- Originally written by the Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Battisti for La Ragazza 77, alias Ambra Borelli, in 1968 as "Il paradiso della vita" ("The paradise of the life"). It received an English translation and Shel Talmy's production for the Cardiff group resulted in a UK #1 pop hit.

At number one another new chart topper, and this one has a message which is timeless about tolerance of all creeds, colours, and sexuality.Nine new entries from:- Recorded a year earlier, as this electric piano rocker was John's submission for their spring 1968 single release (which ended up being "Lady Madonna" to the surprise of Paul, and anger of John, so he pulled the track allowing George's "Inner Light" to be the B-side. Even their stunt of performing this song, whilst the film crew were there to record the "live in the studio" video for Lady Madonna failed). Hence after setting up Apple Records this was the highlight of the unreleased tracks included on the Yellow Submarine OST which peaked at UK #3 & USA #2.
- Written by Scottish songwriters Bill Martin & Phil Coulter, this uptempo swinging sixties track produced by George Martin, and featuring Paul McCartney on bass guitar returned the Liverpool singer to the UK top 5 (UK #3), and it was also a sizeable international hit.
- This superior bubblegum swinging sixties track was co-written and produced by the Atlanta, Georgia born singer/songwriting and recorded featuring the Wrecking Crew in Los Angeles. A very big international hit peaking at #1 in the USA, UK, Canada, & Germany and several other countries, and #2 in Australia. As you well know Vic and Bob "Wouldn't Let It Lie..... They wouldn't let it lie"
- The Florida easy jazz pop listening rock band scored their biggest hit in their only country peaking at USA #2. It was written by Buddy Buie, J. R. Cobb and Emory Gordy, Jr.
- Originally sung by the German singer Manuela in 1967, the Dagenham born singer scored her eighth and final UK top ten hit with this UK #6 pop track which was a fairly large international hit.
- The younger brother of the 1960s pop star Eden Kane, and the elder brother of pop singer Clive Sarstedt scored an easy listening Francophile UK #1 & USA #70 with this name checking lengthy single.
- The 5:10 long swamp rock B-side of the single "Proud Mary" was written and produced by John Fogerty and taken from their second album Bayou Country.
- The alias of the Zombies singer Colin Blunstone got signed to Deram records after the band split due to management issues, and rerecorded his band's biggest hit as a late 1960s psychedelic folk dramatic pop rocker featuring Denny Laine on guitar, this "recover" peaked at UK #34.
- The Mississippi born soul singer scored her final USA top forty single (USA #26 (R&B #2)) with a song co-written by producer and lead singer of the Chi-Lites, Eugene Record.

A monster 12 new entries from:- The White Album cut written and sung by George Harrison, which features an uncredited Eric Clapton on guitar. In the Spring of 1969 it was released as the flipside of a McCartney cod reggae song which topped the charts in many territories where it was released outside of the UK, & North America.
- This much sampled psychedelic rock classic was written by keyboard player Rod Argent, it was taken from the group's 1968 album Odessey and Oracle. It became a belated USA #3, Canada #1 & Australia #4 hit nearly six months after the group had disbanded, but failed to trouble the UK charts on either of its two releases.
- Ohio born crooner Dino Paul Crocetti's UK #2 cover of the Glen Campbell 1968 Grammy Award winning song written by John Hartford.
- Paul McCartney's divisive cod reggae track was released as a single in many territories outside of the UK & North America, and despite it being culled from a four month old album it peaked inside the top ten of most, and topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Japan, & Switzerland. In 2004 it was voted as the worst Beatles song of all time (come on it is not as horrific as Mr Moonlight or Revolution #9). And is Gary Barlow's favourite Beatles song!
- Written by the group's Mike Settle, who had previously been in The New Christy Minstrels, this country pop track reached USA #19. 12 years later Dolly Parton had a country chart topper with a cover of it.
- This UK #6 & USA #37 string laden baroque pop ballad was written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb and featured Barry Gibb on lead vocals. It was the sole release from their Odessa album.
- Maintaining their new psychedelic soul vein with all five members interchanging vocal lines, it was written by Barratt Strong with producer Norman Whitfield and reached USA #6 (R&B #1) aided by the excellent Funk Brothers instrumentation.
- The USA #9 debut solo single by the former Temptation, this bittersweet soul ballad was written by producers Harvey Fuqua & Johnny Bristol, with Pam Sawyer and James Roach.
- The 18 year old's USA #39 & UK #14 soul rock hit (which he co-wrote), did not do as well as it should have done, mainly because as it climbed the charts DJ's flipped the single for its love song B-side.
- Written by Herman Kelley and Richard "Popcorn" Wylie, it was originally recorded by Luther Ingram in 1966, but failed to trouble the charts. This Chicago based R&B singer scored a USA #98 & UK #44 hit with this future Northern Soul classic.
- Alongside Strawberry Fields Forever, and Penny Lane, this celebratory psychedelic rocker written by George Harrison after he first took LSD was the other missing track from the Sgt Pepper's album sessions (Had those three tracks been included then surely Sgt Pepper would unquestionably be a better album than Revolver IMHO; and to this day Paul thought this should have been on their seminal 1967 album instead of Within You Without You). Originally recorded as a 8:21 cut it was edited down to 6:28 for it's belated appearance on the Yellow Submarine OST.
- The Leeds born singer's dramatic pop track reached UK #25, but was a top 10 hit across Europe including Germany #4.

