Do you remember where you were / what you were doing when you heard the news of the untimely deaths of various high-profile music stars?
For those whose deaths I am old enough to remember:
George Harrison - didn't hear about it until the Friday afternoon (he died on the Thursday). The radio was on in the background and I could just about hear enough of the news report to conclude that he had died.
Michael Jackson - was listening to Gold (the radio station) at home, and heard that he had been taken to hospital in the 10pm news bulletin. Shortly before 11pm, the DJ said that there was some 'unconfirmed breaking news' - however, I did receive official confirmation until the following morning when I saw the newspaper headlines.
Stephen Gately - was staying with my mum that day, and went online to be greeted with the news on AOL's front page.
Amy Winehouse - heard it on the news whilst listening to the radio on the Saturday afternoon.
Whitney Houston - went online on Sunday morning and read the news on Wikipedia's front page!
I was not alive when Elvis Presley and John Lennon died. As for Freddie Mercury, I was alive but too young to remember.

The 3 I can recall.
Micheal Jackson: I'd just been on a night out, and got in to the car to drive home, and I heared a load of Michel Jackson songs on the Radio, then the DJ on Heart FM Kent came on after a few songs and said the news.
Amy Winehouse: I was down in Pontins Camber Sands for a short weekend, I had a day out in Hastings, got back to the Chalet and switched the TV on and heared the news, I remeber we were still digesting the Norway Massacure news the day before.
Whitney Houston: I woke, turned the TV on and saw the news first on Sky News.

Elvis Presley: I was downstairs listening to the radio when I heard something about a death and Elvis Presley. I first thought it was someone connected to Elvis but found out later that it was Elvis who died.
John Lennon: Like a lot of Americans, I first heard of the death of John Lennon on "Monday Night Football" when Howard Cosell broke the news that John Lennon had been shot to death outside his apartment building.

Elvis: My Mum was in tears one morning when I got up. She was (still is) a big fan.
Lennon: Everyone was talking about it at school that morning. We didn't bother with the radio at breakfast time, so didn't know. (No tv before Play School in those days).
MJ: CNN at a Canadian airport waiting to fly back to the UK. Had dozens of businessmen transfixed.
Amy, Whitney, most others: BBC website.
Of non pop stars, the most unusual was...
Princess Diana: On holiday in Madagascar. Our tour guide heard about it, and made a special announcement. The only Madagascan tv channel had wall-to-wall coverage of it for 24 hours.

John Lennon, my dad took me halfway to school, as his work was on the way, and as he dropped me off, the news came on the radio, and I remember him telling me to shush while he listened. Elvis, I just remember Way Down being #1 on totp and them playing it with Elvis on the big screen. Freddie Mercury we were in Exeter, and we had a radio in the loo, and I put it on as I got up that morning, and heard the news and went back to tell Mel, as I couldn't believe it!

When Elvis died it was my mum's wedding anniversary and we'd been out for a family drink. Heard it on Radio Luxemburg as we drove home.

Elvis was my mum crying at the ITN 1 o'clock news (probably with Leonard Parkin). School holidays.
Lennon was hearing it on the Today programme on Radio 4 with Brian Redhead and John Timpson.
Cobain, I was in America at the time and saw it on MTV News.
Can't remember any others OTTOMH.

Elvis - I was too young to remember.
Lennon - I heard my mum shriek out loud. Thought she'd chopped her finger or something. It was around breakfast time and I jumped out of bed to hear the news !
Princess Diana - was just about to set off on holiday and was waiting for my wife to get ready ! It was around 5am and I flicked sky news on and the bulletin stated that "princess Diana had died". Very bizarre moment and she must have just been declared dead.
MJ - was on my way to the lakes with the missus and heard it on the radio ! Was a big shock. Also heard that Farrah Fawcett died the same day (less of a shock ) !!
A bizarre one for me was Patrick Swayze. I was on a trekking holiday in Morocco in Sept 09 and was at the summit of Mt Toubkal which is one of the most remote points in N Africa and the guide suddenly told us that Patrick Swayze had died !! How he knew I've no idea !!

Diana was breakfast in a Danish hotel hall. 9/11 was home from high school, first week there and turning tv on to it.
The others are all just news.

