

060 James Yuill 'On Your Own' 34-23-11-07- 03-06-10-15-23-38 (10 weeks) *2nd hit*History: 'No Surprise' (#55, 2009) 'No Surprise' was one of my favourite discoveries from last year, so seeing he had a new single out this year I thought I'd download it. Again I wasn't disappointed, although this is a lot more poppy and upbeat than last year's entry.059 Katy B ft. Ms. Dynamite 'Lights On' 31-22-16-11-09-07- 06* (7 weeks) *Debut*The first time either act has appeared in my End of Year chart. I've grown rather fond of Katy B over the last 3 months or so, and my fondness probably peaked when I first heard this. It's a lot different to 'Katy on a Mission' but good in a different way, I think Ms. Dynamite adds a lot to the song (I didn't think I'd ever say that!) and although it's hardly original or inventive I can't help loving it, really pleased it looks like being a big hit this week!058 Arcade Fire 'We Used to Wait' 40-17-11-10-05- 02-05-10-22-34 (10 weeks) *8th hit*History: 'Power Out' (#85, 2005) 'Wake Up' (#50, 2005) 'Rebellion (Lies)' ( #02, 2005) 'No Cars Go' (#39, 2007) 'Keep the Car Running' (#34, 2007) 'Intervention' (#14, 2007) 'The Suburbs' (#83, 2010) The lead single for an Arcade Fire album is always going to make me excited and so it probably charted artificially high on my personal chart. It's a very good song, and one of the better ones on the album, but it's not quite up to classic Arcade Fire standards.057 Villagers 'Becoming a Jackal' 33-28-16-08-05-03- 01- 01-05-09-11-18-25-36 (14 weeks) *debut*I first checked out Villagers when their album was nominated for the Mercury Prize and this recent single was the standout from it. It's a strong album and a great song which I adored for a month or so, it's the number one single I've gone off most this year though.056 Robyn 'Indestructible' 30-22-18-16-14- 10* (6 weeks) *6th hit*History (Robyn): 'Handle Me' (#95, 2007) 'WITH EVERY HEARTBEAT' ( #01, 2007) 'Dream On' (ft. Christan Falk) (#80, 2008) 'Be Mine' (#64, 2008) 'The Girl and the Robot' (ft. Royksopp) ( #07, 2009) Robyn is the most consistantly successful act on my chart ever. This is her 10th single, and looks like it will become the first one that doesn't reach the top 3 which just goes to show the consistantly high standard she's managed to achieve. It's not particularly weak, it's still a very good song, it's just a bit too similiar to the other two 'Body Talk' singles I think.

055 Paul Smith 'Our Lady of Lourdes' 38-26-20-12-08- 05- 05-08* (8 weeks) *debut*I used to be a massive Maximo Park fan, their debut album still remains one of my favourite from the previous decade, but not so much after their recent material. I downloaded their lead singers debut solo single out of curiosity more than anything else, not really expecting much though. That made me even more pleased when I sat back and listened for the first time. A fantastic first effort which, barring 'Our Velocity', is much better than anything from Maximo Park's two previous albums. It's good lyrically and much more mellow. Once the year has died down and I've finished reviewing (as I always do in December) I shall definitely be downloading the rest of his album.054 Delphic 'Halcyon' 23-16-09-06-04- 03-05-13-28-40 (10 weeks) *4th hit*History: 'This Momentary' (#66, 2009) 'Counterpoint' (#35, 2009) 'Doubt' (#80, 2010) The fourth and final single off their debut album, and their fourth single to reach a peak of #03 on my personal chart! I thought this was a big improvement on 'Doubt' and one of the best tracks on an impressive album.053 Yeah Yeah Yeahs 'Skeletons' 28-23-17- 15-22-37 (6 weeks) *5th hit*History: 'Maps' ( #10, 2003) 'Gold Lion' (#92, 2006) 'Heads Will Roll' (#62, 2009) 'Zero' (#12, 2010) Released at the beginning of the year, this was the final single off one of my favourite albums from 2009, and one of the best songs on it. I've no idea why it didn't do better in my chart as I've always loved it, but it's rectified with a decent End of Year position.052 Two Door Cinema Club 'I Can Talk' 27-20-12-08- 03-06-11-18-24* (9 weeks) *2nd hit* *peak* History: 'Undercover Martyn' (#79, 2010) Their most recent single, and the one which is easily my favourite. Their album is all rather similar but this is even more fun than the rest of it.051 Foals 'Blue Blood' 25-18-08- 04- 04- 04-07* (7 weeks) *4th hit* History: 'Mathletics' (#40, 2007) 'Cassius' (#56, 2008) 'This Orient' (#91, 2010) The fourth single released from this years impressive 'Total Life Forever', is the opening track from the album. It's one of my favourite opening tracks as it sets the mood of the album very well, the long intro building up to the main part of the song.

