CONCACAF 2nd round, 1st leg: A surprise result in the Caribbean as Antigua & Barbuda, who reached CONCACAF's final 12 last time around, were soundly beaten at home by St. Lucia, giving them a mountain to climb for next week's second leg. Aruba didn't live up to their inflated ranking as they lost at home to Barbados, while Cuba, who were one of CONCACAF's top seeds four years ago, were held by Patrick Kluivert's Curacao.

Asia's 2nd round got underway in earnest today, though none of the top seeded teams were in action. Palestine thought they'd earned a point when they came from 2-0 down to equalise in stoppage time, only for Saudi Arabia to snatch victory with the last kick of the game. East Timor, the first team eliminated four years ago, continued their improvement with a draw in Malaysia.

Bhutan are brought back down to earth with a bump as they are thrashed by Hong Kong and may be thankful they don't have Japan or Australia still to come.

A minor sensation as Guam pick up their first ever World Cup victory, having lost their only two previous qualifiers by a combined margin of 35-0. Those games were back in 2000 and Guam have been much more active since then, picking up a number of wins over lower-ranked Asian opposition, which helped them climb high enough in the world rankings that they didn't have to play in the 1st round. India suffered a home defeat to Oman in a game they really had to win if they are to make a serious challenge for 2nd place in the group.

A storming start for Syria, who will have something to prove after being thrown out of the last World Cup for fielding an ineligible player. Their 6-0 over Afghanistan was played in Iran.

A great start for the rapidly-improving Philippines, beating Bahrain, who were just one win away from World Cup qualification as recently as 10 years ago. North Korea made a positive start to their campaign, beating Yemen in Qatar.

CONCACAF 2nd round, 1st leg: An opening win for Canada in the Caribbean but they may have expected a bigger margin of victory against Dominica. Canada finished the game with 10 men after their goalkeeper was sent off with 10 minutes to go. Something of a surprise in the Dominican Republic, given the recent improvement they've shown, as they lost 2-1 to Belize. St. Kitts & Nevis almost pulled off a shock victory against El Salvador, coming from behind to lead 2-1, but a late equaliser means they'll go into the second leg level.

CONCACAF 2nd round, 2nd leg: Some dramatic games in the Caribbean as five teams booked their places in Round 3. The most dramatic finish came in Antigua, where Antigua & Barbuda scored three late goals, including two in stoppage time, against nine-man St. Lucia (officially the home team on the night) to progress 5-4 on aggregate. St. Vincent withstood a late fightback from Guyana to hold on for an away goals victory, while Curacao overcame Cuba as well as a delay to the second half due to the weather conditions in Havana. The other two games saw Barbados and Belize extend first leg advantages to progress. The 10 winners from this round will join Jamaica and Haiti in Round 3, with the six winners from that round joining the top six seeds (Costa Rica, Mexico, USA, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago) in the group stages.
