One of the most forgotten hits ever is "Waterloo". I bet there's zero chance that you can hum it, let alone sing it.
Yet it was a no. 1 US country hit, and minor top 30 hit here, for Stonewall Jackson.
I believe there was some Scandinavian quartet who stole the song title at a somewhat later date.

Ice MC - Think About The Way, big hit in mainland Europe and I remember hearing it everywhere but apparently only reached #38 in the UK:
The follow-up It's a Rainy Day was similarly big, but reached only #73 in the UK:

Brownstone is a good one - I feel like there were so many R&B girl groups that just grasped at a sorta hit and then just disappeared. Not released in the UK, but this was a Full Force banger by Ex Girlfriend in 1991 (Billboard #78, US R&B #5): Blackgirl had 90's Girl (US #71, R&B #13, UK #23) which is exactly about what you think it is: Shades had "Serenade" just about crack the UK top 75 in 1997 (UK #75, US #88): I could go on, but I'll hold it for now