050 David Guetta ft. Kid Cudi 'Memories' 29-23-14-08-06- 03-05-12-20-26 (10 weeks) *4th hit* *peak* / *debut*History (David Guetta): 'Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away)' (#86, 2006) 'One Love' (ft. Estelle) (#93, 2009) 'Sexy b****' (ft. Akon) (#68, 2009) When David Guetta first released his album, I heard this and it immediately stood out. I thought it was much better than any of the singles he released last year and couldn't understand why he hadn't gone with this. After teaming up with Queen of Flops Estelle Radio 1 ditched this but it was still a pretty successful song in the UK, spending ages in the top 40. I'm sure it could've been huge with the same support as his previous and subsequent hits though. 18 months later and I still adore it, I quite like Kid Cudi and he's definitely suited to dance music if this is anything to go by.049 Liam Frost ft. Martha Wainwright 'Your Hand in Mine' 25-19-13-11-04- 02-03-05-11-17-32 (11 weeks) *debut* / *2nd hit* History (Martha Wainwright): 'Set the Fire to the Third Bar' (ft. Snow Patrol) (#14, 2006) I've never particularly been a fan of Martha Wainwright but I've liked what I've heard from Liam Frost. This is a change of direction for both of them, it's a lot more upbeat than anything I've heard from either of them previously, I imagine if Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan went upbeat it would sound a bit like this, a decent pop song to start the year with.048 Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 'Beat the Devil's Tattoo' 36-32-28-18-10- 07-09-16-36-39 (10 weeks) History: 'Spread Your Love' (#13, 2002) 'Stop' (#13, 2003) 'Ain't No Easy Way' (#47, 2005) After four years away from my End of Year chart BRMC return with something rather excellent. Taking the best bits of all their previous sounds, mixing the Strokes-like Rock N Roll from 'BRMC' and the more bluesy sound from 'Howl', 'Beat the Devil's Tattoo' was born and it's a brilliant tune, up there with their previous best, after a very mediocre two previous albums I didn't think it would ever happen.047 Tunng 'Don't Look Down or Back' 34-30-27-22-17-09-05- 02-07-12-24-37 (12 weeks) *debut* A nice bit of experimental folk now, and it's much better than that description should possibly allow. This song is amongst the year's most gorgeous, completely chilled out and the male and female vocals contrast each other brilliantly.046 Beach House 'Zebra' 40-32-19-12-10- 08-12-16-23-30-33-39 (12 weeks) *2nd hit* *peak* History: 'Norway' (#69, 2010) The third of four from my album of the year, and the song which properly propelled my love for them and the album 'Teen Dream'. It's just so delightful and joyous with such soothing vocals.

