11 Shirelles - Will You Love Me Tomorrow (1wk 11 NEW) 12 Nina & Frederick - Little Donkey (2wks 21-12) 13 Brenda Lee - Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree (1wk 13 NEW) 14 Jerry Butler - He Will Break Your Heart (6wks 24-15-13-11-8-14) 15 Dion - Lonely Teenager (6wks 30-21-16-15-15) 16 Rosie & The Originals - Angel Baby (1wk 16 NEW) 17 Frank Sinatra - Ol MacDonald (4wks 29-17-12-17) 18 Brook Benton - Fools Rush In (4wks 27-21-17-18) 19 Anthony Newley - Strawberry Fair (1wk 19 NEW) 20 Adam Faith - Lonely Pup (2wks 28-20)
21 Gary US Bonds - New Orleans (7wks 17-10-8-7-8-13-21) 22 Floyd Cramer - Last Date (7wks 26-16-11-10-13-16-22) 23 Ray Charles - Georgia On My Mind (11wks 24-7-4-2-2-2-1-1-5-11-23) 24 Duane Eddy - Kommotion (4wks 30-24-20-24) 25 Cliff Richard & The Shadows - I Love You (1wk 25 NEW) 26 Fats Domino - My Girl Josephine (4wks 26-28-24-26) 27 Joe Jones - You Talk Too Much (8wks 16-4-4-3-8-14-19-27) 28 Ventures - Perfidia (5wks 26-18-19-22-28) 29 Mark Wynter - Kicking Up The Leaves (2wks 29-29) 30 Johnny & The Hurricanes - Rocking Goose (9wks 17-12-9-8-7-9-12-18-30)
A non mover for Elvis at #1, but arguably the strongest set of new entries to date: Gerry Goffin and Carole King future standard which became the first USA #1 single by an all girl vocal group; Little Miss Dynamite's 1958 recording which after her first year of chart success was reissued to become a USA #14 hit (it was released in the UK in 1962); this Doo-Wop standard gave the 15 year old Rosie Hamlin her only hit single peaking at USA #5. Like many other artists of the era, the track ended up in protracted legal battles with their independent record label over royalties and credits not least as due to her age the record label tried to rip her off and initially denied her royalties because as a minor she was not entitled to them at the time; the "mockney core blimey geezer" singer songwriter who inspired early (pre Space Oddity) David Bowie recorded this cover of the 1891 folk song; Written by the Shadows' rhythm guitarist Bruce Welch it became Cliff's 1st Xmas #1 in the UK ... rather less grim to listen to than his later Xmas #1's not least as it is non seasonal.

I know teenage music was still finding its feet in the late fifties, but...I cannot for the life of me see how anyone could possibly think of even wondering about buying anything by Adam Faith. Just dreadful, hideous, appalling material. And in an era in which autotune et al were a distant dream, he couldn't sing for toffee. It's like listening to someone with a faulty mike learning English via Linguaphone.

Always thought I Love You was one of Cliff's weakest #1s.
Brenda Lee one of THE classic Christmas songs.
Have a strange liking for Rubber Ball.
Even with Pick Of The Pops many of those tracks are unfamiliar.

And with this you have now completed 1960 (whereas I am just about halfway through once I score up my next playlist).
It's got to be a contest for me between Brenda Lee's Christmas classic and the Shirelles but likely they'll both have a chance at #1 in my chart if there isn't something that beats both of them
If Kathy Young & the Innocents is the original version of the song Billy Fury is about to have a UK hit with it will end up throwing him out of contention in my chart.

Just dreadful, hideous, appalling material. And in an era in which autotune et al were a distant dream, he couldn't sing for toffee. It's like listening to someone with a faulty mike learning English via Linguaphone. What a fantastic description of his voice. The thing is I know his vox would get no chairs turning on a certain TV talent show, yet because his voice sounds wrong it works because it makes it stand out as being distinctive from far more competent singers with better voices. In many ways he was a proto-Kylie Minogue as he was ridiculously popular as a pop star to begin with and yet equally underrated as an actor. Forget his later TV roles, I will always have a soft spot for him co-starring with Sid James, Spike Milligan, Wilfrid Brambell, Carole Lesley, Charles Hawtrey, Terry Scott, Clive Dunn, etc in the British comedy film "What a Whopper" written by Terry (creator of the Daleks, Blake 7, Survivors) Nation, from a story by Jeremy (writer of Are You Being Served? and 'Allo 'Allo!) Lloyd and Trevor ("no no no no no" + more of his sideline writing 1960s pop songs later) Peacock.

Even with Pick Of The Pops many of those tracks are unfamiliar. The thing is I'm comparing contemporary USA & UK charts and I'm personally finding a number of doo-wop; R&B; country & jazz tracks which were sizeable hits in the USA which failed to chart (highly) in the UK which I seem to prefer to UK only hits from 1960.

Are you going to make a "chart of the year" for 1960? I'm pretty certain I'm going to do it for every year.
