900 Celine Dion - Falling Into You 96
899 Next - Too Close 98
One of my favourite R&B singles of the decade. Despite spending 5 weeks at #1 in the USA and being ranked as the #1 in the Billboard Year End singles round up, it spent just 3 weeks in the UK chart peaking at UK#24. Of course three years later it was covered badly by the UK R&B boyband Blue and became a UK#1 smash hit. I can't help but thinking one of the advantages of the internet is today this sort of pop injustice would be far less likely to occur as more people are far more likely to get to know about the original, and subsequently far less likely to buy the more anodyne cover version.
898 Slade - Radio Wall Of Sound 91
897 Missy Elliott ft Da Brat - Sock It 2 Me 97
Taken from her debut album "Supa Dupa Fly", this was her USA chart breakthrough peaking at USA #12, although it also reached UK #33. This Timbaland produced track is based on a sample from "Ready or Not, Here I Come (Can't Hide From Love)" by the Delfonics; and it features another great Hype Williams video.
896 Arab Strap - The First Big Weekend 96 895 Bloodhound Gang - Why's Everybody Always Pickin' On Me? 97 894 Alison Moyet - Whispering Your Name 95 893 The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode 92 892 Babybird - You're Gorgeous 96 891 Janet Jackson - Love Will Never Do (Without You) 90

The last one tonight:
890 The Railway Children - Every Beat Of My Heart 90 889 Warren G & Nate Dogg - Regulate 94 888 Jamiroquai - Too Young To Die 93 887 That Petrol Emotion - Hey Venus 90 886 Monaco - What Do You Want From Me? 97 885 Cyndi Lauper - The World Is Stone 92 884 B*Witched - To You I Belong 98
883 Damn Yankees - High Enough 90
I suspect this is a bit of a controversial selection. The Damn Yankees were a Republican supporting Hard Rock US super-group consisting of Tommy Shaw (Styx), Jack Blades (Night Ranger), Ted Nugent (The Amboy Dukes and a successful solo career), and Michael Cartellone (Lynyrd Skynyrd). Produced by rock producer Ron Nevison this power ballad peaked at USA #3 not least thanks to its video which upset many left-wing groups. It depicts a young drug addict drifter and his girlfriend who commit a series of robberies implying, but not specifically shown, that the drifter may have committed murder. The girlfriend is captured, but the drifter escapes and is corned in his home by the police, where they riddle the house with bullets. The police invade the house, but the drifter's fate is unclear. The girlfriend is given the death penalty and is being read her last rites by a priest while she is being led out of her cell. As the video ends, the priest is revealed to be Ted Nugent noted for his staunch conservative political views and his strong advocacy of the Death Penalty, Pro-Life campaigns, hunting and gun ownership rights; and has been noted for his comments against public health care, public expenditure on drug addictions, and has previous made racist comments to Public Enemy's Chuck D, and described RATM's Zack de la Rocha as "a communist-educated, communist-nurtured subhuman mongrel" after they previous correctly criticised the Right-Wing nut job. As a regular Tea Party benefactor, he has also had his run ins with the law, not least as despite a 28 year age gap he began a relationship with a 17-year-old Hawaii native Pele Massa. Due to the age difference they could not marry so after handing over a financial payment to Massa's parents, Nugent joined Massa's parents in signing documents to make himself her legal guardian! Despite all that this is an infinitely better record than anything Jon Bon Jovi has ever managed.
882 Spin Doctors - Two Princes 93
881 Vegas - Possessed 92
The duo was formed by the former Specials & Fun Boy Three singer Terry Hall and Eurythmics member David A. Stewart. This was the lead single taken from their self titled only album which peaked at UK #32. To my ears it sounds like a cross between the Lightning Seeds and Shakespears Sister which is not too big a surprise considering their respective involvement in those two acts.

Some comments on those above... "Possessed" probably my favourite of the lot. Ridiculous it was not a much bigger hit. Brilliantly-paced song, with the verse sounding like it's leading nowhere, and then that chorus sears like a bolt through the blue. Alison Moyet did some great overlooked singles - "It Won't Be Long" the best of them, they really need her to team up again with F&S for a proper Comic Relief song. It's meant to be about raising money for charity, not odious amoral self-promotion for the latest popwhores. "Crazy For You" I reckon is the perfect Eurovision song. Probably robbed of the top spot by being a traditional slow-burner in an era when everything was hyped into the no. 1 via farcical CD offers. You'd think the industry would have cottoned on it was destroying itself. Short-term thinking. Accountants. "Hippychick" gave The Smiths their only US hit, I think, by the back door. Got to no. 8 in the Billboard sales chart, but couldn't crack the 20 on airplay. Soho had loads of albums but this was their only promoted song. Follow-up " Love Generation" was an absolute stormer; like The Supremes fronting Jesus Jones. Will Republica be in again? Had a thing for Ms Sprackling (who had had a minor US near-hit before joining the band).

Yes 'Hippy chick' should have been in my top 1000 another one I missed, as for Damn Yankees, actually toyed with including that it was a top 5 hit in my chart but I can barely listen to it now hence I left it out.

