The semi comic Talking Blues country tale by The Man In Black tops my Retro Rewind chart, elsewhere six new entries from:- The folk rock cover of the 1966 Fred Neil original was featured on the soundtrack of the film Midnight Cowboy, and peaked at USA #6 & UK #23, and topped the charts in Canada.
- This summery string laden soul anthem written & produced by Sly Stone reached USA #2. Sadly it failed to chart in the UK
(although Phil Collins clearly recalled it when writing "Misunderstanding")
- Written by the French songwriter and originally recorded as a duet with Brigitte Bardot, that recording remainded unreleased due to the French female sex goddess disliking its lyric context. Two years later he recorded it with his then London born actress lover, the version was released and promptly banned in most countries. This probably contributed to its success as it went on to top the UK charts, and going top three throughout Europe. In the USA where airplay was a significant factor in calculation the chart it peaked at USA #58.
- Taken from the album The Soft Parade, the guitarist Robby Krieger penned track was a relative failure reaching USA #64.
- The New York psychedelic hard rock band produced by Jeff Barry, reached USA #32 with their 4th single and only hit.
- The brand name used by Jerry Kasenetz's and Jeffrey Katz's Super K Productions to release the music of a number of different musicians and acts used a bubblegum rock recording co-written and sung by Graham Gouldman, and performed by all four musicians who would later make up 10cc to reach USA #86, although it charted higher in Australia & Canada.

I like Johnny Cash in general and Ring Of Fire reached #1 in my chart, but I always found A Boy Named Sue a bit too novelty (and until 2003 this was his only ever UK hit!).
I only really got introduced to "You Can't Always Get What You Want" when George Michael sampled it in 1990 on "Waiting For The Day" and then I heard them play on the radio. Possibly my favourite Rolling Stones song I know of. It will remain that way even if it isn't eligible for my retro-chart.

The self penned country rock crooner allegedly written about his then lover, Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick gives the American songwriting legend his third Retro Rewind chart topper. Otherwise, eleven new entries from:- Mississippi's country pop singer Roberta Lee Streeter's take on the Burt Bacharach & Hal David song, reached UK #1, as the USA made do with Dionne Warwick's version.
- Written by Holland–Dozier–Holland in 1966 and a USA hit for the Elgins. The former Motown group recorded this track early in 1967, where it remained unreleased until Motown wanted to release some material by the group to capitalise on their success after leaving the label. As a result this peaked at UK #13.
- Written by Jimmy Webb in 1965, and a hit two years later for Glen Campbell. The Stax soul singer/songwriter/musician/producer recorded an 18:30 soul version for his Hot Buttered Soul album, with a radio edit resulting in the track reaching USA #37.
- The proto-punk band from Ann Arbor, Michigan fronted by Iggy Pop (born James Newell Osterberg). This track appeared on the group's self titled debut album on Elektra records produced by John Cale. It was written by the group (Dave Alexander, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton and Iggy Pop).
- Another haunting self penned song from the debut album Five Leaves Left by the cult English folk singer/guitarist whom is far more well known today than during his lifetime.
- The Las Vegas pop vocal trio scored their final USA top 40 hit (#12), 8 years after their first hit. It was a sunshine pop easy listening cover of the classic 1965 Top 10 hit ballad originally recorded by Little Anthony & The Imperials.
- Taken from the second album "Sailor", Miller's self penned effort gave the guitarist and his band their maiden USA top 100 hit peaking at USA #94. Five years later after a USA #1 hit and a Best Of album release it would reach USA #49.
- This USA #82 Mike Nesmith written and produced country rock track was taken from the album The Monkees Present (their first without Peter Tork).
- The New Jersey jazz fusion outfit's debut release, hit the ground running with this funky USA #59 (R&B #19) instrumental hit, which was also the title track of their debut album.
- The British blues band's lesser known hit featured Stan Webb on guitar and vocal duties with this UK #29 hit released after Christine Perfect (nee McVie) had left the group.
- The Stax houseband's self penned USA #37 & UK #35 hit was another sleazy, greasy R&B fuelled instrumental.

