490 Mercury Rev - Goddess On A Hiway 98
489 XTC - Easter Theatre 99 After going on strike in 1993 to get out of their contract with Virgin Records, Swindon's finest self financed 13th studio album Apple Venus Volume 1 was a choral pop affair as evidenced by their first single in over 6 years and its lyric video (way before they became trendy, as a holding marketing tool for streaming purposes). 488 Jimmy Nail - Crocodile Shoes 94 487 The Wonder Stuff ft Kirsty MacColl - Welcome To The Cheap Seats 92 486 Paul Weller - Uh Huh Oh Yeh 92 485 Livin' Joy - Don't Stop Movin' 96 484 The Charlatans - Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over 95
483 Patty Smyth with Don Henley - Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough 92The former singer of the US rock band Scandal (most famous for the major USA hit "The Warrior" in 1984), released this duet with the drummer of The Eagles Don Henley as the lead single from her 2nd solo album. Co-written by Smyth this was a huge hit across the world (USA #2, Australia #2, Canada #1, South Africa #1, New Zealand #1, yet it only made UK#22. Still its title is very true, at least to her husband John McEnroe as anyone with any knowledge of the game of Tennis knows. 482 Robert Palmer - Know By Now 94 481 Goldie - Inner City Life 94

Need a bit of a catch-up.
"Kiss Them For Me" is pristine. Siouxsie sometimes knocked it right off the planet, "Peek-A-Boo" was one of those others that did so. Amazing to think that they started off doing what might loosely be termed "The Lord's Prayer" with Sid Vicious destroying a drumkit.
The KLF make a better Prodigy than Prodigy.
The Grid, of course, featured Dave Ball of Soft Cell. Their much better track "Floatation" [sic] was hugely critically acclaimed, and hugely commercially ignored.
I remember when Sinead O'Connor was on The Smell Of Reeves And Mortimer. Different side to her there. One SO'C single is worth more than the entire career oeuvre of Madonna. Really, really, really don't see why Ms Ciccione is so beloved. She's not even that hot.

Incidentally, Roger Dinsdale, who did the banjo bit on "Swamp Thing", committed suicide in 2009.

480 Black Grape - Kelly's Heroes 95 479 Extreme - Hole Hearted 91 478 Metallica - Enter Sandman 91 477 Stereophonics - The Bartender & The Thief 98 476 Pizzicato Five - Happy Sad 94 475 Eternal - Angel Of Mine 97
474 The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Television The Drug Of The Nation 92
The San Francisco based hip-hop band featuring Michael Franti and Rono Tse was taken from the duo's socially aware debut album Hypocrisy Is the Greatest Luxury. This Gil Scott-Heron inspired track received airplay on Radio 1, an reached UK #44.
473 Travis - More Than Us 98
472 A Tribe Called Quest - Bonita Applebum 90
The 1990s New York hip hop group which featured MC/producer Q-Tip, released this as their debut single (UK #47). It features a brilliant use of the Chic Organisation's instrumental of (Carly Simon's 1982 hit) Why on this De La Soul like track.
471 Natalie Imbruglia - Big Mistake 98

470 Elastica - Line Up 94 469 The Family Stand - Ghetto Heaven 90
468 Curve - Coast Is Clear 91
The London based industrial electronic shoegazing act consisted of singer Toni Halliday (former solo artist on Eurthmics' Dave Stewart's Anxious record label) and instrumentalist Dean Garcia (former touring member of the Eurythmics). This was the lead track from their second EP release (Frozen) which made UK #34. Its video was directed by Sophie Muller.
467 James - We're Going To Miss You 99 466 En Vogue - Don't Let Go (Love) 97 465 U2 - Even Better Than The Real Thing 92 464 Queen - The Show Must Go On 91 463 Paul Weller - The Changingman 95
462 Ween - Freedom of '76 95
The USA genre hopping, lo-fi outfit featuring "the Ween brothers" (Dean Ween, pseudonym for Mickey Melchiondo; & Gene Ween, pseudonym for Aaron Freeman), released this as a single from their 4th album Chocolate and Cheese on Elektra Records. This ode to Philadelphia was a soulful Hall & Oates meets Red Hot Chili Peppers falsetto p*sstake pastiche. The video was directed by Spike Jonze.
461 Elliott Smith - Between The Bars 97

