Criteria: To reduce repetition a maximum of 10 tracks by an act or vocalist (e.g. Paul Weller (The Jam/Style Council); Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran/Arcadia); George Michael (Wham!/solo); Stephen Morrissey (The Smiths/solo); Alison Moyet (Yazoo/solo); etc) is included in this countdown. So long as a track was released as a new single (not necessarily in the UK or USA) in this decade it is eligible to count; a handful of tracks were released in this decade but had greater success in the 1990s, but they are counted in this decades countdown. in addition if any track was recorded as an album track or b-side, but became a hit in the 1990s then it is counted in this decades countdown.
Tracks which are excluded: 1970s tracks that became hits in the 1980s upon reissue (e.g. Kraftwerk - The Model; B-52s - Rock Lobster; Human League - Being Boiled; Japan - Life In Tokyo; Adam & The Ants - Xerox) Late 1979 hits (e.g. Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall; Michael Jackson - Rock With You; The Clash - London Calling; KC & The Sunshine Band - Please Don't Go) or late 1989 releases which peaked in 1990 (e.g. B-52s - Love Shack; Adventures Of Stevie V - Dirty Cash)
Please feel free to pass your commentary on the tracks/videos/outfits included, the more comments the better

1000 Fleetwood Mac - Hold Me (1982)
"Hold Me" the lead single from their Mirage album was written by Christine McVie and Robbie Patton and it became one of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits in the USA. Released there in July 1982, it peaked at #4. It stark contrast it was released in the UK in June but failed to trouble the Top 75.

999 Ultravox - Love's Great Adventure (1984)
This UK#12 hit from October 1984 was released as a stand alone single to tie in with the imminent release of Ultravox's 1984 compilation album The Collection. The music video features the band members in a humorous parody of Indiana Jones, with Midge Ure being chased across deserts and forests by a ruthless treasure hunter to save the love interest played by his future wife Annabel Giles. In retrospect this video was not the best advert for the continent of Africa, especially with regards to a certain 1984 Christmas single which Midge Ure co-penned.

998 Neil Young - This Note's For You (1988)
After a near decade of making dreadful records, the Canadian rocker returned to Reprise Records and released this social commentary on the increasing corporate and concert sponsorship of rock and pop musicians with this hilarious video which makes fun of the likes of Michael Jackson & Whitney Houston. However, after legal threats from Michael Jackson's attorneys the video was banned by MTV. But Neil Young had the last laugh as once the injunction was overturned, MTV put it into heavy rotation, finally giving it the MTV Video Music Award for Best Video of the Year for 1989 beating one of the nominees .... Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal. The video was directed by Julien Temple.

997 Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes (1981)
Written by Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon in 1974, and made popular by American singer-songwriter Kim Carnes. It spent nine weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was Billboard's biggest hit of the entire year for 1981. The recording won the 1982 Grammy Awards for both Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. The song was also a number one hit in 31 countries, including Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Japan and Brazil, but it achieved more moderate success in the UK (#10 peak). The music video was directed by Russell Mulcahy.

996 Inspiral Carpets - Joe (1989)
The third release by Oldham's Madchester band in May 1989, it failed to trouble the singles chart, but of far greater importance it finished 9th in John Peel's Festive 50 of 1989.

995 Stephanie Mills - Never Knew Love Like This Before (1980)
The former Broadway star came to the public's notice when she portrayed Dorothy in an African American adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz entitled The Wiz, where she began dating Michael Jackson. After they split MJ wrote "She's Out Of My Life" about her. This Reggie (yes the same bloke who produced much of Madonna's first album) Lucas produced track became a USA #6 hit in 1980, as well as reaching #4 in the UK Singles Chart.

994 La's - Way Out (1987)
The debut single by Liverpool's The La's featuring future Cast frontman John Power. As ever this was written by (no it's not Jake Bugg's dad honest) Lee Mavers was released in November 1987 on Go! Disc records and peaked at UK#86.

Can't remember if "Joe" was the first Carpets record I heard, must have been one of them. Top track. Their Cool As F**k t-shirts with the stoned cow on them were banned. IIRC they were originally signed to Reception Records, the Weddoes' label.
Can't think of Kim Carnes without thinking of the HMHB homage...

993 Krush - House Arrest (1988)
This House track by this Sheffield based trio released late in 1987 peaked at UK#3 in January 1988. As the video is very dull, I'd much rather post this "in the studio" performance as it highlight's the singer (Ruth Joy) hilarious inability to dance, whilst the DJ does not exactly look very cool. Little wonder the keyboardist Mark Brydon soon bailed out to have far greater success from the mid 1990s with vocalist Róisín Murphy, as the producer of Moloko.

