Percy Faith achieves a month at #1 on my chart, but on the week the UK chart expanded from a top 30 to a top 50, it is some what apt my chart contains 7 new entries, albeit most are US based. Liverpool's Ronald Wycherley scores a high debut with his first UK Top 10 hit; the "Queen of R'n'B" charts with her USA #62 hit, a place above the King Of Soul" with his USA #50 hit; the American actress debuts with her USA #3/UK #9 track; a place above the USA #8/UK #2 hit; a USA #3 song by country music singer Johnny Horton and Tillman Franks, based on the pursuit and eventual sinking of the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941, during World War II; and a Jazz/Blues USA #53 cover of the 1944 popular standard written with music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Johnny Burke.

Johnny Horton liked his storytelling songs, he had already topped the US charts with "The Battle Of New Orleans" and will hit the UK charts again with a theme tune. Might have heard a lot more than him had a drunk student not driven his truck through his car one fateful night in November 1960...

A quiet week for my chart sees two new entries from a track co-penned by Berry Gordy Jr. on the climb to USA #9/UK #35; and a UK #34 debut for a highly respected "chirpy Cockney" within the music industry who has gone on to do bigger and better things, as did a couple of his family.

Might have heard a lot more than him had a drunk student not driven his truck through his car one fateful night in November 1960... Apart from Public Service Broadcasting nobody else seems to be doing history telling in music any more. This reminds me to thank my 1998 copy of Fred Bronson's The Billboard Book Of Number One Hits. In the pre-internet age it was a fascinating read, especially for artists/acts I was unfamiliar with and various juicy factoids.... Such as for #54 Johnny Horton - The Battle Of New Orleans "On the fifth of November 1960, he was performing at the Skyline club in Austin, Texas - the same club where Hank Williams made his final appearance before his death. Driving home to Shreveport on a foggy U.S. Highway 79, Horton was killed in a head-on collision that also took the life of his guitarist, Gerald Tomlinson. In a sad coincidence, Horton's widow, Billie Jean, had once been married to ... Hank Williams."

(4wks 29-23-25-30)
Six weeks at the top for the movie theme of the 1959 film, but it feels more a case of lack of strong opposition is still keeping it at the top. The four new entries come from a Lionel Bart penned track for an actor who later co-wrote "Goldfinger" and TV talent shows staple "Feeling Good" as well as getting married to Joan Collins; a US Country singer/songwriter; a 1942 jazz standard with music by Mercer Ellington and lyrics by Ted Persons performed by a much missed British comedian/TV presenter; and the "King of Skiffle" going music hall oh his UK chart-topper "comedy" single.

You've moved way ahead of me by now.
On 27th February we had the same two songs in our top 2 but reversed.
I see that whilst you charted Lonnie Donegan and Max Bygraves they only just about scraped in. In my chart those two are both going to perform a lot better...
Nice to see you chart Annette (Funicello) and on the same week you had Puppy Love as an entry, a song Paul Anka wrote about her. (I've seen it written that he wrote it for her, but she didn't sing it so I'd rather say he wrote it about her). She was indeed 17 at the time. At 45 she started suffering from Multiple Sclerosis and set up a charity for it. She died of it in 2013, actually the same date that Margaret Thatcher died. So one witch and one angel left our planet on the same day. She was 70 years old when she died and by this time was already a great grandmother. Her relationship with Paul Anka obviously didn't work out but he married first, 2 years later, and she married in 1965 for the first time.

Just ordered Billy Fury CD His Wondrous Story - The Complete Collection from Amazon! I know quite a few of his singles but Colette isn't familiar. If you like some of his hits then you can't go wrong with that collection. I own the earlier Dreamcoats & Petticoats Presents .... Billy Fury best of which contained 26 chart singles + 4 B-sides.

One of the things about The Browns was that their lead singer was (is) called Jim Ed Brown - and the central character in "The Three Bells" was called Jimmy Brown. The three Browns are all still alive, and at least Jim Ed is still performing.

"Three Steps To Heaven" was was written by Eddie Cochran and his brother Bob Cochran, and recorded in January 1960 with Buddy Holly's Crickets on instruments. On Saturday, April 16, 1960, at about 23:50, while on tour in the United Kingdom, 21-year-old Cochran was involved in a traffic accident in a taxi travelling through Chippenham, Wiltshire, on the A4, he died in hospital at 16:10 the following day. The traffic policeman who was first on the scene will appear later in my retro rewind charts; as will one 12 year old who went backstage to see Eddie and carried his guitar to a taxi who died in a similar fashion 17 years later. The track became the 2nd posthumous UK #1 hit (after Buddy Holly's "It Doesn't Matter Anymore"). The second new entry comes from a soul singer who had a similar untimely death aged 33, with a USA #12 & UK #27 hit which went on to be covered on a number of occasions; and was a UK #2 hit in 1986; The Crickets track only made UK #42, but became a much bigger hit when covered by Bobby Vee, and later Leo Sayer; Hank Ballard scored a USA #7 hit with their latest release, but a cover version of a previous B-side was soon going to become rather more lucrative for the R&B songwriter.

After The Crickets gave up killing off their singers, they teamed up with Bobby Vee and had a no. 1 EP. Exorcising the Spinal Tap Drummer Curse.
