A rare foreign language number one tops the chart written and produced by the French singer/songwriter whom most people in the UK regard as a one hit wonder ... but not with this track.A massive 12 new entries from:- The Jim Morrison penned USA #1 & UK #15 hit based on one of his poems. A bit of a shame the psychedelic rock track sounds too much like the Kinks' All Day & All Of The Night resulting in an out of court settlement with Ray Davies.
- The New York born Ronald Clyde Crosby was a country folk singer/songwriter. This much covered self penned classic made USA #77 was written in 1965 after an encounter with a street performer in a New Orleans jail.
- Produced by Steve Cropper, and written by Redding, Al Bell and Allen Jones, this R&B classic made USA #51. It has been covered by many acts since most notably The Black Crowes.
- This dramatic soulful ballad was written by Welsh songwriter Clive Westlake. It peaked at UK #4 & USA #122.
- This ramshackle lo-fi UK #16 was partly tape recorded by singer/co-writer Steve Marriott in the garden of his Essex home at the time, Beehive Cottage. His dogs can clearly be heard barking in the background. The song was further enhanced and other instruments added later in the recording studio. (One of Marriott's dogs, Seamus, was also recorded howling in the studio for the Pink Floyd track of the same name, from their 1971 album Meddle).
- The Pennsylvania pop group turned to traditional pop for this return to the USA top 10 after a three years absence with this USA #7 take on the minor 1961 USA hit for Glen Campbell.
- The Texas born Bruce McMeans last chart hooray came with this UK #12 blue eyed soul beat track written by Wayne Carson Thompson and produced by Dale Hawkins.
- The five lads from Salisbury scored their eighth and final UK top ten (UK #8) psychedelic pop hit with another Howard and Blaikley penned production.
- Taken from the progressive rock band's second album A Saucerful of Secrets came this Norman Smith produced psychedelic rock track written by bassist Roger Waters. This sarcastic anti-war song featuring a kazoo was his first written addressing the death of his father, before he was born, whilst fighting during World War II.
- The African American entertainer comedic take on the Shorty Long hit peaked at USA #19 and arguably accidentally invented rap music.
- The New York psychedelic electronic music group debut single was a forerunner to the techno/ambient scene.
- The sassy USA #31 (R&B #8) hit was the first of three USA top 40 soul hits for the Nashville based duo produced by Huey Meaux.

At number one a one hit wonder track which until I had the internet I always assumed was by the Mamas & The Papas.Elsewhere, seven more Retro Rewind new entries from:- The progressive psychedelic rock track culled from the UK #1 album Ogden's Nut Gone Flake.
- The self penned USA #2 instrumental hit by the Texas born guitarist and composer, featuring the Wrecking Crew. He was previously most famous for composing the UK #1 hit Cinderella Rockefella which topped the UK charts this year for Esther and Abi Ofarim.
- Written by Van McCoy and Alicia Evelyn, and produced by Carl Davis this pop soul track peaked at USA #34 (R&B #12) to become his 16th and final USA top 40 hit. In the UK it peaked at #9, but fared better in 1987 when a reissue peaked at UK #3.
- The amusing psychedelic rock track written by Frank Zappa, was taken from his band's 1968 album (with the spoof Sgt. Pepper's cover) We're Only in It for the Money.

I must have heard that Friend & Lover song before somewhere, but I can't place it. I don't consciously know the song but listening to it rings all sorts of deja vu bells. Was it sampled in about 1989?
PP Arnold...what a voice she had, and probably still has.

Was it sampled in about 1989? PP Arnold...what a voice she had, and probably still has. It was sampled for the chorus of this USA #19 hit from 1992 by this one hit wonder sub TLC R&B group, and featured in the film and soundtrack of the massive Mo' Money film: As for PP Arnold, here she is from New Year's Eve on the last day of 2014:

