I haven't seen the programme yet. The good news is that the early evening show on Friday is the full 40 minutes. I don't know whether that is a one-off or a permanent change.

Yes, the TOTP repeats are back and were are in to 1985. As a special treat we get the full 40-minute version this evening. John Peel gets the new year started along with Richard Skinner.
Smiley Culture gets things under way. A later encounter with a police officer proved more controversial.
The first part of the chart rundown already. Apparently we will be told why soon.
Up next is Sal Solo, away from Classix Nouveaux with a rather lovely single.
Second bit of the chart. Oh, now we get clips from the whole of the top ten - by popular demand apparently. What a shame it starts with a dirge from Foreigner.
The rundown pauses at number nine for the whole of Paul Young’s song. He’s on again later.
Tears For Fears time now as they are at number eight. Not their best song by any means, but still a good ‘un.
Back to top ten clips with Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Ray Parker Jr.
From the (relatively) sublime to the ridiculous with The Toy Dolls at number five. The word trump has a rather different meaning now.
Next up is Madonna at number four. Like a virgin? I’m not convinced. I think we’d soon get bored of a modern- day TOTP devoting most of the programme to the top ten today.
Clip time again with The Frog Chorus.
Here’s the cunning part of Wham’s double a-side ploy. Now that Christmas is over, they can just play the other side. You know, the one everybody has forgotten.
Not content with breaking all sorts of records, Band Aid are still number one.
We play out with Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five. I wonder if they’ve calmed down by now.

As that was the full length version I (re)watched that live at 19;30 Hours. A much better show than expected.
But it made me realize four things things:
1. (Which suedehead has already mentioned) The bitter irony of Smiley Culture's only Top 40 hit.
2. Sal Solo's single was an obvious attempt at an 1984 Xmas hit, but somehow missed the boat, but became a belated moderate sized hit.
3. The Toy Dolls were really a punk Norman Wisdom tribute act (but they sadly failed to be remotely as successful a Norman Wisdom tribute act as that kid who lived on the now retired darts GOAT Phil "The Power" Taylor's street in Stoke On Trent and left the biggest British boyband of the 1990s).
4. "Everything She Wants" is by a mile the best thing Wham! ever did.

There seem to be more repeats of 1981 than 1985 at the moment...

Tears for Fears the highlight for me.

At least I know there's a yewtreed episode for 24th.
I'd just like more information of what shows are on when without telling me who is going to be on them as that spoils the surprise.

Both of these episodes technically not Yewtreed but rather Smithed... He was presenting 16 episodes a year in 85, 86 and 87, and a few in early 88. I think at one point he even presented four consecutive episodes. Savile is out of the picture now, at last; not sure that DLT around much any more either, if at all.

BBC4 are NOT showing 21st March 1985 as they DO NOT have a broadcast copy. We will then miss THREE shows in a row as it is flanked by Mike Smith episodes which can't be broadcast because he didn't sign the licensing agreement while he was alive and the BBC wish to respect his wishes.

I prefer to know what is on for each episode as it usually decides how much I'm fast forwarding or just enjoying. Occasionally there is the odd song that I cant remember as well, shame we're missing a few eps now

I believe the issue is they have a copy, but it no longer of good enough broadcast quality condition to show: Allegedly, this gives you a taste of their issue with the sound problem with it:

I want To Know What Love Is is such a dreary, miserable record. It takes an age to get to the first chorus and then when it finally does you wish it hadn’t bothered.
Still, there’s some genuinely brilliant, era defining American pop in that top 10 from Prince and Bruce Springsteen. The least said about Russ Abbott the better.

It's been a couple of good episodes, with the Smiths to come I think...

The Smiths may end up with their namesake as DJ though..
Usually someone posts a link to them though.
Ashford & Simpson who appeared at #4 on the most recent show are #1 in my 1970 chart at present as songwriters.

Terrible fake snow in that Bryan Adams video, looked completely like polystyrene.
Phil Collins always dresses like he’s going to work in a bank. What is susudio anyway? Rubbish.
Kirsty MacColl is beyond wonderful. “I loved you then as I love you still, I put you on a pedastal you put me on the pill”. Billy Bragg = genius.
Funny to see a new entry at 40 for You Spin Me Round (Like A Record). I’m predicting big things for that one.
That Billy Ocean video is very odd. It must’ve cost a fortune. The song definitely doesn’t justify the expense.
Then we get to number one, and a dreary American ballad has been replaced by a dreary English one. “Wasn’t it good? Oh so good...” No, no it wasn’t.

I don't remember seeing that Billy Ocean video before. Bizarre doesn't even begin to describe it. It sometimes seems almost obligatory to say that Kirsty MacColl was wonderful, but it's true so I'll say it. Kirsty MacColl was wonderful.
The Barbara Dickson / Elaine Page song isn't great, but the haircuts could hardly be more eighties.
Finally, a quick mention for Lysette Anthony for her role in the Bryan Adams video. She has had a fairly successful acting career, although not quite as lucrative as Courtney Cox after her appearance in the Bruce Springsteen video.

Mick Jones (not of the Clash) wrote that song, and also wrote Eric Clapton's hit "Bad Love". He was 40 years old when that reached #1. That means he was older than both Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, who were both 37 when that duet reached #1. Of course the #1 was partly written by two Swedes.

I didn’t know Foreigner were British. That’s a very misleading band name!

Yeh I think they are actually completely British now as Lou Gramm, the original lead singer, has retired from the band and only does occasional guest spots. Also don't think you will be happy with where they finish in my top 100 of 1985

The Billy Ocean video really is one of the most random WTF videos in the history of popular music (again I can't remember seeing it from back in the day). Lysette Anthony later made a much more high profile appearance in a 1993 UK #8 hit video... That tune to the Barbara Dickson / Elaine Paige track was written by Benny & Bjorn in 1983 with similar themed lyrics expressing their bittersweet feelings for their male partners and at seeing their relationships fall apart.. But alas their two now ex's (Agnetha & Anni-Frida) no longer wanted to carry on their rather famous musical quartet ..... so Lyricist Tim Rice (then partner of Elaine Paige) who by now had already come up with a bunch of lyrics to Chess: The story involves a politically driven, Cold War-era chess tournament between two men—an American Grandmaster and a Soviet Grandmaster—and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other became aware that Abba was no more & got Benny & Bjorn onboard this musical project with their tunes, many of which would otherwise have become a 9th Abba studio album if things were different ..... It goes without saying that Kirsty MacColl is and was wonderful. But I'll be honest with you Russ Abbott's Atmosphere is a work of God like genius compared to earlier hits by Black Lace. .... and I'll never tire of watching this youtube audio visual mash up:
