"Hit"...utterly brilliant. Mad as a box of frogs, but brilliant.
"Sleeping Satellite" is one of the overlooked number 1s. Came right out of nowhere and although songs like "Lords Of The New Church" were also quality Tasmin Archer seemed to get dropped and forgotten instantly. There were a few in that era who never got to follow up initial success; Beverley Craven comes immediately to mind.

The other two new Go-Go tracks were "Beautiful" and the bitter "Good Girl", both of which showed that their mid-80s split was a tragedy for music - absolute top quality material all round.

185 Marcella Detroit - I Believe 94
The veteran session singer/songwriter released this after being unceremoniously fired from Shakespears Sister by a jealous Siobhan Fahey in 1993 (for her Art Garfunkel-esque turn on the duos biggest hit), Detroit released her studio album Jewel in March 1994. Where this power ballad lead single written by Detroit herself and produced by Chris Thomas made UK #11, Australia #10, and was a sizeable hit across Europe.
184 Various Artists - Perfect Day 97 183 Blur - The Universal 95 182 Erasure - Blue Savannah 90
181 Beth Hart - LA Song (Out Of This Town) 99
A perennial shortlister for Havenvision, this track became a bit of a musical albatross for the blues rock jazz fusion singer songwriter most famous today for her collaboration albums and successful tours with blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Whilst this was completely ignored in the UK (if you erase Mel C covering it poorly), it became a huge international hit making #1 in New Zealand; #5 in Australia; #17 in the USA, and a fair size hit in Northern Europe & Scandinavia. She wrote this Alanis Morissette-esque song at the same time, Hart was singing the lead role in Love, Janis, an off-Broadway musical based on Janis Joplin's letters home to her mother.

Ok Top 200 where things get serious
199-196 love them all, don't know the Kate Bush track.
195-191 yeh Tasmin Archer she just missed by list and don't know that Lemon Trees song I'm sure I bought some of their stuff though, the rest is brilliant.
190-186 Own all of these but only Jesus Jones made the cut for me, all decent though.
185-181 Only Blur made my top 1000 and i don't remember Marcella Detroits song or Beth Hart.

180 Foo Fighters - Everlong 97 179 The High Llamas - Checking In Checking Out 95 178 Paul Weller - You Do Something To Me 95
177 Lush - De-Luxe 90
The 4AD shoegazing outfit (as they were then) recorded this as the lead track from their debut Mad Love EP produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins which made UK #55. After going on to record three albums, in October 1996, tragedy struck the band when drummer Chris Acland committed suicide by hanging himself at his parents' house. After a period of grieving they decided to split.
176 Bomb The Bass - Bug Powder Dust 94
Tim Simenon dance outfit featured Justin Warfield on vocals, rapping over a breakbeat dance track. Lyrically, "Bug Powder Dust" is essentially a homage to the author William S. Burroughs. Crowded with seemingly random images and 'in' references from pop culture, Justin Warfield's lyrics adopt a Burroughs-type view of the world on this frenetic UK #24 track.

175 Shawn Colvin - Sunny Came Home 98
174 Eric Matthews - Fanfare 95
The multi-instrumentalist who lived in Boston released his debut solo record on Sub Pop Records in 1995 "It's Heavy In Here", described as "a darkly luxuriant sequence of exquisitely arranged and executed orchestral pop" from which the Nick Drake fronting The Beatles meets Grunge "Fanfare" was a major Modern Rock hit, not least as it featured former Jellyfish members Jason Falkner & Roger Manning. Since then Matthews has played with the likes of The Dandy Warhols, Mark Eitzel, & Elliott Smith.
173 REM - At My Most Beautiful 99 172 Belinda Carlisle - Live Your Life Be Free 91
171 Les Rythmes Digitales ft Nik Kershaw - Sometimes 99
I'll always associate this with my holiday to France in 1999 where I first heard this France #4 hit, walking round some Hypermarket thinking this sounds amazing, ..... and the singer don't half sound like 80s pop star Nik Kershaw. Of course this was the work of producer/remixer Stuart Price in his French house pseudonym mode. Taken from his Darkdancer album this peaked at UK #56. And the brilliant yet disturbing video is definitely worth viewing.

Dunno if it's come up yet, or it's to come, but my favourite from Lush was "Sweetness And Light". Their dreampop days on their first couple of albums were their best. "De Luxe" is an unusual track, Miki's voice following its own path independently of the backing and the occasional staccato interruption. Resolutely uncommercial - yet back then such material could make the charts.

170 Teenage Fanclub - Sparky's Dream 95
Taken from their 5th and arguably the Scottish alternative rock band's best album Grand Prix, is this delightful slice of melodic The Byrds meets Big Star meets Neil Young's Crazy Horse rock written by Gerard Love which peaked at UK #40.
169 Morrissey - The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get 94 168 The Corrs - Closer 96 167 Bonnie Raitt - I Can't Make You Love Me 91
166 Bic Runga - Sway 97
Taken from the singer songwriter's debut album Drive, which was the best selling album in her native New Zealand that year, came this (the best song Natalie Imbruglia never recorded) the third single which made #1, and won the New Zealand Music Awards Single of the Year. It also made #10 in Australia, was a top 40 his across Europe, and in Ireland. But in the UK it only made #93.