The original and best version of a country folk standard tops my Retro Rewind Chart. Otherwise, eight more new entries from:- The popular standard from 1931 which had been recorded circa 60 times prior to this version where the other three members of the Mamas & The Papas are as much on this record as the John, George & Ringo were on The Beatles' Yesterday. It reached USA #12 & UK #11, and went top 20 throughout the world peaking at #1 in Australia.
- A reworked English-language version of the Italian song "Gli Occhi Miei", which was written by Carlo Donida with lyrics by Mogol and originally performed by both Dino (Eugenio Zambelli) and Wilma Goich at the 1968 San Remo festival. Jack Fishman wrote the English lyrics, which bear no relation to the original Italian. A big hit which topped the chart in Australia, Ireland, & Germany. It reached UK #5 & USA #35 for the Welsh singer.
- The Toronto formed rock group third single and breakout hit was written by the band's drummer brother Mars Bonfire. It became their first Canadian #1, and reached USA #2 & UK #30. Whilst the second verse lyric "heavy metal thunder" marks the first use of this term in rock music.
- The pastoral sounding UK #12 single was written and produced by Ray Davies, a peak equalled by Kirsty MacColl's cover in 1989. It would be over two years before they trouble the UK top 30 again. Not that that was as a result of a drop off in the songwriting department.
- The English progressive rock band featuring keyboardist Keith Emerson, instrumental rearrangement of the Leonard Bernstein standard which peaked at UK #21.
- The title track psychedelic baroque pop 1968 album by the French singer/songwriter/producer. As you can guess this was an ode to Brigitte Bardot.
- Originally released as a single by the progressive psychedelic pop duo in 1967, it was rereleased on the back of their one hit with an edited version of the The Story of Simon Simopath album version. Despite receiving reasonable radio airplay this Chris Blackwell produced track just failed to chart inside the UK Top 50.
- The New York born soft rock singer who was over ten years away from his biggest hit, and ten years gone from his debut hit when aged just 15, reached USA #49 & UK #42 with this track co-written with producer Mike Gately.

Yeahhhh, that's the stuff. How in the name of arse could anyone buy the Stewart version when they could have had Patricia's?
Although had I been on the mixing desk for the single I wouldn't have bothered with instruments at all. Just her voice, nothing else.
And it must have been the Krush Perspective single that was ringing bells, although strangely the name doesn't. Sounds like what would have happened had Clivilles & Cole produced the Cookie Crew. Good stuff.

- This blue eyed soul track written by group members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati is a musically upbeat but impassioned plea for tolerance and freedom which struck a chord in the USA after the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy reaching USA #1 with this track co-produced by Arif Mardin.
- Released as the B-side of "Hello, I Love You", this was Jim Morrison's penned ballad ode to the street in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles, California where he lived with his girlfriend Pamela Courson. It also appeared on their forthcoming USA #1 album Waiting For The Sun.
- The Detroit psychedelic rock band were one hit wonders with this USA #16 hit composed by founder member and guitarist Ted Nugent.
- The instrumental USA #17 & UK #30 title track of the Stax house band's eighth album. In the UK it is known for being the theme tune for BBC Television's cricket coverage and later for BBC Radio's Test Match Special.
- The Puerto Rican virtuoso guitarist's Latino acoustic take on the Doors 1967 USA #1 hit. It reached USA #3 & UK #6.
- After four consecutive UK top 5 hits the Birmingham psychedelic pop band moved in a heavier direction, resulting in this single failing to trouble the UK top 50 with this Roy Wood composition. It was probably not helped that the BBC banned it due to the couplet "tied to the bed, she's waiting to be fed"...
- After three consecutive chart misses, the Big O returned to the lower end of the charts at UK #39 with this dramatic ballad.
- The Illinois R&B vocal group fronted by lead singer Marvin Junior signed to a Chess records subsidiary and grabbed a USA #10 (R&B #1) hit.

Produced by The Who's manager Kit Lambert, and executive-produced by Pete Townshend on Track Records, the eccentric frontman of the psychedelic rock outfit grab an outlandish Retro Rewind #1.Otherwise, eight more new entries from:- Taken from USA #1 album Bookends, came this anthemic folk pop track written by Paul Simon and concerns young lovers hitchhiking their way across the United States, in search of "America," one both literal and physical. It was inspired by a 1964 road trip with his girlfriend Kathy Chitty. Belatedly released as a single in 1972 it made USA #97 & UK #25.
- The Roger Waters penned psychedelic rock near instrumental track is taken from their second album A Saucerful of Secrets. It is the band's only track which features all five members of the group as there are several different guitar parts recorded by both David Gilmour and Syd Barrett.
- Songwriter Harry Nilsson wrote the song after calling someone and getting a busy signal. He stayed on the line listening to the "beep, beep, beep, beep..." tone, writing the song. The busy signal became the opening notes of the song. Whilst his Aerial Ballet album cut failed to chart when released as a single. However, music critics and his peers loved it, so within a year Three Dog Night had taken a cover version into the USA top 5; a feat repeated by John Farnham in Australia. Although, I rate Aimee Mann's cover version from the Magnolia OST as the best cover version.
- The Brothers Gibb's soft rocker "about a guy on death row wanting the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife" was originally written to order for Percy Sledge. However, they liked the song so much they wisely decided to keep it gaining a UK #1 (& #1 in Ireland, Italy, & South Africa), USA #8, & Australia #3 hit.
- The long charting UK #31 cover of the blues song first published in 1955 and written by Mertis John Jr, and a hit for Little Willie John; featuring Peter Green's emotive vocal.
- A USA #32 (Country #3) song written by Chris Gantry, taken from the album Wichita Lineman.
- A USA Country #1 written and recorded by American country music artist as the title track of his latest album. It focussed on the pain and suffering he caused his own mother by being incarcerated in 1957 in San Quentin.
- The Manchester pop group's song was written by Geoff Stephens and John Carter. It peaked at UK #8 & USA #101.

