I've got to say I'm struggling with my interest with these champs. With Wimbledon, Tour De France, Euro 2012 and the Cricket, I'm finding it hard to get excited about a very sub standard champs. The women's triple jump was won in a truly world class distance of 14.99 though by the Ukranian girl.

On another note in the Jamaican olympic trials Usain Bolt was smoked in the 100m by Yohan Blake in 9.75 seconds. I wonder what odds you can get on a Blake double in the 100m and 200m. I truly think Blake will win one if not both the sprints.

I saw the race on Sky News earlier and Bolt got an absolutely terrible start, yet still came through to finish 2nd in 9.8. If Bolt can sort his start out, I still think he can blow everyone else away in London.
The 200m could be another matter. I'm not sure how much Bolt is focusing on that.
I agree that Blake could well win at least one of them at the Olympics.
I'd love to see Bolt produce something really special in London but really, I don't mind who wins, as long as it's not Justin Gatlin.

Same here H. I'd be disgusted if that cheat wins. I don't particularly like like Tyson Gay either. So I guess Ill cheer for Jamaica then !!

One observation after taking another look at the race:
Blake didn't start well either and stormed past Bolt and Powell (who had a great start) in the final 50m. Makes you wonder how fast Blake is capable of going...
I wonder if what happened in Daegu is still playing on Bolt's mind...

The British Women's 4x100m squad were disqualified in their semi for one of the runners going outside her lane.
This means that the UK cannot now enter a team in the Olympics as only the top 16 in the world are eligible and GB&NI are only 17th.

Not sure when the cut off date is. Don't they have a London Grand Prix In July where they normally do invitation relay races ??
Re Yohan Blake, his 200m last year of 19.26 shocked everyone. I don't think he's capable of 9.58 in the 100m but believe he can get close to 19s in the 200m. Extraordinary !!!

Monday is the cut-off date for the relay rankings.
The cut-off date for individuals to achieve qualifying times is July 8th - a week before the London Grand Prix, but the British squad is likely to be finalised on Tuesday.

I'd like to summarise the highlights of yesterday but there weren't any !! Only decent thing was that both 4 x 400m relay teams looked very decent in qualifying so high hopes for them today.
It was a horrid cold wet night which obviously affected the perfomances greatly.

Yeah, yesterday was poor but I agree the 4x4 teams looked good, particularly the men, who should win gold.
There was a surprise bronze medal for Danny Talbot in the 200m, albeit in a rather pedestrian time of 20.95, thanks to the conditions.
Interesting to see Turkey winning three golds in one night. An emerging power in European athletics, perhaps?

Good silver medal for Jo Pavey in the 10,000m.
No medal for GB in the sprint relay after Dwain Chambers committed the usual British sprinter's error by setting off too early and messing up the first changeover.

Always seems to be the same - mess ups in the relays.
Hubby was screaming at the TV today long before the womens' 4x400m was over. The British girl was a complete disgrace on the last leg - first she challenged too early and then it was obvious she had gotten herself boxed in - a la Lisa Dobriskey.

Wonder if it's worth renaming the thread as Athletics 2012 then we can discuss pre and post Olympics meetings here.
At the diamond league in Paris Dai Greene set a personal best on the 400 mh in 47.84 just 0.02 outside Akabusi's British record !

Sure, why not?
I mentioned Dai Greene in the Olympic thread last night. I didn't realise he was that close to Akabusi's record.
Funnily enough, I was watching that race on Youtube a few nights ago. It was the same race that Kevin Young broke the world record at the Barcelona Olympics.

I loved that race. I'm convinced Kevin Young would've ran under 46.5 if he hadn't started celebrating from the last hurdle !! My other favourite 400mh race was when Andre Phillips won the 88 Olympics which sent Ed Moses into retirement.

Big personal best of 53.78 for Perri-Shakes Drayton at the London Grand Prix tonight. That puts her 3rd in the world this year and right in the mix for an Olympic medal, and 2nd on the UK all-time list, behind Sally Gunnell.

Hope she hasn't done herself a disservice with this?
The media are already making a big houha about it and will pile extra presuure on her.
On the other hand maybe it will draw some attention away from Jessica Ennis.
A bit nervoys about the Brit athletics team at the Olympics. Although home teams always do weell I'm unsure whetehr the Brits can compete at their best under extreme pressure - they mostly seem to crack.
If Ennis and Farrar don't do well in the first two events to be decided it could have a ripple effect through the team.
The first ten (yes ten) athletes in the 10000m at the recent Paris Grand Prix all clocked better times than Farrah's best although the Olympics will be a proper race as such.
The Russian heptathelete disappears for a few years at a time and then comes back for a major championship and posts a big score. Make of that what you will.