165 Radiohead - Let Down 97
Taken from the best album of the 1990s OK Computer, this track contains multilayered arpeggiated guitars and electric piano with Jonny Greenwood playing a guitar part in a different time signature to the other instruments. It is now regarded by the band as the gateway track to their next album Kid A. With the video that was commissioned for the track it was a hit on US Modern Rock radio, and got significant video airplay.
164 Primal Scream - Movin' On Up 92 163 Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart 90
162 Dubstar - Not So Manic Now 96
Taken from the brilliantly underrated debut album Disgraceful, comes the slice of synth dream pop melancholy from the Newcastle based band with some very bitter storytelling lyrics. I can't ever imagine the Geordie talent vacuum whom only this week slagged off Kate Bush to promote fiX-Factor Cheryl Tweedy Cole Fernandez-Versini having a UK #18 hit from the narrative of a young women trying to raise a child that was born of rape. But then again can you imagine Radio 1, Kiss FM, Heart, Capital, etc playlisting anything remotely lyrically interesting today. Depressing isn't it.
161 Pulp - Sorted For E's & Wizz 95

160 Faith No More - Epic 90 159 The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance) 94
158 Human League - Soundtrack To A Generation 90
The second single from their 6th studio album Romantic?, which was their last on Virgin Records before being dropped was a trademark synthpop track deliberately looking back at the previous decade. Hence the intentionally reductive video. Criminally this track only made UK #77.
157 Adam Ant - Room At The Top 90
After a 5 year sabbatical to focus on his OK, but hardly set the world alight acting career, Stuart Goddard return to what he does best and returned to pop music. Co written with guitarist Marco Pirroni and former Prince co-hort André Cymone. As per normal it features a brilliant video directed by Daniel Kleinman to Adam's visual concept featuring the semi-famous models as Marie Antoinette - Sarah Stockbridge, Calamity Jane - Palas Citron, English riding woman - Phena, Liberty - Miss Jackie. This Fine Young Cannibals-esque track made UK #13 & USA #17.
156 The Wonder Stuff - Size Of A Cow 91

155 Supergrass - Moving 99This would have been far higher but in the early 2000s I discovered this track is somewhat inspired by the 1977 Pink Floyd Animal's album track Dogs www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lgOo8yEIPs. This was the second single from the underrated Oxford Britpop band's 3rd album Supergrass. It made UK #9, and was a hit in Europe. 154 Strangelove - Time For The Rest Of Your Life 94Another potential Haven HIT track I never used (although Thorney still remembered it). The Bristol alternative rock band led by singer Patrick Duff are most remembered for the title track of their debut album, which failed to chart inside the UK Top 100, even though they went on to have six singles chart inside the UK Top 75. 153 The Beloved - Sweet Harmony 93 152 Massive Attack ft Shara Nelson - Unfinished Sympathy 91 151 Madonna - Ray Of Light 98

150 Janet Jackson - Again 93 149 Blur - Coffee & TV 99
148 DJ Shadow - Midnight In A Perfect World 96
Taken from the American DJ & producer's seminal debut album Endtroducing..... comes this slice of ambient dub track featuring samples of "Sower of Seeds" by Baraka, "Sekoilu Seestyy" (English: "The Madness Subsides") by Pekka Pohjola, "The Human Abstract" by David Axelrod, "Dolmen Music" by Meredith Monk, and "California Soul" by Marlena Shaw. It reached UK #54.
147 Aerosmith - Janie's Got A Gun 90
The veteran US rockers scored a Grammy Award winning, MTV Award winning USA #4, Australia #1, Canada #2, etc .... UK #76 smash hit written by Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton. It's a tale about a girl named Janie who takes revenge on her father after being sexually abused by him. Little wonder UK radio ignored it!
146 The Divine Comedy - Something For The Weekend 96

145 B-52's - Roam 90
The post punk band from Athens, Georgia scored a USA #3, UK #17, Australia #11, New Zealand #2 hit with this Nile Rodgers produced track of very catchy harmonic pop. Such a pity the video is terrible.
144 Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over Til It's Over 91 143 Gabrielle - Give Me A Little More Time 96
142 Electrafixion - Zephyr 94
Electrafixion were an alternative rock band, formed by former Echo & the Bunnymen members Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant in 1994. They released one album, Burned, and five singles before splitting up in 1996, due to the reformation of the Bunnymen. This was their shoegazing meets grungy debut which peaked at UK #47.
141 EMF - Unbelievable 90

"Roam" was much better than "Love Shack", and just as big a hit Stateside. I quite liked the lo-fi nature of the video. Obviously had better things to spend the money on.

