Top 20 from this week in 1991 on Pick of the Pops. Straight in at 3 it’s Guns N’ Roses with You Could Be Mine, but before playing it Paul Gambaccini warns it has “sentiment and lyrical themes typical of 30 years ago rather than today”. Fair play for still playing it, but has he listened to many songs from today?
I pictured myself in my bedroom aged 14 learning the lyrics off by heart from the cassette, bellowing “with your bitch slap rappin’ and your cocaine tongue you get nothin’ done”, and mentally had a middle-aged “well it didn’t do me any harm” moment.
Next up at 2 was Jason Donovan with Any Dream Will Do, that didn’t need a warning.

Just as well ”Cherry Pie’ didn’t make the top 20 that was a few months earlier but still hehe And yeh he needs to listen to the lyrics of some big grime and trap hits, there was one in particular think it was a Stornzy song.

All change on Pick Of The Pops from October as Paul Gambaccini is replaced by Steve Wright. I'm assuming that move is to give Steve Wright another regular weekly programme alongside his Sunday Love Songs. Gambo moves to a Sunday night programme.

Just listened to Paul Gambaccini's last Pick Of The Pops October 1970 (the year he came to Britain) and October 1993. It was also Phil "The Collector" Swern's last Pick Of The Pops as producer. Steve Wright takes over as the host next time with a new producer.
Next week it's the Most Streamed 90s albums also hosted by Steve then POTP the week after.

I'm just hoping the format of Pick of the Pops is restrictive enough that Steve Wright's personality is not able to shine through. If I hear the word "factoid" I'm liable to launch my radio out of the window.

Oh dear God, it was worse than I expected. It’s the inane wittering I can’t cope with - “Twenty 4 Seven featuring Captain Hollywood who, by the way, was not a real Captain”. It’s like I can feel myself losing vital brain cells every time he starts talking.

I forgot to listen but it looks like I didn't miss much. I suppose we have to give Steve Wright a chance to settle in but it's not a natural home for him (I'm not sure where he's got left to go now though) though I'm not sure who would be a natural fit for it. PG wasn't the right fit either and it was a waste of his talents presenting a programme where you sensed he wasn't happy or comfortable presenting.
I'll try and remember to tune in next week to see how Steve Wright sounds but I do wonder if this is a stop gap for him before he moves elsewhere (perhaps away from Radio2).

On the first hour today 1978, the wrong version of Dippety Day by Father Abraham and The Smurfs was played, they played Sarsaparil by by Bert-Åke Varg & Små Smurfana which was a dutch re-recording.

Steve Wright seems to have hemmed in his act and the programme turns out to be quite listenable after all.

So who will takeover the show now?
If they stay in house, i think Gary Davies is a good candidate, maybe Scott Mills. Personally i'd like to see Bruno Brookes do it.

Ironically (sadly) I listened to it last weekend for the first time in 6/7 weeks, and I thought he has got the hang of this a lot better. Sure he loved his fact(oid)s; but he was getting the balance right between the show format and his DJ personality.

Short term Gary Davies seems the obvious contender ... certainly for an interim period as he is Radio 2's go to safe pair of hands/first off the subs bench which (Mark Goodier; Richard Allinson; etc) did so well.
Unless they bring someone in from outside the current Radio 2 spectrum.
But longer term; especially knowing R2 Head Helen Thomas mindset; then it might be a good place for Greg James to dip his toes into Radio 2 land.

What's wrong with 1974? A discussion that's happening across various related forums as to why this year is hardly ever chosen. link