460 Was (Not Was) ft Ozzy Osbourne & Kim Basinger - Shake Your Head 92 459 Kylie Minogue - What Do I Have To Do 91 458 The Boo Radleys - Wake Up Boo! 95 457 Moby - Bodyrock 99 456 The Stone Roses - One Love 90 455 Jimmy Nail ft Mark Knopfler - Big River 95
454 Paul Carrack - Eyes Of Blue 96The veteran Sheffield blue-eyed soul singer scored a UK #40 hit with this song which was also featured in the wretched football movie starring Sean Bean (When Saturday Comes) about a Sheffield United fan who goes on to become their star player. You'd never guess from the title that the former Ace, Squeeze & current Mike + The Mechanics member was a Sheffield Wednesday supporter. 453 Space - Female Of The Species 96
452 Neneh Cherry - Money Love 92The lead single from the Swedish singer's second album Homebrew was a rockier affair, not least due to Slash's guitar work on this track. Sadly, this sample heavy pop, rock and hiphop fusion only made UK #23. 451 The Divine Comedy - The Frog Princess 96

450 Carter USM - Anytime Anyplace Anywhere 90
"Jim Bob" & "Fruitbat"'s maiden UK chart entry (UK #83). This lyrically cynical black humour ode to alcohol(ism) remains for me their finest musical effort. Not least as it takes its title from the 1970s Martini advertising promos. Obviously the finest thing they ever did was attack the annoying presenter Pip Schofield at the 1991 Smash Hits Poll Winners Party.
449 World Party - Is It Like Today 93 448 Sting - If I Ever Lose My Faith In You 93 447 Blur - Tender 99 446 Lenny Kravitz - Always On The Run 91 445 Ben Folds Five - Brick 98
444 The Grays - Very Best Years 94
The Grays were a short-lived power-pop rock band like the Foo Fighters meets the Beatles comprising singer/songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Jon Brion, Jason Falkner (on lead vocals on this track), Buddy Judge, and Dan McCarroll. Despite getting MTV & college radio airplay this was not a hit single.
443 Fatboy Slim - Going Out Of My Head 97 442 Placebo - Pure Morning 98 441 Embrace - All You Good Good People 97

Hm. Still not getting enthused by many of these. Sting I never could stand, acts like Space/Weller/En Vogue were a bit by numbers, and acts like Placebo and Embrace bring to mind the maxim that you have a lifetime to make your first album and 6 months for your second - only their talents just about extended to a single.
I will give kudos to Curve though. "Ten Little Girls", with a little help from JC001, still sears across the synapses like a meteor into a dinosaur herd. Belter.

440 Skunk Anansie - Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good) 97 439 Whale - Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe 94 438 Wyclef Jean - Gone Till November 98 437 Madonna - Deeper & Deeper 92 436 Pet Shop Boys - Can You Forgive Her 93 435 Belle & Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap 98 434 Teenage Fanclub - Mellow Doubt 95
433 The Cardigans - Sick & Tired 94
Taken from the Swedish band's debut album Emmerdale. This was their debut release in their native country which failed to trouble the UK charts, until it was reissued over a year (& one album) later to dent the top 40 at UK #34
432 The Pogues - Tuesday Morning 93
After Shane MacGowan's drinking problems forced him to leave the band in 1991, the London Irish folk-rock band carried on with Spider Stacy taking over lead vocals duties. Excluding the Best Xmas song of all time, (in the spirit of Phil Collins after Peter Gabriel) this became their biggest international success across Europe & Australasia, including reaching UK #18.
431 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall In Love 90

430 Zoe - Sunshine On A Rainy Day 90 429 Scarlet - Independent Love Song 95 428 Manic Street Preachers - From Despair To Where 93
427 Tears For Fears - Raoul & The Kings Of Spain 95
The title track of the pop rock band's fifth album was the second to not feature Curt Smith. By now Roland Orzabal had drafted in longtime collaborator Alan Griffiths, future longtime Bowie bassist Gail Ann-Dorsey, and co-producer Tim Palmer into the band. The single was not a major hit reaching UK #31, and only performed better in Poland and ..... Spain. It was written about Roland Orzabal's Spanish heritage (Orzabal's father was of Spanish-Basque descent, and his grandfather was Argentinian). Raoul was actually Roland Orzabal's name for the first two weeks of his life, but his mother renamed him Roland because the family were then living in England. Orzabal named his own first son Raoul.
426 Supergrass - Late In The Day 97 425 Prince - 7 92 424 The Wallflowers - One Headlight 97 423 Suede - Trash 96
422 Terence Trent D'Arby ft Des'Ree - Delicate 93
Another track to file under songs you should not like, but do. This was the second single taken from the USA singer's third album Symphony or Damn, and it became his biggest international success of his career outside of his blockbusting debut album releases. It features the female vocal talent of Des'Ree Weekes who is otherwise absent from my countdown, largely due to her appalling lyrics.
421 Public Enemy - Welcome To The Terrordome 90