045 Sub Focus ft. I Blame Coco 'Splash' 27-19-13-07-04- 03-05-08-12-20-30 (11 weeks) *debut* / *debut*This may be the 4th time (of 5) that I Blame Coco has appeared in the top 200, but the first time she's broken the top 100. Something a bit different to the pop of her album, she teamed up with Drum and Bass act Sub Focus to deliver one of the dance singles of the year.044 Kid Cudi ft. Ratatat and MGMT 'Pursuit of Happiness' 32-21-15-07-05-06- 04-08-12-21-33 (11 weeks) *2nd hit* *peak* / *debut* / *3rd hit*History (Kid Cudi): 'Memories' (ft. David Guetta) (#50, 2010) History (MGMT): 'Time to Pretend' (#23, 2008) 'Kids' (#22, 2008) Three decent if inconsistant acts coming together on one song could go either way. It turned out that each of the three complimented each other massively, and further confirmed Kid Cudi as being incredibly under appreciated, this should've been huge.043 The Courteeners 'You Overdid it Doll' 39-30-16-18-15- 13-15-14-18-29 (10 weeks) *debut* How on earth did this happen? The most generic of generic 2007 indie bands make a good song! It's not only a good song, it's a bloody great one too. A much more polished sound than their debut, relying less on the guitars made for something much more interesting and anthemic.042 Detroit Social Club 'Northern Man' 31-19-09-05- 02-04-09-14-21-24-31* (11 weeks) *debut*By far the standout song on a reasonably strong debut album, 'Northern Man' is quite different to most of their songs. The brilliant use of strings has seen the introduction be used countless times on Sky Sports roundups, but it's far from background music. It's beautifully simple and incredibly charming with a soothing vocal.041 Yeasayer 'Ambling Alp' 30-20-14-12-15-12- 08-13-18-20-21-20-24-29-39 (15 weeks) *debut*Released at the beginning of January, this was a track that kept growing on me rather than being an instant hit. It's continued throughout the year, but its charms aren't quite enough for a top 40 position.

I'll post 40-31 tomorrow, and do the top 30 between Christmas and New Year.
The top 40 features 5 acts who appear more than once, 3 of those feature on songs with other acts too, and just 9 songs which made the UK top 40, 2 of which were number ones! Any guesses as to which two they are?

040 Plan B 'She Said' 27-14- 11-22-33-39 (6 weeks) *2nd hit* *peak* History: 'Stay Too Long' (#81, 2010) I enjoyed this song when it came out but not massively, as the year went on and I listened to his album more I came to realise that this is a fine piece of music. Taking in pop, rap and soul, Ben Drew's vocals and song arrangement are excellent making one of the best selling songs of the year, and deservedly so. This is the highest song which never made my personal chart top 10.039 The Pains of Being Pure at Heart 'Heart in Your Heartbreak' 34-19-12-06- 04* (5 weeks) *4th hit* History: 'Come Saturday' (#69, 2009) 'Higher Than the Stars' (#24, 2009) 'Young Adult Friction' ( #06, 2009) The Pains of Being Pure at Heart were probably my favourite act to emerge from 2009. They released two singles in 2010, this being the second of them, which carried on from where they left off. Their sound remained similar, but it's very distinctive especially for the present day.038 Bombay Bicycle Club 'Rinse Me Down' 31-21-09-03-03- 02- 02-05-09-15-26-37 (12 weeks) *3rd hit* *peak*History: 'Magnet' (#86, 2009) 'Ivy and Gold' (#62, 2010) The second single from their acoustic album, this is more of a reflection on the rest of the album than 'Ivy and Gold' is, it is a bit more upbeat but just as joyous as anything else off 'Flaws'