Another retro rewind week with a glut of new entries:- The UK #3 & USA #56 hit written by songwriters Geoff Stephens and Tony Macaulay. This Ron Richards produced track was the Manchester group's first song to feature Liverpool born guitarist/harmony singer Terry Sylvester (formerly of the Swinging Blue Jeans) in the place of Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills & Nash (and Young)).
- This classic USA #4 (Country, & Easy Listening #1) & UK #14 was written by songwriter Jimmy Webb, and featured The Wrecking Crew on instrumentation. It also reached the top 5 in Canada, Australia & New Zealand.
- The soulful R&B song written by Muscle Shoals songwriters Eddie Hinton and Donnie Fritts for Mary O'Brien's Dusty In Memphis album. Culled as a single it failed to trouble the UK top 50, andonly reached USA #91. Since then it has been covered numerous times usually as a duet such as UB40 with Chrissie Hynde's UK #6 version from 1988. I'll let you decide whether or not it is a good thing that a cover version by Nicole Scherzinger & Lewis Hamilton remains unreleased.
- The pastoral folk pop title track of The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, which failed to trouble either the UK or USA singles chart when released on 7" with that album's Do You Remember Walter? as its B-side.
- The title track of the bubblegum group's 1969 album was written by Bobby Bloom, Ritchie Cordell, and Bo Gentry. It reached USA #5, and went to #1 in South Africa, #3 in Canada and #4 in Australia.
- The Los Angeles progressive rock group's big commercial hit peaked at USA #25. Written by their guitarist Randy California, it was taken from their second album The Family That Plays Together.
- This soulful arrangement of the The Band's hit penned by Robbie Robertson reached USA #19 (#3 R&B) for the Atlantic records artist.
- The London blue eyed soul group's 4th single release, with the lead vocal by Steve Ellis, was written by Phillip Goodhand-Tait and hit UK #16.
- The Wiltshire, England pop group's 12th of 14 top 40 hits. This Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley written and produced track made UK #23.
- The song with music by French composer Michel Legrand (originally under the title "Les moulins de mon cœur") and English lyrics written by Americans Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman was taken from the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair. After it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Oscar, it became a belated UK #8 hit for the English singer, actor, and Olympic skier who was the son of the Oscar winning actor Rex Harrison.
- The dramatic pop anti war song written by Bob Russell & Lorenzo Barcelata reached UK #25 for the American singer.
- Written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Marianne Faithfull, this 1969 recording produced by Mick Jagger, and featuring Ry Cooder on slide guitar and bass, Jack Nitzsche on piano and organ, and Charlie Watts on drums sadly failed to trouble the charts. Two years later the Rolling Stones "recovered" it for their Sticky Fingers album.

"Time Of The Season" is one of those songs that is so well-known and so played that most people think it was a substantial hit. Astounding to think it did not hit at all in the UK. Much better than "She's Not There". Was also a Cashbox no. 1 hit.

This energetic Northern Soul anthem reached USA #6 & UK #36.
- Written by Jerry Butler, with producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and originally released on his 1968 album The Ice Man Cometh, this became a USA #4 (R&B #1) soul anthem.

Nine more retro rewind new entries from:- The around the world #1 blues rock hit written by Paul McCartney. Originally McCartney satirised the "Rivers of Blood speech" by former British Cabinet minister Enoch Powell in a brief jam that has become known as the "Commonwealth Song" or "No Pakistanis" but despite John Lennon support, the other three & producer George Martin wisely decided that Paul should rewrite the lyrics to something more palatable. Hence this lyrical version about a transvestite named Jojo featuring with Billy Preston playing Fender Rhodes electric piano was released instead spending 6 weeks at #1 in the UK, and 5 weeks at #1 in the USA.
- Written by Ivy Jo Hunter and Beatrice Verdi. It was recorded in 1967 by The Isley Brothers appearing on the Soul on the Rocks album and released as a single that reached UK #5 charts on Motown records, after they had left the label.

- After two UK singles in a row to fail to trouble the (Top 50) charts, this was Ray Davies' deliberate attempt to write a hit single via a similar music hall style to earlier tracks such as "Dedicated Follower of Fashion". It was only partially successful peaking at UK #31, and their next two UK releases also failed to trouble the top 50.
- The soulful Dusty In Memphis album cut written by Brill Building songwriters Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil.
- The Washington DC, instrumental group returned with the instrumental cover of TV theme tune composed by Morton Stevens, which peaked at USA #4.
- The traditional pop & karaoke anthem with English lyrics written by Paul Anka and set to music based on the French song "Comme d'habitude" co-composed, co-written and performed in 1967 by Claude François, saw this long running track reach USA #27 & UK #5. The most memorable cover surely has to be Sid Vicious' punk version, and the less said of family relative Jon Bon Jovi's version at the Sinatra at 100 concert (Dec 6th 2015) the better (especially compared to the surprisingly hugely impressive version of "New York, New York" by Lady Gaga at the same tribute concert which followed it).