This 1988 release was originally a #4 hit in their native Germany, but thanks to Radio 1's Simon Bates the best Electric Light Orchestra tribute (until 2013 Duckworth Lewis Method's Third Man) ever became a seasonal hit late in the year reaching UK #14.

991 Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots (1982)
This was her only transatlantic USA & UK Top 40 hit single (USA#23 / UK#8) for this singer songwriter & multi instrumentalist. But what a tune. If you think this sounds familiar well that is due to it being used as the musical bed of Will Smith's Men In Black (1997); and it was partially sung in George Michael's 1996 single Fast Love.

Always preferred British house to the original. Wondering whether we'll see M/A/R/R/S, Jack 'n' Chill, Coldcut, LA Mix, Beatmasters et al in the list. There was an unfortunate side-effect though as D-Mob launched Cathy Dennis onto the music scene.
Freiheit were touted as an outside shot at Christmas number 1. Was really surprised when it peaked low - there were some strong contenders for the top spot, but Petula Clark, Four Tops, Neneh Cherry and Inner City were surprises.

997 Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes (1981)Written by Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon in 1974, and made popular by American singer-songwriter Kim Carnes. A brilliant song . A second great song about a real person's eyes after The Adverts' Gary Gilmore's Eyes (too early for this countdown).

I've made no secret of my love for this song. However it really needs to be heard in full

999 Ultravox - Love's Great Adventure I was a big fan of them in the 80's, and although they have better tracks, still like this with its fun video.
998 Neil Young - This Note's For You I remember this song, not heard it for years, love the way he takes the p*** out of MJ.
997 Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes The video of this song seems very British (so New Romantic, it could have been an Adam Ant video)so not very American. The track reminds me of early summer 81, when the riots started, funny how certain songs associate with certain events.
992 Freiheit - Keeping The Dream Alive It does sound like an ELO missing track, and it did get a lot of airplay around that Christmas.

What an awesome enterprise this is going to be raliverpool. The 80s were the decade when I was truly obsessive about music, but even I have never compiled a Top 1000 of the decade.
From the evidence of the first 10, you have very broad taste too, which is great. I own 8 of these tracks, whilst Shirebloggess has the missing pair (the La's and Neil Young). Top marks for remembering Stephanie Mills.
Of those you've presented so far, the 4 which would certainly make it into my Top 1000 are Fleetwood Mac, Ultravox, who could be one of the bands I'd have to subject to the 10 tracks per artist rule, Kim Carnes, who'd be Top 300, and the fabulous-at-the-time, but now rather dated, Krush. I did some djing while at uni, and, having been one of the first to start playing House, got very excited indeed when British House records started appearing.

A second great song about a real person's eyes after The Adverts' Gary Gilmore's Eyes (too early for this countdown). A third would be pretty high on my list - Altered Images' "See Those Eyes", about Noosha Fox. Incidentally, the two biggest US hits in 1981 were BDE and OJN's "Physical"; both early examples of how videos would become important. The former single could stand on its own merits, but I doubt it would have received airplay with an unknown artist recording it without a videoclip. The latter was gash and surely sold almost entirely because of it having a video.

Thanks for all your comments so far ....
990 Isley Jasper Isley - Caravan Of Love (1985)
This was a 1985 USA R&B #1 hit (and USA Billboard Top 100 #51) originally recorded by Isley-Jasper-Isley, the second half of The Isley Brothers' 3 + 3 lineup of the 1970s. Most of you will be familar with the seasonal 1986 UK #1 hit by the Housemartins where they gave this song the Flying Pickets treatment. Much like the Flying Pickets version of a certain Vince Clarke composition I much prefer the original (I used to enjoy listening to Paul Gambaccini's America's Greatest Hits on Radio 1 on Saturday afternoons when he'd play the movers and shakers in the numerous USA charts) and disliked the cover version.

989 Sheena Easton - 101 (1989)
The Scottish singer (turned half decent actress in the 1990s when the hits dried up) first came into the public eye as the focus of an episode in the British television programme The Big Time presented by Esther Rantzen, which recorded her attempts to gain a record contract and her eventual signing with EMI Records. It is not unreasonable to say that she went on to have a more substantial career than any alumni that has come out of a Simon Cowell Pop Reality TV show having had 15 Top 40 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 (12! more than Leona Lewis has managed, and 9 more than One Direction have currently). This is my favourite track by her. It was written by Prince. Apparently he submitted the instrumental of this, and the tune that became a duet on the "Like A Prayer" album for Madonna to choose one to turn into a collaboration which became "Love Song". Personally I think Madonna made the wrong choice. This track surprisingly failed to trouble the Billboard Top 100 but reached UK #54.