Twelve new entries this week from:- Taken from the shortlived supergroup formed by Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood self titled transatlantic #1 album, comes Winwood's penned much covered folk rock track produced by Jimmy Miller.
- After the first sabbatical of The Shadows at the end of 1968, Hank Marvin teamed up with the group's former singer, for the guitarist's rather good pop rock composition which made UK #7.
- The one hit wonder rock band from Canada reached USA #18, after topping their native chart. However, they split early in 1970, with their singer & keyboardist William "Smitty" Smith going on to be a top session musician throughout the 1970s & 1980s. He died of a heart attack in 1997, aged 53.
- This slowed-down psychedelic soul cover of the 1967 Isley Brothers song written by producer Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong reached USA #7 (R&B #2).
- This 12:30 long slowed down funk revamp of the Bacharach & David standard taken from the album Hot Buttered Soul reached USA #30 in radio edit form.
- The Iceman from Chicago returned with this USA #20 (R&B #4) written by Jerry Butler with producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.
- Written and produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, this was a USA #18 (R&B #3) hit for the Chicago born soul singer/voice actor.
- The Houston, Texas sunshine pop group reached USA #22 with the cover of a Tommy James song. It's original B-side "(I Am) Superman" would be covered by REM in 1986.
- Written by Victor Millrose and Alan Bernstein, and produced by Dick Glasser this typical easy listening pop effort for the San Diego group reached USA #9.
- This brooding folk rock track was written by the Canadian songwriter/guitarist for his self titled debut solo album in 1968. The album was remixed and reissued a year later to take advantage of the relative success of his second album "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere". This, the stand out track from it was released as a single, but failed to trouble the USA top 100. Still it has been covered by many acts since, with the most notable covers being by David Bowie, The Pixies & Dinosaur Jr.
- The Big O's latest single failed to trouble the Billboard top 100 singles chart, and only reached UK #27, but it made #1 in Australia. This catchy novelty track became adopted as Glasgow Rangers FC anthem, which is somewhat ironic really considering what has happened to the club!
- Taken from the Canadian hard rock band's 4th album Monster, this John Kay, & Jerry Edmonton composition reached USA #31.

The legendary English folk group which at the time featured Richard Thompson top my Retro Rewind Chart with the late Sandy Denny's signature song. A number of the six new entries come through acts where the main artist is no longer with us:
- The opening song for the 1969 album David Bowie (later reissued in 1973 as Space Oddity). The Ivor Novello Award winning song is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut, and was released during a period of great interest in space flight. It was released at the time of the successful Apollo XI (11) mission to put a man on the moon. At the time this Gus Dudgeon produced track featuring Rick Wakeman on mellotron peaked at UK #5 & USA #124 and topped the French charts. In the USA it peaked at #15 in 1973. In the UK a 1975 reissue saw it hit #1. It's well known video was shot by photographer Mick Rock in December 1972.
- The song written and first recorded by American songwriter Mark James in 1968. Its producer Chips Moman later worked with the King of Rock'n'Roll and suggested he record the song. It was his final USA #1 hit single, and peaked at #2 in the UK.
- Written by Tony Romeo, the former early 1960s teen singer born Lugee Sacco famous for his falsetto vocals, scored his first sizeable hit in over three years ... it would also be his last. It reached USA #10 & UK #2 and featured backing vocals from early 1960s female USA pop singers Linda Scott, and Peggy Santiglia (The Angels).
- The rock band from Sydney, Australia disbanded in 1969 with this becoming a posthumous hit for them. Written and produced by the group's Harry Vanda & George Young, this proto AC\DC rock track peaked at #21 in Australia, & #100 in the USA. Vanda & Young would later produced John Paul Young's 1975 Australian #2 cover version of this track; whilst the Easybeats vocalist Stevie Wright passed away at the end of 2015.
- Written by the late Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Robert Hunter from the Sand Francisco psychedelic rock group and originally released on their 1969 studio album Aoxomoxoa, it was written about the last days and trial of the 1st century AD saint, Stephen, the first martyr of the New Testament of the Bible, who was stoned to death.
- The rock band from Louisville, Kentucky became one hit wonders with this garage/psychedelic sounding USA #21 hit.

- This heartfelt cover of the 1968 USA hit for Nina Simone written with Jimmy Webb, became a UK only release and peaked at #11.

