My Top 1000 Tracks of the 1990s

After my previous epic 1980s thread I'm going to use the same format (maximum of 10 tracks by artists, which must have been (promo) singles in the world, but not necessarily the UK or USA). I intend to post these up in a quicker format than I used for the 1980s thread, certainly to begin with posting these up in batches of 10 per post, which the more obscure tracks (not selected by Thorney) highlighted by a video, and minimal waffle as to why I like the track.

In 1991 to promote the imminent release of her band's 3rd album Little Magnets Versus the Bubble of Babble, the follow up to their UK #1 album Velveteen, lead singer Wendy James committed career suicide with an infamous interview in Melody Maker by making a lot of typically outrageous claims for herself. She would be the biggest name in pop. She would win Oscars. Before she died, she infamously predicted, the whole world would know her name. Not long after, Transvision Vamp's record company scrapped the release of the band's new album and the band split shortly afterwards. Who could resist a smirk? It looked well and truly over for Wendy. But her self-belief as such she sent a two page handwritten note to Elvis Costello, saying how much of a fan she was, and PS. Did he have any spare songs going free? Six months later she received a cassette containing 10 demos, and offered the services of the Attractions alongside Rolling Stones producer Chris Kimsey. This wonderful car crash is so awful its brilliant UK#34 lead single and the UK#43 album "Now Ain't The Time For Your Tears" was the hilarious result of a top singer songwriter lyrically trolling an aspiring indie wannabe. Obscurity soon Knocked. Now if only Tulisa Contostavlos would text Thom Yorke .....

OMD's song and album titles were littered with references I didn't get at the time.  Dazzle Ships referred to a method of painting ships in bizarre colours in World War I in a way that made it hard to estimate their position.  Tesla Girls was a reference to engineer Nikola Tesla who predicted that women would become the dominant gender.  And, of course - and I did find this out at the time - Enola Gay was the name of the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb.  The last surviving member of the crew died today.

I don't remember that Thompson Twins track at all. And I would have done had I heard it - it's brilliant. Reminds me of The Beloved. Didn't know that Alannah was now Mrs Cauty either. Bit daft to call their album Queer though - The Wolfgang Press used the same name a month before.

Thought Pale Saints did a lot better stuff. But that was their only hit. Such as it was.

Milltown Brothers were from Burnley - a mill town. They even had as merchandise a claret and blue shirt with a Milltown Brothers logo as badge. Not something that a Bluenose would want to wear. They didn't think it through.

In many ways I have music journalist & presenter David "Whistle Test, Smash Hits, Q Magazine, The Word, etc" Hepworth and his love of power pop, not least via his weekly 1990s VH1 show "Round and Around" which enabled me to discover a load of great, yet commercially unsuccessful artists such as this session musician who has been a member of or played on albums by Jellyfish, Beck, Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Air, Brendan Benson, Eric Matthews, .... and some of his heroes ... Paul McCartney, Jeff Lynne, and Ringo Starr. Sadly the video for this appears to no longer be on the internet ... and outdoor video, I remember one scene where he was playing/singing and a big jumbo jet took off behind him, etc. This has been a perennial should I enter it for Havenvision, Hidden Indie Treasures, I'll let you decide whether I was right or wrong not to use it.

To me this grebo act were one of those bands whom I liked initially, but soon got tired of Jim Bob & Fruitbat's sound/antics. For me they peaked with their second album "30 Something", where this superb attack on racism and bullying in the army, released at the start of the Gulf War and consequently banned by the BBC only peaked at UK #48. By the time they were having UK #1 albums; Top 10 singles and headlining Glastonbury I was over them.

Loved that Thompson Twins track, think they had another single just after which was almost as good,their 90s dance stuff was so underrated , Pete Tong was a big supporter I remember I'm sure it was an 'essential new tune'. Also Milltown Brothers should have been on my list think it reached #3 in my chart but these things are bound to happen.

I missed out Stiltskin as it was a rip off of 'Today' and like most Levi ads at that time, the 10 sec guitar riff in the advert was the best bit.

Don't know that Icehouse song at all, last song I heard of theirs was 'Great Southern Land' which was the main song to long forgotten cult movie 'Young Einstein' all I remember is what he looked like and that song, which according to Wikipedia was actually an old track didn't know that.

Only 8 songs I don't know or remember and I like just about everything else, few exceptions.


Oh you just posted 10 more for me that's the weakest bunch so far bit to much soul/rnb for me and I prefer the Trisha Yearwood version of 'How Do I Live' also couldnt stand that bleached out video Leanne Rimes had, she ain't ugly that they had to do that to her,she ain't exactly a model who this,except models I guess, but thats pop music for you, so annoyed me that

The Inspiral Carpets were woefully underrated in my opinion. They made some great songs. The Longpigs (with Richard Hawley) were great too. I don't know much Icehouse beyond Hey Little Girl and Carter USM were, of course, mostly brilliant. Hope to see more of them later.

It's one of the great things that a band like Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine could, for a brief moment, be popular enough to top the charts. They've never really spawned any imitators though - their extremely wry lyrical take evidently too intellectual for those who would have followed.