420 Squeeze - This Summer 95 419 Frank Black - Los Angeles 93 418 Tori Amos - Crucify 92
417 Richard Thompson - I Feel So Good 91
Here's a happy, jolly song by the former Fairport Convention stalwart & guitarist about getting out of jail and going on a killing spree. Incidentally, his dad was a former Scotland Yard detective. Taken from the Mitchell Froom produced Rumour & Sigh album.
416 The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 96 415 Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There 96 414 Suzanne Vega - In Liverpool 92 413 The Jayhawks - Big Star 97 412 Seal - Prayer For The Dying 94
411 Feargal Sharkey - I've Got News For You 91
This superb Otis Redding/Sam Cooke blues homage that reached UK #12 was first single from his 3rd & final solo album Songs from the Mardi Gras, before the former Undertone retired to work within the music industry initially as A&R for Polydor Records .... and since 2008 as the CEO of British Music Rights; which seems slightly ironic as this live TOTP performance is far superior to any male contestant that has come out of fiX-Factor UK.

410 Sarah McLachlan - Adia 98 409 Billy Joel - The River Of Dreams 93 408 UB40 - Kingston Town 90 407 Teenage Fanclub - What You Do To Me 92 406 Flowered Up - Weekender 92 405 OMD - Walking On The Milky Way 96 404 The La's - Timeless Melody 90 403 L7 - Pretend We're Dead 92
402 Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder - Carry On 92
The song was first released on the legendary Italian producer's 1992 album Forever Dancing, the first time they had worked together in over a decade. It became a significant hit across Europe including peaking at Italy #2; and Germany #4. The following year, the song closed Summer's 2CD The Donna Summer Anthology. Only in 1997 was it remixed where it became a year later a Grammy Award Winning Dance Recording, and a minor UK #65 hit.
401 Republica - From Rush Hour With Love 98
Everybody seems to remember the technopop punk band (formed by a couple of members of Flowered Up with the former West End actress Saffron on lead vocals) two big hits (already included in my countdown), yet they forget about this Toyah inspired UK #20 track that was the lead single on their heavier sounding second album Speed Ballads.

400 Kirsty MacColl - Mambo de la Luna 99 399 XTC - The Disappointed 92 398 Bonnie Raitt - Something To Talk About 91 397 Jennifer Paige - Crush 98
396 Big Country - Ships (Where Were You?) 93
The 1980s Scottish rock band fronted by the late Stuart Adamson released this powerful ballad as the 2nd single from their 6th album The Buffalo Skinners. This forgotten UK #24 hit was a lament at the decline of the Scottish shipbuilding industry.
395 Ace Of Base - The Sign 94
394 A House - Endless Art 92
The Dublin based indie rock band fronted by Dave Couse had been releasing singles in their native country for 5 years when they were picked up by the small Setanta label, and this list of various artists lyric over Beethoven's Fifth Symphony in the chorus track was produced by Edwyn Collins. Despite significant Radio support it could go no higher than UK #46, despite having already topped the charts in Ireland.
393 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Soul To Squeeze 93 392 Nine Inch Nails - Closer 94 391 Metallica - Nothing Else Matters 92

390 Texas - Say What You Want 97 389 Saint Etienne - Who Do You Think You Are 93
388 The Lightning Seeds - Sense 92
The title track of Ian Broudie's bands second album was co-written by the underrated (The Specials, FB3, etc) Terry Hall whom adds backing vocals to this UK #31 minor hit.
387 Cocteau Twins - Iceblink Luck 90
The Scottish ethereal dreampop band featuring the divine vocals of Elizabeth Fraser scored a UK #38 hit with the lead single from their 6th and final album for 4AD records Heaven Or Las Vegas.
386 Depeche Mode - I Feel You 93 385 The Verve - Lucky Man 97 384 Suede - We Are The Pigs 94 383 REM - Nightswimming 93 382 Gene - Olympian 95 381 Kingsmaker - Ten Years Asleep 93