- This cover of the 1968 Barbara Acklin USA hit (later revived by Swing Out Sister in 1992), saw Mary O'Brien go into the studio with producer Bill Landis and arranger Keith Mansfield. The result was her final UK hit of the 1960s limping to #43.
- Ray Davies epic single taken from the imminent 1969 concept album, Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) failed to chart in either the UK or the USA. However, it sarcastic lyrics were (deliberately?) misunderstood at the time (& less than two years later inspired a Beatle to not release an obvious commercial track for similar reasons) by the right wing owned red tops causing the song to be banned by the BBC, alas it was a rather clever song attacking the upper classes patronising attitude to the working class it failed to pick up any sales.
- The Canadian roots rock band's Robbie Robertson composed this song to tell of the last days of the American Civil War and the suffering of white Southerners. Taken from their second album (The Band), it was only released as a B-side, but became a USA top 5 hit in 1971 thanks to Joan Baez cover.
- The jazz musician went full one electric rock fusion with this one half (18:16 long) of his latest album In a Silent Way.
- The final of 13 USA top 40 hits. This USA #26 hit penned by Felix Cavaliere was as ever produced by Arif Mardin, saw the blue eyed soul group go back to their earlier beat orientated roots.
- As the original version of "Je T'aime ..." got banned, this opportunistic cover by the British group featuring Tim Mycroft on keyboard reached UK #18 and did receive radio airplay.

"Planet Earth Is Blue and There's Nothing I Can Do ..." One of the reasons for starting this whole exercise was the realization that a number of the key acts and artists featured were at the age when they could easily pass away in the near future ..... I never thought my musical hero would go before I got to his first hit, which his then producer and bassist Tony Visconti passed on due to its "novelty factor" coinciding with the moon landings... Eight more new entries this week from:- The British pop band from Warwickshire had no success in the UK, yet they got to USA #5 with this Tony Macaulay and Geoff Stephens pop composition. The band were formed out of the ashes of Pinkerton's Assorted Colours, and switched guitarist Tony Newman to lead vocal duties ahead of their original singer Sam Kempe who was still in the group alongside bassist Stuart Colman (more of him much later).
- The USA jazz rock group also decided it was a good idea to mine the Laura Nyro songbook, and the result was their cover of her 1966 composition reached USA #2.
- This suite of short songs written by Stephen Stills appeared on the folk rock supergroup trio's self titled album. Released in single edit form it peaked at USA #21. Stills wrote the song about his girlfriend, singer/songwriter Judy Collins.
- The Los Angeles based sunshine pop quartet reached USA #15 (R&B #3) with this Jerry Peters and Anita Poree soulful track.
- The Puerto Rican virtuoso guitarist & singer's take on the 1968 Bee Gees ballad, reached UK #25.
- The Detroit based soul group got their name because all four of their members had previously sung in other groups, as well as being background male vocalists for other Motown acts. This soul ballad written by Marvin Gaye and Anna Gordy Gaye, and produced by Marvin reached USA #12 (R&B #1).
- Taken from the Canadian Americana act's eponymous second album, this was released as a single and reached USA #25 & #10 in Canada.
- The seminal Jamaican rock steady (ska/reggae) group's top selling single in their own country from this year.

BST had some bad luck with their first three charting singles. "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Spinning Wheel" and "And When I Die" all got to no. 2 in Billboard and Record World - charts which they never topped. The first two peaked at 2 and 3 in Cashbox, but AWID made up for that by spending a week at no. 1.
No such problems in the album charts - their second and third albums were chart-toppers in all three charts. Their eponymous 2nd spent an entire year in the top 10.