037 The Maccabees ft. Roots Manuva 'Empty Vessels' 31-23-13-07-04-02-03-06-10-13-19-29 (12 weeks) *2nd hit* *peak* / *3rd hit* / *peak*
History (The Maccabees): 'About Your Dress' (#94, 2007)
History (Roots Manuva): 'True Skool' (ft. Coldcut) (#73, 2006) 'Let the Spirit' (#97, 2008)
Combinations like this shouldn't really work, but this one most certainly does. Roots Manuva is one of my favourite British rappers, and has been criminally underrated for years, and The Maccabees are an improving UK indie band. Take the instrumental from the latter's 2008 single 'No Kind Word's and add Roots Manuva to it and it's a winning combination, one of the surprises of the year.
036 Robyn 'Hang With Me' 28-13-07-02-02-03-05-06-07-11-16-21-28-34 (14 weeks) *7th hit*
History (Robyn): 'Handle Me' (#95, 2007) 'WITH EVERY HEARTBEAT' (#01, 2007) 'Dream On' (ft. Christan Falk) (#80, 2008) 'Be Mine' (#64, 2008) 'The Girl and the Robot' (ft. Royksopp) (#07, 2009) 'Indestructible' (#56, 2010)
She's probably become my favourite pop act of all time with her 'Body Talk' project, 'Hang With Me', lead single from the second part, pretty much confirmed that status. It was a 9th consecutive top 3 hit for Robyn and another fantastic pop song to add to her ever growing collection.
035 Chew Lips 'Slick' 31-14-07-04-02-02-02-05-10-16-27-36 (12 weeks) *debut*
In 'Salt Air' and 'Solo' Chew Lips had released a couple of decent singles in 2009 which both narrowly missed my top 100 singles of the year, but they showed enough promise for me to be interested in their debut album this year. This was released in January and was easily the best song I'd heard by them, unfortunately it would be their last good song, as their album didn't live up to the hype and was very poor indeed.

034 Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse ft. Julian Casablancas 'Little Girl' 30-25-09-05-03- 01- 01-04-06-11-14-19-27-35-37 (15 weeks) *debuts*I'm not overly keen on The Strokes and I didn't rate Julian's solo material that I'd heard, I'd never heard of Sparklehorse and thought Danger Mouse's productions were hit and miss. So why did I feel compelled to download this? I've no idea but I'm glad I did as it's a great song, fantastically produced and Julian's vocals are also excellent. It's a shame it took so long for them to release after a lengthy legal wrangle but it was worth the wait, shame the album wasn't up to much.033 Sleigh Bells 'Tell 'Em' 36-24-13-06- 04-05-11-15-19-25 (10 weeks) *debut*The opening track on their impressive debut album, this sets the tone for the rest of it and is my standout track from it (well along with 'Rill Rill' anyway). It was like nothing I'd heard before this year, punchy guitars and incredible sounds galore with a brilliant vocal performance and lyrics on top, one of the more interesting tracks of this year for sure.032 The Drums 'Forever and Ever Amen' 25-15-04- 02- 02- 02-04-05-08-11-14-21-28-34 (14 weeks) *3rd hit*History: 'Let's Go Surfing' (#94, 2009) 'I Felt Stupid' (#23, 2009) After their excellent 'Summetime EP' they followed it with the rather disappointing 'Best Friend', however this was the lead single for the album and it got me excited for it again. It was everything I'd expected from the album but didn't end up getting, a wondefully catchy indie pop song so perfect for the summer months.

031 School of Seven Bells 'Heart is Strange' 30-23-09-04- 02- 02-03-03-06-10-14-21-34* (13 weeks) *debut*I'd heard a couple of songs by School of Seven Bells before this but they'd only ever been alright, nothing particularly great. But this single is a fine pop song, it's fairly long but far from outstays its welcome, there aren't many 5 minute songs that feel like three minute joys.030 Katy B 'Katy on a Mission' 23-13-12-11-09-07-19-32 (8 weeks) *2nd hit* *peak*[/b] History: 'Lights On' (ft. Ms Dynamite' (#59, 2010) Released in the summer it wasn't until I returned for my final year at uni that I properly heard this. It's a great shame I missed out on a couple of months of listening to this as it's brilliant, I love her vocals, the beat is immense and the production is excellent. Dance single of the year? No, not quite, she's had better herself!029 The Naked and Famous 'Punching in a Dream' 35-26-13-09* (4 weeks) *2nd hit* History: 'Young Blood' (#99, 2010) It's not been out long but I think this song is magnificent, taking everything that was good about 'Young Blood' and making it better, a definite contender to be my first number one of 2011. Off an impressive debut album, this is as good as anything else on it. Their talent is clear and it's obvious they're going places.
