I enjoyed the episode and now that place has doctor who's memories, will that have any significance in the future? The whole story was based on the soldier dying but he didn't, so seemed a bit of a paradox really? And what was the significance of his surname, not being an officiando of the show. And falling out of the tardis was not a good start, nor was her 1st line.

Ah the soldier is related to the brigadier as I expected.

The soldier was obviously meant to be an ancestor of Brigadier Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart, a stalwart of the UNIT-based episodes in the original series. I thought he looked a bit like the Brigadier, so I was proved right! EDIT: Oops, you answered your own question

A fairly underwhelming end to Capaldi's tenure as Doctor.
Certainly not a patch on most of this excellent series (10 of NuWho). It all felt a bit fluffy and lightweight. Whilst David Bradley as the First Doctor did not come off too well for me. Nor did the Testimony avatar Bill plotline.
The WW1 soldier / ancestor of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and plot was the one engaging memory of this Xmas Special.
I have an open mind for the 13th Doctor.
I have no issues with the change of sex, but have concerns as I don't rate Jodie Whittaker as an actress from her previous work I've seen her in (Broadchurch; Trust Me; & one episode of Black Mirror), and worry I'm going to spend from September 2018 lamenting at her accent as to why Chris Chibnall did not hire the superior talents of Maxine Peake or Jane Horrocks for this role.

Maxine Peake is a brilliant actor and would, I'm sure have been very good in the role. I can't help wondering whether she would actually want to take on such a high-profile part.

If nothing else she probably did not want the full Lily Allen/Charlotte Church treatment by the Daily Heil & The S*n for her momentum political beliefs.

She hasn't exactly been quiet about her political beliefs! On a related note, my 13-year-old nephew seems to be coming round to the idea. Back in the summer he insisted that hw would stop watching if there was a woman Doctor. He stuck to that line in the autumn. By yesterday he accepted that 13's first line and the way she was thrown out of the Tardis were a dig at the fans who were indignant at the idea of a woman Doctor. You know, those people who could totally accept the idea of an alien who could change their appearance regularly, but found the idea of said alien changing gender to be utterly implausible.

Decent, if a tad dull, episode. I can't help feeling Capaldi deserved a better send-off.
Very inauspicious start for Jodie.

I still see the sublime "World Enough and Time" and "The Doctor Falls" as Capaldi's big finish. This was a sweet little bonus episode which people could just ignore if they wish, simply switching from about three minutes before the end of "The Doctor Falls" to about three minutes before the end of "Twice Upon a Time". It did the trick for me. Got me sad, happy and excited for the future as a good regeneration story ought to nowadays.

S11 - Episode 1- The Woman Who Fell To Earth: 3/10
That was pretty much what I feared it would be like.
The positives: The cinematography; & the supporting cast have great potential.
The negatives: New showrunner & exec producer Chris Chibnall has been previously responsible for writing some of the worst NuWho episodes; the two weakest episodes of Life On Mars; and I did not like his storylines in Torchwood. Considering what was at stake this opening episode felt like a huge let down. On the basis of this first episode Jodie Whittaker does not have thespian ability to pull off being a good Doctor. She felt far too much of an impersonation of David Tennant's Doctor; and her gurning was off putting. With her accent it felt like a bad Jane Horrocks/Maxine Peake tribute.
Much like when the James Bond franchise was rebooted with Daniel Craig it no longer felt like a James Bond movie and felt more like a British Bourne movie. Ditto that hour did not feel like an episode of Doctor Who and felt much more like a Broadchurch spin off for the Sci-Fi channel; largely due to the juxtaposition of death & humourous moments coming across as really jarring in not a good way.
I will give it a go next week. But much like when some bands lose key personnel and then change musical direction; it is at serious risk of losing me as a fan/viewer going forward.