Just look at the quality of the top ten of this chart and compare it to today .... there really is no comparison is there? Eleven new entries this week from:- George Harrison's ballad half of the latest Beatles single, this time culled from the Abbey Road album which helps explain why the double A sided single only reached UK #4. It topped the charts in USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, etc, and became The Beatles second most covered composition (behind McCartney's Yesterday).
- John Lennon's blues rock side of the latest Beatles single. During the recording of the single Lennon & McCartney had a bit of a falling out as Paul reckoned it was too close for comfort to Chuck Berry's 1956 single "You Can't Catch Me". On producer's George Martin's suggestion Lennon deliberately slowed the song down and McCartney added a heavy different melodic bass riff in order to make the song more original. However, in 1973 Chuck Berry's music publisher successfully sued John Lennon for copyright infringement because of the melodic similarity between the two songs.
- The Jamaican ska & reggae musician born James Chambers had his first international hit with this memorable reggae soul track which peaked at UK #6 & USA #25.
- The Dagenham, East London formed beat pop group reached UK #2 & USA #27 with the group's Alan Blakley & Len Hawkes composition.
- This USA #2 (R&B #3) Atlantic recording was written and recorded by R. B. Greaves, this soulful track had a latin flavour resplendent with a mariachi-style horn section, and tells the tale of a man who has learned of his wife's infidelity the night before, and dictates a letter of separation to Maria, his secretary.
- The (near) title track of the seminal progressive rock album, this was written by Ian McDonald & Peter Sinfield from the group who featured the lead vocals of bass guitarist Greg Lake, and contained lead guitarist Robert Fripp. It was released as a single but failed to chart.
- The title track of the posthumous retrospective double album released in the UK by Small Faces in 1969 on the Immediate label. This progressive psychedelic rock folk ballad was recorded in 1968 from their from their unfinished fourth LP 1862 album sessions, and featured Traffic's Chris Wood on flute.
- The opening track and second single from the influential proto-punk outfit from Michigan was produced by John Cale from their Elektra records debut album.
- This opportunistic beat pop cover of the Jackie DeShannon self penned big USA hit single, peaked in the UK at #31.
- This country rock cover of the 1942 folk song by Woody Guthrie about the sinking of the U.S. convoy escort, the Reuben James, which was the first U.S. naval ship sunk by German U-boats in World War II reached USA #26, but failed to chart in the UK.
- The Michigan based psychedelic pop band returned with this self penned USA #19 hit taken from their The Best of Tommy James and The Shondells LP.

"Something" was the only Beatles track Frank Sinatra ever recorded. And during his shows in the 1970s he introduced it as his "favourite Lennon/McCartney composition" which Ringo Starr found hilarious! Still in the same set of concerts he said some nasty things which would be completely unacceptable today about David Bowie rubbishing his attempt to write "My Way" (i.e. "Life On Mars"). Which greatly interested his former older rival Bing Crosby's manager (Phillip Crosby, his 4th eldest son), and enabled the booking of one of the most unlikeliest duets in music history for Bing's 1977 Xmas Special.

- John Fogerty's written and produced more radio friendly track chronicled the tale of the fictional band Willy and the Poor Boys, and how they play on street corners to cheer people up and ask for nickels.
- Written by John Denver in 1966, the New York folk trio's cover was recorded in 1967, but only after its use in a USA documentary on the Vietnam War, did the song become an anti-War anthem propelling the song to USA #1. 20 years later New Order released the single "Run 2" which resulted in John Denver taking successful legal action for some fairly obvious plagiarism.
- Originally recorded as Diana Ross' first solo single as Supremes members Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong do not sing on the recording. This Johnny Bristol, Jackey Beavers, and Harvey Fuqua composition became the trio's final single (with Ross in the group). It reached USA #1 & UK #13.
- Taken from the covers album Reviewing the Situation, the fifth original album by 1960s British girl singer. This Led Zeppelin cover became the first UK single release covering a Led Zeppelin song. (The album also contained the first release of Paul McCartney's Beatles outtake "Junk"). Despite being co-produced by Tony Visconti this very different sounding track for her failed to trouble the charts
- Randy Bachman's Dylanesque jazz pop rock song gave the Canadian rock group a USA #22 hit.
- The Georgia born country pop singer's USA #15 rock hit was written by Robert Nix and Billy Gilmore, and is full of barely disguised double entendre lyrics.

- Written by fellow Scot Jim Doris, this Muscle Shoals produced, Atlantic R&B soul recording gave the Scottish singer a USA #22 hit. Whilst it failed to trouble the UK top 40, it went top 30 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, & South Africa.
- The Norman Whitfield written and produced Motown recording reached USA #17. It was written about the 1947 U.S.-to-Europe or American Friendship Train which gave aid to post WWII Europe.
- The very different sounding Atlantic R&B soul cover of the Paul McCartney melodramatic song reached USA #17.
