At the time I had never heard anyone American say the letter ‘z’, so I always pronounced Rob Base’s partner in crime “Deejay E To Zed Rock”.

A nice moody number from Elvis Costello 'Sulky Girl'.

Spacehog 'In The Meantime'-catchy indie gem I haven't forgotten this one, though I always preferred Mungo City

EYC 'Black Book'. There are definite George Michael influences in the vocals here.

Reel 2 Real 'Conway' was nowhere near as big as 'I Like 2 Move It' and not as good.

Roachford 'Only To Be With You' - radio friendly and catchy enough.

The Cranes - Jewel. Kind of evolved shoegaze. 1993

Obviously many cover versions have topped the chart; often the original version was a fairly substantial hit, or not a hit at all. Given that it was a Crewe/Gaudio production, "Bye Bye Baby" first came out by The Four Seasons, but only in the US, where it made the top 20. The British hit came from The Symbols, a group which briefly had Adrian "Classic" Gurvitz as a member, but at this time the bassist was Mick Clarke, who would later be a Rubette. It was a minor success, despite being a pretty good version, and perhaps would be one of those songs discovered in later years as a lost classic.
Had it not been for the gargantuan success of the Rollers...

I'd totally forgotten about Starsailor until I was glancing through some past charts. Basically a poor man's Hurricane No. 1.

The Moments had a good few hits in the UK, nothing like their success in their domestic market though where they topped the R&B charts with "Love On A Two Way Street". But their biggest hit came when they teamed up with labelmates The Whatnauts, who didn't make it as far as TOTP. This got to no. 3 in the Year that Music Forgot.

Not just a forgotten hit, but seemingly a forgotten show. Glam Metal Detectives was a quickfire sketch show that made The Fast Show look like Lance Stroll in a Sinclair C5. Simulating channel surfing until landing on something worth watching, which, to open, was an episode of the eponymous series GMD, about a rock band that solved crimes. A sort of pop Jessica Fletcher in that they were always no. 1 where the crime was being committed. The theme from the show made the top 30 and you might recognize the personnel. At least some of them. Doon Mackichan on keys, Sara Stockbridge (fresh from being Vivienne Westwood's muse) on rhythm guitar. Phil "Gilbert the Alien" Cornwell on drums, and Gary Beadle on bass - who had already been in a charting video. The other two were Mark Caven (the band's manager, taking vox on this) and George Yiasoumi. The success of the latter two can be demonstrated by neither having a Wikipedia page. Stockbridge had also already been in an Adam Ant video, but would top the charts via her appearance in "Country House". Mackichan of course would strike gold herself with another sketch show - Smack The Pony.