Ray Davies' penned timeless anthem gains the Muswell Hillbillies their 6th Retro Rewind chart topper.Otherwise eight more new entries from:- The much covered USA #7 (R&B #1) & UK #19 pop soul duet written and produced by real-life couple Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson. It was to be the last proper duet recorded by the pair as Tammi's malignant tumor on the right side of her brain had returned resulting in her unable to do any promo (she was in a wheelchair for the recording). She died on March 16, 1970 at the age of 24.
- The Cardiff rock group's last single release on Deram records was this UK #6 progressive yet catchy blue beat pop effort.
- The Houston, Texas R&B group's follow up to "Tighten Up" was another Gamble & Huff written and produced effort reaching USA #9 (R&B #5).
- This relatively unlikely Mickie Most produced cover of the post-apocalyptic folk rock song written by Canadian folk singer Bonnie Dobson in 1964, which had been covered by Fred Neil, Tim Rose, & The Grateful Dead, saw the Scottish singer break it into the USA top 100 at USA #52. In the UK it was only released as a B-side.
- Culled from the Birmingham symphonic/progressive rock band's 1967 album Days of Future Passed, this Justin Hayward composition was released in edited form as a single peaking at USA #24.
- Culled from the Birmingham symphonic/progressive rock band's upcoming 1968 album In Search of the Lost Chord, this Justin Hayward composition was released as a single peaking at UK #27.
- The Mississippi soul singer's future Northern Soul anthem reached USA #27, with a song I always erroneously thought was a Tom Jones number when growing up.
- This blues-rock boogie recording based on a couple of traditional blues songs, saw the Los Angeles rock band score their breakthrough hit going top 20 throughout the world including USA #16 & UK #8.

Six Retro Rewind new entries from:
- The Houston, Texas born reggae star whom after a string of minor R&B hits over the previous decade, in 1967 went to Jamaica to record with their musicians. The first result was this rocksteady sounding USA #5 & UK #5 hit.
- This gritty uptempo Atlantic records R&B track was written by Bobby Lance and Fran Robbins. It reached USA #7 (R&B #2) for the Queen Of Soul.
- The California born Barbara Allen was a soul singer with a jazzy feel. Her co-written USA #15 (R&B #3) Brunswick label single meant she was no longer known for writing songs for other acts (Jackie Wilson, Gene Chandler, Peaches & Herb).
- The Alabama born blind American blues and soul singer reached USA #6 (R&B #2) with this cheating ballad. In 1970 he married his backing singer Candi Staton, but they divorced in 1973.
- This punchy R&B track was written by Lula Mae Hardaway, Don Hunter, Stevie Wonder. Alas it only peaked at USA #35 for the young blind Motown protegee.
- Produced by Norman Whitfield, who co-wrote the ballad with Barrett Strong, it is the last single to feature David Ruffin in the lineup. With Eddie Kendricks singing lead, it peaked at USA #26 (R&B #4).