880 Wilson Phillips - Hold On 90 879 Prince - Gett Off 91 878 Smoke City - Underwater Love 97 877 Conner Reeves - Earthbound 97 876 Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No No No) 94 875 Shed Seven - Getting Better 96
874 Stereolab - Ping Pong 94
Formed out of the remnants of the late 1980s left-wing politik-indie-pop outfit McCarthy, this London based act stubbornly refused to have any significant success despite gems like this their greatest commercial hit which peaked at UK #45 in July 1994.
873 Michael Jackson - You Are Not Alone 95
872 The Cardigans - Carnival 95
The Swedish rock band fronted by Nina Persson released this indie-pop gem as their lead single from their second album "Life". It became their debut UK hit at #35.
871 Madonna - Vogue 90

870 Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You 92 869 49ers - Touch Me 90 868 Neil Young - Harvest Moon 93 867 World Party - Way Down Now 90 866 Diana King - Shy Guy 95 865 Toploader - Achilles Heel 99 864 Air - All I Need 98
863 Dave Matthews Band - Crash Into Me 96
The Virginia Rock band fronted by the singer/songwriter/guitarist had huge success in the USA including 6 #1 albums, but minimal success in the UK, as perhaps their stoner jazz rock sound makes them the natural heirs to the Grateful Dead's throne. This their 5th of 15 USA hits to date is their second biggest peaking at USA #18.
862 The Sundays - Summertime 97
861 Doves - Here It Comes 99
Brothers Jez & Andy (not that one obviously) Williams, and Jimi Goodwin decide after their studios burnt down in 1996 to do a Joy Division/New Order and abandon their Sub Sub moniker and dance orientated music, to become an alternative music band. This was their debut effort which peaked at UK #73. Commercial & critical success awaited them in the 2000s.

Actually their debut was the brilliant 'Cedar Room' as part of the Cedar EP which if I had remembered it would have been in my top 200 argh, but guess I can count it in 00s as the re-issue was a hit then I also bought the Sea EP as well which preceded 'Here It Comes', tbh I forget they were even 90s.

According to the brilliant The Essential ROCK Discography by Martin C Strong; Cedar Room was initially released as part of a 500 10" vinyl EP Cedar, largely to music critics and DJ's. So it was the equivalent of a buzz track today. The second Sea EP was similarly limited to just 500 10" vinyl EP & 500 CDs. It also states the trio's "third" release Here It Comes was their proper debut single release. As it was their first available in non limited amounts and physical formats in normal music stores....

Must give a shoutout for McCarthy - to echo what I said earlier about Carter USM, nobody seems to care much about intelligent political protest any more. Stereolab will make my next project (probably up when I come back off holiday next month) in part because of McCarthyism...

Good to see some Kitchens in your list. They made some great tunes. They were one of several bands I same many times in the 90s as were Stereolab so their presence is welcome too. Superelectric still sounds great today so maybe that will appear later. The Railway Children song is a good piece of indie pop which tends to get overlooked.

860 U2 - Discotheque 97 859 Cake - The Distance 96 858 Dream Warriors - Wash Your Face In My Sink 90
857 River City People - Carry The Blame 90
This folk rock outfit came from Liverpool on this very Texas like track. Released with a cover of the Mama & the Papas standard "California Dreamin' it peaked at UK #13. Vocalist Siobhan Maher later teamed up with ex-Bangle Debbi Peterson in the duo Kindred Spirit on their self titled 1995 album.
856 Imaani - Where Are You? 98
AKA the year the UK was well and truly robbed of ESC victory by 6 points on this delightful Gabrielle meets Des'Ree track. Everybody seems to go on about Gina G two years earlier conveniently forgetting her live vocal on the night was close to hopeless. I remember the 3rd placed Maltese entry from this year was really good as well; but both just got beaten by the very gimmicky Dana International "Diva" from Israel. Which unlike this year's ESC winner from Austria was not sung very well on the night. Bah.
855 Neneh Cherry - Buddy X 93 854 Primal Scream - Kowalski 97 853 M People - One Night In Heaven 93 852 Lisa Stansfield - All Woman 91 851 The Beatles - Free As A Bird 95

850 De'Lacy - Hideaway 95
849 Elvis Costello - The Other Side Of Summer 91
The UK #43 lead single from his eclectic 1991 album "Mighty Like The Rose" was in his own words "an angry Beach Boys pastiche". Worth inclusion for the brilliant line "Was it a millionaire who said Imagine no possessions"
848 England/New Order - World In Motion 90 847 Armand Van Helden ft Duane Harden - You Don't Know Me 99 846 808 State - In Your Face 91 845 Arrested Development - Tennessee 92 844 Puff Daddy ft Ma$e - Can't Nobody Hold Me Down 97 843 Gin Blossom - Hey Jealousy 94 842 Jewel - Who Will Save Your Soul 97
841 David A. Stewart - Heart of Stone 94
Pretentious video aside. This is a ridiculously catchy track which has aged really well despite his quite frankly weak vocals. It only made UK #36, but the likes of Sam Smith or Calvin Harris could do far worse than covering this faux-1970s Isley Brothers meets Curtis Mayfield funk/soul track giving it a 2010s EDM makeover.

