Back on 25 July 2009: one month since Michael Jackson had died, we were in the 3 weeks so any charts of this date were compiled later. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was #4 having fallen from #1, Noisettes were #3 with "Never Forget You", Hadfis Huld was #2 with "Kongulo" and #1 was Slow Club's "It Doesn't Have To Be Beautiful.
And at #87 that week was "Saints" by Army Navy, their second and smaller hit of the year which had peaked at #77 the previous week. That was the last we heard of them until now.... Just as the Noisettes are celebrating finally getting to #1, (with Slow Club having peaked at #51 this time around) it would appear their crown may now be under-threat. Their previous singles were more uptempo but this one is very much a Roy Orbison style dramatic ballad.
Second of the new entries is none other than the legendary Bob Dylan who may now be 71 but hasn't stopped recording. It would be quite incredible if he could get a #1 now. He has previously charted, both solo in 1978 with "Baby Stop Crying" and as part of the Travelling Wilbury's. I would have to look up if he has had any other hits of his own, although some of this songs have been hits for others, e.g. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight which charted for Robert Palmer & UB40 in 1990.
Not really surprising to see the Vaccines have the 3rd highest entry. However this song is likely to not reach the heights of the previous 2 singles which is seeing them peak gradually lower now with successive releases. It is good to see them reach the top 40, and they are one of the best bands around at the moment.

The highest new entry this week goes to (The) Milk, who come off the one-hit wonders list having previously topped the chart in 2011 with "(All I Wanted Was) Danger", which was also my Havenvision 9 entry. It finished disappointingly in the bottom half.
Some of the other big names return and do well, including First Aid Kit who had a #2 earlier in the year. Others fail dismally, including Malf who did a big promotion for his latest single to try to drive it into the chart, but unlike the wonderful "Psycho Pretty" which reached the NM top 10, this one had less substance and got lost in the crowd when I came to do the score-up. It's not bad, but there are loads of other "not bad" songs on my list and it didn't make the cut, finishing 34th. I did buy it anyway, I also bought the next 3 above it, which included Alanis Morissette but she failed to make the list too, as did Miss Molly & Me who had a #3 earlier in the year, with their new ditty about their family, and Green Day who have just had two top 20 hits but the screamy bit in this one put me off.

I may have mentioned this already but the current #1 is the 599th so whatever replaces it will be the 600th #1.
It won't necessarily be a new artist. This week's highest entry is by an artist who had a previous #1, back in 2010 with "Nightmare Day". Whilst Fun. climb to #3, their 4th top 5 hit on this chart, and they previously had a #1 with "We Are Young", which entered around this week one year ago. The next #1 might alternatively come from my current playlist, which has a couple of big names on it, or Army Navy may hold out for a while longer yet...

I could never take any band called Rednex seriously I would still blame them for 'Cotton Eye Joe'

It's the same Rednex in theory, in practice that was just the name used by the producers who are from Sweden but the band proper are from Romania.
And Paul McCartney did the frog song, true that was later in his career but will that cause you to discard everything else he's done?

its hardly the same name the great classics songs that RedNex have written and the amazing bands that have been influenced by them no you cant because they had 2 hits 'Cotton eye Joe ' and 'Old Pop in an Oak' which was basically the same song. I was just meaning if you were not the same Rednex you would be mad to use that name. it would be like calling your new band Jive Bunny. But since they are the same band effectively, they can never be forgiven or can they? maybe 'Cotton eye Joe' was their 'Laughing Gnome' and soon they will be hailed as the greatest band/artist on the planet. They were just misunderstood. /me prepares for NM to chart The Cheeky girls comeback duet with Chico titled ' The Greatest Song in The World'. "They are as amazing as The Beatles, they made novelty records too." says Neil sometime in the future. Saying that I have to listen to it now......

No but it was a long time until I could take him seriously again, his output since then has hardly been that good apart from possibly his last album. 'Ebony & Ivory' and 'Pipes Of Peace' were musical crimes as well you know!!

Rednex is the same producer. Cotton Eye Joe was an old folk song - they didn't write it. At the time it was a hit, we'd just had Swamp Thing by the Grid in the chart, which was actually a fine dance track based around a banjo, and Cotton Eye Joe was #1 just after Christmas and at least saved us from what would have been 10 weeks of Celine Dion, so it didn't commit the crime of keeping a classic off the top.
I don't know what you have against Pipes Of Peace, it wasn't that bad, although I always used to substitute the word "play" for "smoke". I would have expected better of McCartney duetting with the legendary Stevie Wonder to come up with a better song than they did. As Stevie Wonder's only solo #1 was even worse, it doesn't put him in a great light, however he's still a legend. And McCartney circa Flowers In The Dirt was very much improved. Not major hit singles although the album did reach #1.
Anyway, here is a new chart:

Zeronic get the highest entry. A relatively unknown band, although they've been around for just over 11 years. They are from Austria and actually had an NM #1 hit back in 2009 with The Price Of Zeitgeist.
In case you are wondering why Pink only enters this week, I only allow songs on my playlist that are "gettable" on spotify and for whatever reason that one was not until last week when the album came out. So it got added. Her biggest previous hit "So What" peaked at #3. This one looks set for a similar peak, but having not entered as the highest entry will be hard-pressed to overtake Zeronic to claim the 600th #1.
