I've hardly ever done a monthly chart in December. Back when my chart was based around release dates, it was because there usually wasn't enough good music released in December to warrant doing one. On this occasion, it was because I was concentrating on compiling my end-of-year chart, which is completely stand-alone from the monthly chart.

With my chart now based around when I hear a track, rather than release dates, there was probably quite a bit of stuff on my list that had been carried over from the back end of the year, so I guess this is effectively a combined December/January chart as I probably would've heard some of this stuff in December if I'd done a chart.

This month sees the first non-Scottish #1 since the independence referendum in September. Nadine Shah is the first English #1 since Alt-J topped the chart last June. She is of Pakistani-Norwegian parentage but was born and raised on Tyneside.

It's back! In the greatest comeback since arctic roll, Hamster Hits (or whatever b*st*rd offspring we're onto now) has returned. For how long? I don't know. But I really want to try and make an effort with music this year (and it does take effort because there's nothing good on TV or the mainstream radio stations).

The first chart of the year is a bit of a mix of new stuff and songs that were hanging around at the back end of last year so it's effectively a December/January chart with a bit of stuff from before then chucked in as well. The main thing is I heard them in January and that's the only thing that counts. Plus it's my chart and I make the rules.

As this chart is from a bigger pool of songs than usual, as a one-off it's a top 40 rather than 20!