Hopefully I get 40 in today and then finish off my review of VU & cheating F1 Mercedes driver.
140 Bjork - Venus As A Boy 93
139 Edward Ball - Love Is Blue 97
The former post punk the Television Personalities guitarist and numerous other bands, signed a solo deal to Alan McGee's Creation Records (where he also served as an executive) before it collapsed in 1999, recorded three albums on Creation, of which the second, Catholic Guilt was the most successful resulting in two UK Top 75 hits "The Mill Hill Self Hate Club" (with an all star video), and this early 1970s ELO meets Hunky Dory era Bowie vibe track which reached UK #59.
138 Martika - Love … Thy Will Be Done 91
The American singer-songwriter of Cuban heritage returned with the lead track of her second album Martika's Kitchen with a track written & produced by Prince. This fairly sparse minimalistic hymn like track resulted in becoming a USA #10 hit (her final Top 100 single), UK #9, her only #1 in Australia, and a major hit elsewhere, before after the title track follow up, the dumper beckoned as it did for so many of her "Madonnabe's" contemporaries.
137 Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun 94 136 Beth Orton - She Cries Your Name 97

135 The Black Crowes - Remedy 92
Written by the Robinson brothers (who get along as well as the Gallagher brothers) from the USA Southern rockers second album The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion came this brilliant the best track The Faces never recorded in 1972 rocker. Despite only being the third release from the album it became its biggest hit peaking at UK #24 & USA #48 (& topping the USA Mainstream Rock chart for 11 weeks).
134 Jellyfish - The King Is Half Undressed 91 133 Travis - Driftwood 99
132 Morrissey - We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful 92
Before he became a rent an outrageously controversial opinion joke, the former The Smiths singer made a number of good to great albums of which his third album, Your Arsenal (produced by Mick Ronson), saw a harder glam rock edge to his music with this being the first solo single co-written with his new guitarist Alain Whyte. The UK #17 hit lyrics were written about Morrissey's observation of the Manchester music scene, how the music papers/journalists turned on acts from the Manchester scene whom had subsequently become famous. Funnily enough, the NME review by Andrew Collins for this single was:
"this is by far and away the ex-Smith's WORST single"; describing the music as "the sound of five men bashing around in the darkness in search of a tune"; before finishing the review by announcing "Moz is history, and we'd all do well to learn it."
Quite.
131 Chemical Brothers ft Noel Gallagher - Setting Sun 96

130 Underworld - Born Slippy 96
129 Pearl Jam - Last Kiss 99 In 1998, Pearl Jam released (their cover of the obscure 1961 "death disc" or "splatter platter" by Wayne Cochran) "Last Kiss" on the band's fan club Christmas single; however, by popular demand, the cover was released to the public as a single in 1999. It became the band's highest-charting single, peaking at USA #2, #1 in Australia, #1 in Canada, etc and was a major hit around the world with the exception of the UK where it got completely ignored as they were too busy buying Westlife, Geri Halliwell & S Club 7 records to notice, peaking at UK #42. 128 Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia 94 127 Supergrass - Richard III 97
126 Cathy Dennis - West End Pad 96www.muzu.tv/cathy-dennis/west-end-pad-music-video/236448/For her third and final studio album the Norwich singer/songwriter went away a produced a great Britpop inspired album (Am I The Kinda Girl?) co-written with the likes of (pre-Robbie Williams) The Lemon Trees' Guy Chambers, XTC's Andy Partridge, The Kinks' Ray Davies, and on this track Erasure, Neneh Cherry, Bomb The Bass, Cyndi Lauper, etc producer/songwriter Mark Saunders on what musical sounds like a more 1960s homage dry run of Rachel Stevens' Sweet Dreams My LA Ex which made UK #25.

125 Mansun - Wide Open Space 96
124 Aimee Mann - I Should've Known 93
The first release from the former 'Til Tuesday female songwriter debut album Whatever received huge critical acclaim for its combination of Power Pop and clever lyrical wordplay, but a time when Grunge was dominating the airwaves it did not receive significant airplay. In the UK it made #55, then was released a year later when she was on tour supporting Squeeze (one of the gigs I saw, and hence discovered her, and her back catalogue) it made #45. Ironically, I've included this 1993 Later with Jools Holland performance which features a combination of Squeeze & Stephen Duffy's the Lilac Time backing her.
123 The Pretenders - I'll Stand By You 94 122 Oasis - Acquiesce 95
121 Dubstar - No More Talk 97
The melancholic UK #20 lead single From the Geordie synthpop band's second album Goodbye was again produced by Stephen Hague. It's video was directed by Chris Cunningham, and the track features a sample of Yes' Owner of A Lonely Heart. (Again I first got into them when I saw them live as I thought they were better than the act they were supporting (The Lightning Seeds)).