Diana was breakfast in a Danish hotel hall. Hm, this is a new hypothesis. Have you told the Daily Express?

diana: i was about 11 years old and had been camping in a tent in the garden. on the morning she died, i had come in to the house to get some breakfast. i remember dropping my glass of orange juice when my mum told me.
michael jackson: i was in oxford on a work trip. i hadn't been watching the news so i had no idea it had happened until my mum (who was a fan) phoned me to tell me late at night.
amy winehouse: i was travelling between bristol and essex and had just got off the train at london paddington. on the way to the underground, i heard someone say that amy winehouse had died, but didn't take it seriously until i got to essex and checked the news.
whitney houston: i checked facebook on my phone in bed and saw lots of people posting about it.
not a celebrity death but one of the most cataclysmic events that i am old enough to remember: september 11th 2001. i was on a field trip with my school in barcelona. we had gone to an aquarium that afternoon and i remember when we came out the teachers gathered us round and told us what had happened. weirdly i remember feeling a sense of relief at first because the teachers were all so upset that we thought something had happened either to one of the students or our parents at home.

you probably mean September 11 2001, greendemon.
Marc Bolan died one month after Elvis. I can't remember where I was when I heard about it though, possibly at school as I would have returned by then.
I was 5 years old when Hendrix died but wasn't really old enough to remember the event and didn't even know who Hendrix was at the time.
By 1977 though I certainly knew who Marc Bolan was, as T-Rex were one of the main artists when I was a child, perhaps more so to me than Elvis who was really a star from the past, although he continued to have hits up to his death, "Suspicion" and "Moody Blue" both reached my chart in its early days. It will be interesting now, if there is any footage, to see Elvis singing Moody Blue on the TOTP when BBC4 revisits it. I think he was on the 31 March 1977 episode doing that song.
On the day Elvis died I was actually sick and in bed most of the day. I remember I was listening to radio 1 and it was on the news.
John Lennon's death was far more tragic for me. It was Chanukah and the night before we had been around a campfire singing Beatles songs. "(Just Like) Starting Over" had just got to #1 in my chart. I think the fact he was murdered was what made it hardest to take. He had abused drugs and if that had killed him instead I don't think there would have been much pity about this death.
Freddie Mercury was a strange one: he had announced his AIDS the day before. I had never stopped liking Queen or thought of them as past it and "The Show Must Go On" was #1 in my chart just before his death was announced: on the Sunday though that he died I had already compiled my chart and he was replaced at #1 by Michael Jackson's "Black Or White". The following week Queen returned to #1 of course. At the time I heard I was at home, probably heard it on the radio or maybe TV. My ex-girlfriend Fiona Lewis was staying with me at the time and I remember talking about it with her. This happened just after Robert Maxwell's death, by the way, and just after Bryan Adams had ended his 16-week run at #1.
Diana's happened on a Saturday night. I was up late, on the internet and listening to playlists to compile my chart but heard mention of something and turned the radio on instead. I went to sleep with the radio on and as is the case when you do that, even when you're sleeping you hear things. So I woke up thinking I had heard that Diana had died but needed to confirm I wasn't just dreaming it.

I remember my mam coming and waking me up really early in Ghent morning to tell me that Diana had died.
Michael Jackson, I had just got back home from a night out with my then girlfriend and I think it was Daz that sent me a text so we put the news on.
Daz also broke the news of September 11th to me on the bus back from college, but we didn't believe him and thought it was something he'd just made up. Wasn't til I got to my grandma's that I could see it for myself on the TV.
I think I was on my way back from work and saw on twitter that a lot of people were talking about Amy Winehouse's death.
The night of Whitney Houston's death I had spent at my ex's sister and brother-in-law's house and when I walked down the stairs was greeted with the question, "Guess who's dead?!"

Only remember these:
Michael Jackson - came downstairs one morning and my mum called me in to look at the TV when she turned it on.
Amy Winehouse - was changing platforms at a train station when my mum rang me just to catch up, then told me the news.
Whitney Houston - On a group trip to Berlin, while we were in a shopping centre I went into an electronics store and saw "Whitney Houston gestorben" on a TV screen.