835 Aimee Mann - That's Just What You Are 95
Taken from her second solo album "I'm With Stupid". This jaunty USA #93 hit was written by Boston's finest female singer songwriter alongside producer Jon Brion, and features Squeeze's Glenn Tilbrook & Chris Difford on backing vocals.

830 Tindersticks - Travelling Light 95
Taken from the Nottingham Chamber indie-poppers second album Tindersticks, (not to be confused with their debut 1993 album Tindersticks). This UK#51 Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood-esque country ballad is a duet between is a duet between Tindersticks' singer Stuart Staples (and his distinct pub singer vocals) and Carla Torgerson of The Walkabouts.
829 Enya - Caribbean Blue 91 828 The Proclaimers - Let's Get Married 94
827 Imani Coppola - Legend Of A Cowgirl 98
This USA #36 & UK #32 and a worldwide minor hit samples Donovan's Sunshine Superman on this female Beck meets proto-Kelis track, before the kooky American singer/songwriter disappeared back into obscurity ..... until 2008 when she was part of a duo called Little Jackie and became a two time one hit wonder with the even better "The World Should Revolve Around Me".
826 Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way 93 825 PM Dawn - I'd Die Without You 92 824 A Tribe Called Quest - Can I Kick It? 91 823 Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go 96 822 Sinead O'Connor - The Emperor's New Clothes 90 821 Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Happy 91

820 Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues 90 819 Dubstar - Anywhere 95 818 No Doubt - Just A Girl 96
817 Billy Joel - To Make You Feel My Love 97
Written by Bob Dylan. This was the first released version of the track from an Unplugged session by the New York piano man who was a long time friend of Robert Zimmerman which also turned up on his Greatest Hits III album. Joel's version reached USA #50, and was a minor hit in a number of other countries. It was then "recovered" by Bob Dylan for his "Time Out Of Mind" album; then covered by Garth Brooks in 1998 (reaching #1 in the USA Country charts) before disappearing for the best part of a decade before a former BRIT alumni covered it.
816 Peter Gabriel ft Sinead O'Connor - Blood Of Eden 93
The third single from his 6th proper studio album "Us" featured the distinctive Irish singer/songwriter on this powerful personal ballad which peaked at UK #43. Perhaps it inevitable suffered in comparison to the peerless "Don't Give Up".
815 M People - Search For A Hero 95 814 Pet Shop Boys - I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing 93 813 Extreme - More Than Words 91 812 Shaggy - Oh Carolina 93 811 Radiohead - Lucky 97

To clarify on the Tindersticks video, it's not Carla in the clip, but a girl who worked at Rough Trade. You have no idea how hard I fell in love with her just from the video. (And the bloke was the Stix' tour manager - none of the band appears in it.) Perfect synthesis of sound and vision - there's something of the Joe Orton about both. The tragedy of the everyday. Glorious. Would be in my decade top ten. Wouldn't get to number billion nowadays.

808 Luscious Jackson - Citysong 94

Taken from the Canadian singer/songwriter's 4th (2nd internationally released) studio album "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie", its chart performance highlighted how far she had fallen away from her blockbusting 3rd album as it failed to reach the USA Top 100, and peaked at UK #38, despite a hugely entertaining dancing through the years video.

796 Tracy Chapman - Give Me One Reason 95
Taken from her 4th album New Beginnings this superb 12 bar blues track became the female folk singer's biggest worldwide hit (yes bigger than Fast Car) peaking at USA #3 (Year End #6 due to it hanging around the chart); #1 in Canada; #3 in Australia; etc ..... and yet the UK inexplicably completely ignored it.
795 Propellerheads - ft Miss Shirley Bassey - History Repeating 97 794 Massive Attack ft Tracey Thorn - Protection 95 793 All Saints - I Know Where It's At 97
792 Joan Armatrading - Wrapped Around Her 92

790 Blind Melon - No Rain 93
789 Midge Ure - Breathe 96
The title track of his 4th solo studio album may only have peaked at UK #70, and yet it was a major hit across Europe including peaking at #1 in Italy; and "it means nothing to me ....." Austria (7 places higher than his most famous composition "Vienna" peaked!)
788 Crowded House - Weather With You 92 787 Thomas Dolby - I Love You Goodbye 92 786 Fugees - Fu-Gee-La 96 785 Garth Brooks - If Tomorrow Never Comes 90 784 Elastica - Waking Up 95
783 The Kinks - Scattered 93
There are very few songwriters who could write a down to earth unsentimental, yet unsettlingly happy and nostalgic song about death. Ray Davies achieved this with ease. Taken from their 23rd and final (to date) studio album Phobia.
782 Fatboy Slim - The Rockafeller Skank 98 781 Jane Arden - Insensitive 96