380 My Life Story - 12 Reasons Why I Love Her 96 379 The Prodigy - Firestarter 96
378 Susanna Hoffs - My Side Of The Bed 91
Every now and then a track comes out which you know is going to be a massive global hit .... only it doesn't become one. This is one of those songs. To this day I'm mystified despite the packaging of the very early 90s Belinda Carlisle meets Wilson Phillips LA production, a relatively raunchy video, and the lead single of the Bangles singing an ode to heterosexual adolescent males (at heart) everywhere ... how did this only made UK #44 & USA #30?
377 Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind 93 376 Ride - Twisterella 92 375 Manic Street Preachers - Faster 94 374 Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives 91
373 Shed Seven - Chasing Rainbows 96
Yes I know Rick Witter's indie Brit-Pop band by numbers from York were a bit on the dull side. But this is a cracking indie pop song which made UK #14.
372 Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19 97 371 Elton John - Something About The Way You Look Tonight 97

I don't think she had enough radio play Susannah Hoffs that is, I'm sure Radio 1 practically ignored her , our local radio station Forth played it a little, just didn't get to enough ears.

370 Radiohead - High & Dry 95
369 PJ Harvey - Send His Love To Me 95
Taken from Polly Jean's critically acclaimed third album To Bring You My Love, this made UK #34 despite being the 3rd release from it. This Flood co-produced track features a black & white Anton Corbijn directed video.
368 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 92 367 Suede - Metal Mickey 92 366 Weezer - Buddy Holly 95 365 The Charlatans - Over Rising 91 364 Madonna - Justify My Love 91
363 Adam Ant - Wonderful 95
This beautifully raw song was the title track of his 8th album (is as like I do you count the Adam & The Ants as a same entity, as they were hired hands) made UK #32 & USA #39 co-written with a briefly reunited Marco Pirroni, alongside USA songwriter/backing singer Bonnie Hayes. Adam's lyrics were written about his relationship with actress Heather Graham breaking up due to his bipolar condition. This was his apology to her.

353 Aztec Camera - Spanish Horses 92
Roddy Frame's outfit released this as a preceding single to their 5th album Dreamland. This very jazzy track was a collaboration with the Yellow Magic Orchestra's Ryuichi Sakamoto which made UK #52.
352 Hothouse Flowers - An Emotional Time 93
Irish rock band with traditional folk, gospel, soul & blues influences fronted by Liam Ó Maonlaí most famous for their 1988 breakthrough hit "Don't Go", released this as the second single from their 3rd album Songs From The Rain. It reached #5 in Ireland and UK #38, and Liam said it was inspired by the music of relatively unknown 1960s folk singer Tim Buckley. I wonder whether his Jeff heard this track?
351 George Michael - You Have Been Loved 97

350 Utah Saints - Something Good 92
349 Bob Geldof - The Great Song Of Indifference 90
The solo career of the former Boomtown Rat makes pretty grim listening to IMHO. And yet of nowhere he produced this pearl of an Irish folk jig with seemingly sarcastic lyrics poking fun of his frequent over earnest po-faced Chariddee persona. This became his biggest solo hit of his career internationally, including UK #15.
348 MC Lyte ft Missy Elliott - Cold Rock A Party 97 347 Saint Etienne - You're In A Bad Way 93 346 Super Furry Animals - If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You 96 345 Sophie B Hawkins - Right Besides You 94 344 Morrissey - Boxers 95 343 Oasis - Supersonic 94 342 Level 42 - My Father's Shoes 92
341 Joan Osborne - St Teresa 96
Taken from the Kentucky born US singer songwriter's debut album Relish, this was the follow up to her blockbusting "One Of Us", where she sounds like a proto-Nelly Furtado on her best album Folklore. Despite me always preferring this, it was only a minor hit internationally, as reflected by its UK #33 placing.

340 Iggy Pop ft Kate Pierson - Candy 90
Taken from the Godfather of Punk's 1990 album Brick by Brick, this duet with the B-52er was an unexpected USA hit reaching USA #28, as well as charting across the world, although in the UK it only made UK #67. One thing is certain it is far superior to the hideous Shiny Happy People.
339 Dan Reed Network - Rainbow Child 90 338 Fiona Apple - Shadowboxer 96
337 Nick Heyward - Kite 93
After a 5 year break the former Haircut 100 lead singer returned with a Very English sounding semi acoustic pastoral pop album titled from From Monday to Sunday. This made UK #44, but was a major airplay hit on USA college rock radio peaking at #4 on the Billboard US Modern Rock chart.
336 Stereophonics - Local Boy In A Photograph 97 335 Marillion - The Hollow Man 94 334 Alanis Morissette - Ironic 96 333 Voice Of The Beehive - I Think I Love You 91 332 REM - Drive 92 331 Moloko - Sing It Back 99