In 1992 when U2's One was slaying the charts all over the world, Bono said when being complimented on that song's greatness in an example of his annoying modesty that comes across as insincere, "well it's probably the best song called "One" ever made!" All I can say is "No Bono that's not true. That's not true is it..."Eleven new entries this week from:- The Texas born country singer born Jeanne Carolyn Stephenson, with this storytelling USA #1 (Country #1), Canada #1, Australia #1, & UK #12 hit written by Tom T. Hall. It was the last song by a female singer to top both national pop and country charts until Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" in 1981. And to think Skeeter Davis turned this song down. Whoops.
- This hard rocking imminent Beggars Banquet album cut was one of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards' most politically inclined works to date. Due to the subversive nature of the lyrics the track got virtually no airplay in the USA. The result was it peaked at USA #48, despite being around the top ten on sales.
- The Hertford, England formed hard rock band's cover of the song penned by Joe South reached USA #4 (& Canada #2). This record featured singer Rod Evans, and bassist Nick Simper who would both be out of the band by the time of their classic line up, but more of that circa 1970...
- The pop group from Lincoln, England with their UK #2 hit which was a cover version of The Bystanders' "When Jesamine Goes" issued in February 1968, and was co-written by Marty Wilde and Ronnie Scott (the Bystanders' manager, not the famous jazz musician), under the pseudonym Frere Manston and Jack Gellar. They had previously won Opportunity Knocks (a show which is hindsight seem not so bad, and far more genuine, than the awful manipulated X-Factor) three times. Not the last time in 1968 that I will be taking about an Opportunity Knocks winner ....
- Written by Pete Townshend during the time that My Generation was being recorded in 1965. In hindsight this UK #26 & USA #25 sounds like the gateway that it was between their previous psychedelic rock sound, and their more rhythmic anthemic work that appeared on the following year's Tommy concept album.
- This more funkier dancier soul track was co-written by producer Deke Richards, and featured Syreeta Wright on the higher vocal parts of this USA #42 hit. It is most famous for being covered in 1989 by The Beatmasters with Betty Boo.
- The Canadian-American roots rock group formerly known as Levon and the Hawks and the Canadian Squires; who became Bob Dylan's backing band, and recorded the famous bootleg The Basement Tapes with him, reached USA #63 & UK #21 with their debut single written by Robbie Robertson which appeared on the group's debut album Music from Big Pink.
- The Brazilian latino easy listening outfit take on the Paul McCartney penned Magical Mystery Tour cut reached USA #6 (AC #1).
- The Psychedelic soul outfit's joyful and frenetic USA #93 & UK #32 hit taken from the album Life. RIP trumpeter and vocalist Cynthia Robinson who died of cancer aged 69 two days ago.
- The London based psychedelic pop group's UK #31 hit, were named after Yoko Ono's avant garde book of the same name.
- Released in the UK as the B-side to their next single "Listen To Me", in the USA it was a minor hit peaking at 93, it also made Australia #51.

A great country and western tale of gossip tops my Retro Rewind Chart. Otherwise eight new entries from:- This slow country blues ballad was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and features Brian Jones slide guitar playing, which was the flipside of their current USA single, and soon to appear on Beggars Banquet.
- The Stax soul duet written by William Bell with producer Booker T. Jones. It reached USA #75 (R&B #18) & UK #8, long before boyband 911 diluted it.
- Eastbourne born Graham Pulleyblank was a pop singer who reached UK #2 & USA #16 with this country pop track written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood.
- Written by Marty Wilde & Ronnie Scott this psychedelic boogie rock track reached UK #8 for the London rock band.

Eight new entries this week from:- The 7:11 rock ballad evolved from "Hey Jules", a song McCartney wrote to comfort John Lennon's son, Julian, during his parents' divorce. It begins with a verse-bridge structure incorporating McCartney's vocal performance and piano accompaniment; further instrumentation is added as the song progresses. After the fourth verse, the song shifts to a fade-out coda that lasts for more than four minutes. It reached #1 virtually everywhere and was the year end best seller in the UK (despite only spending 2 weeks at #1); the USA (9 weeks); Australia (13 weeks); & Canada (3 weeks). In November 2015 it finished in first place in the ITV poll to find the nations favourite Beatles #1 hit (with four McCartney songs finishing in the top 4).
- A song credited to Gene Raskin, who put English lyrics to the Russian romance song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" (lit. "By the long road"), composed by Boris Fomin in 1925. Paul McCartney produced the Welsh folk singer and Opportunity Knocks winner debut single, which was Apple Records second release after "Hey Jude/Revolution". The track reached UK #1 & USA #2, and either deposed or settled behind The Beatles in most most national charts worldwide. It certainly saw off a Chris Andrews produced Sandie Shaw cover of the same song released at the same time.
- The hard rock track written by John Lennon was inspired by political protests in early 1968. In 1987, the song became the first Beatles recording to be licensed for a television commercial, which prompted a lawsuit from the surviving members of the group against the new Northern Songs publishing owner Michael Jackson. in its own right it reached USA #12, but John was pretty bitter that for the 3rd Beatles single running he had lost out on the A-side to Paul.
- The North Carolina pop/blue-eyed soul group's USA #5 (R&B #6) one hit wonders.
- The Los Angeles soul funk group's eleven minute psychedelic acid rock effort written by the two brothers William & Joseph peaked at USA #11.
- The pop group from Kent, England UK #20 debut single was a cover of the The Sunrays 1965 USA hit.
- The English blues pop singer UK #29 hit was composed by Manfred Mann's lead singer Mike D'Abo, and features one Reginald Dwight (Elton John) on the piano.
- The penultimate official single by Australia's finest pop rock group of the 1960s was written by George Young and Harry Vanda. It went on to spend 5 weeks at #2 in Australia behind "Hey Jude". A peak equalled by the 1987 cover version by INXS & Jimmy Barnes for the Lost Boys OST.
