I don't know if it's "inspired" by Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie. It's in a similar style with the girls vocals. But then Paul Evans "Seven Little Girls" is in a similar style and that one was a hit in my chart. (Of course Timmy Mallett covered that too).
I like this song (and 7 little girls) and not "itsy bitsy teeny weeny" because I think the lyrics of this song are funny, whereas those of "bikini" are just corny.
My festivals are holding me back now, I have 3 more scored up but not sure when I'll post them and whether I'll get to making a 1962 list this week - possibly for 3 more weeks.

-- ( -- ) Soul Twist - King Curtis & The Noble Knights -- ( -- ) The Jam - Part 1 - Bobby Gregg & His Friends -- ( -- ) Funny Way Of Laughin' - Burl Ives
Back with another "twist" song, we have Chubby Checker with Bobby Rydell. The two have performed together before when they had a go at "Jingle Bell Rock" a few months ago (and didn't reach my chart with it, although it reached the US top 30). This song was not a US hit but reached #45 in the UK chart, and thus far Bobby Rydell has had a #1 on this chart and Chubby Checker hasn't.
PT109 is a song about John F Kennedy's heroics in World War II fighting the Japanese. At the end of the song Jimmy Dean points out his name is John, the name of Jimmy Dean's previous hero too. Unfortunately, this "John" would meet his match just 1 year and 7 months later. He was, of course, the US president at this point.

28 April 1962:

-- ( 25 ) Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream) - Roy Orbison (#2[2]) -- ( 26 ) Wonderful Land - Shadows (#3) -- ( 28 ) Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares (#15) -- ( 30 ) Theme From Z Cars - Johnny Keating (#7)
-- ( -- ) Old Rivers - Walter Brennan -- ( -- ) Everybody Loves Me But You - Brenda Lee -- ( -- ) Ave Maria - Shirley Bassey
Paul Petersen remains at #1 and Chubby Checker challenges with a climb to #3, the peak position also for his two main "Twist" songs. Maybe he can do better this time?
Ray Charles has a big one coming up (in the current 1962 playlist) but sneaked in a smaller US hit first (wikipedia thinks this one was released later but it charted first). In any case he gets this week's highest entry.
Ernie Maresca has written other hits including "Runaround Sue" which is namechecked in this song, and both were hits in the early 80s, this one covered by Rocky Sharpe & The Replays in 1982.

5 May 1962:
1 ( 1 ) She Can't Find Her Keys - Paul Petersen < 4th week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) Teach Me To Twist - Chubby Checker & Bobby Rydell 3 ( 2 ) Nut Rocker - B Bumble & The Stingers (#2[3]) 4 ( 9 ) Hide Nor Hair - Ray Charles 5 ( 5 ) PT109 - Jimmy Dean 6 ( 8 ) Johnny Jingo - Hayley Mills 7 ( 13 ) Cutty Sark - John Barry Seven 8 ( 4 ) Speak To Me Pretty - Brenda Lee (#3) 9 ( 16 ) Big Man In A Big House - Leroy Van Dyke 10 ( 7 ) Ginny Come Lately - Brian Hyland (#7)
11 ( 6 ) It's All Over Now - Shane Fenton & The Fentones (#5) 12 ( -- ) As You Like It - Adam Faith 13 ( 19 ) Shout Shout (Knock Yourself Out) - Ernie Maresca 14 ( 14 ) Soldier Boy - Shirelles 15 ( 15 ) You Better Move On - Arthur Alexander 16 ( 20 ) King Of Clowns - Neil Sedaka 17 ( 12 ) Everybody's Twisting - Frank Sinatra (#9) 18 ( -- ) Uptown - Crystals 19 ( 11 ) Lover Please - Clyde McPhatter (#5) 20 ( 10 ) Good Luck Charm - Elvis Presley (#1[2])
21 ( -- ) Lonely City - John Leyton 22 ( 24 ) The Mexican - Fentones 23 ( 21 ) Twist Twist Senora - Gary U.S. Bonds (#21) 24 ( -- ) Let's Talk About Love - Helen Shapiro 25 ( -- ) Conscience - James Darren 26 ( 17 ) Theme From Maigret - Joe Loss (#10) 27 ( -- ) Last Night Was Made For Love - Billy Fury 28 ( 18 ) Hey! Little Girl - Del Shannon (#3) 29 ( 23 ) Shout Part I - Joey Dee & The Starliters (#20) 30 ( -- ) Caterina - Perry Como
-- ( 22 ) Brazilian Love Song - Nat King Cole (#6) -- ( 25 ) Jamie - Eddie Holland (#13) -- ( 26 ) When My Little Girl Is Smiling - Craig Douglas (#17) -- ( 27 ) Dear One - Larry Finnegan (#24) -- ( 28 ) You Win Again - Fats Domino (#21) -- ( 29 ) Twistin' The Night Away - Sam Cooke (#1[3]) -- ( 30 ) Love Letters - Ketty Lester (#8)
-- ( -- ) Tavern In The Town - Terry Lightfoot -- ( -- ) I Know Where I'm Going - Countrymen -- ( -- ) I Wish That We Were Married - Ronnie & The Hi-Lites
We are in a slightly "quiet" period which is letting Paul Petersen remain on top. Perhaps if I'd know what were coming I'd have kept Elvis at #1 for one more week but Paul Petersen was right near the end of his playlist and I don't look ahead.
This also allows Chubby Checker to get to #1 with his duet with Bobby Rydell, and one place higher than both his classic "twist" hits. We'll see if that or Ray Charles can get to #1 or whether Paul Peterson will make it a 5th week equalling the longest #1 of the year so far from the Everly Brothers.
Adam Faith gets the highest entry this week although it isn't that high. We're nearing the end of his career. The Crystals hit was written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, one of their first as a couple.
The highest of the non-entries, "Tavern In The Town" is the same tune as "Heads and shoulders knees and toes". The latter song apparently first appeared around 1961, but the origin is about 80 years old at this point.

12 May 1962:
1 ( 1 ) She Can't Find Her Keys - Paul Petersen < 5th week at #1 > 2 ( 4 ) Hide Nor Hair - Ray Charles 3 ( 2 ) Teach Me To Twist - Chubby Checker & Bobby Rydell (#2[1]) 4 ( 7 ) Cutty Sark - John Barry Seven 5 ( 3 ) Nut Rocker - B Bumble & The Stingers (#2[3]) 6 ( 12 ) As You Like It - Adam Faith 7 ( -- ) Come Outside - Mike Sarne & Wendy Richard 8 ( 6 ) Johnny Jingo - Hayley Mills (#6) 9 ( 5 ) PT109 - Jimmy Dean (#5) 10 ( 9 ) Big Man In A Big House - Leroy Van Dyke (#9)

21 ( 25 ) Conscience - James Darren 22 ( 11 ) It's All Over Now - Shane Fenton & The Fentones (#5) 23 ( -- ) The One Who Really Loves You - Mary Wells 24 ( 27 ) Last Night Was Made For Love - Billy Fury 25 ( -- ) Twistin' Matilda (And The Channel) - Jimmy Soul 26 ( 22 ) The Mexican - Fentones (#22) 27 ( 30 ) Caterina - Perry Como 28 ( 17 ) Everybody's Twisting - Frank Sinatra (#9) 29 ( 23 ) Twist Twist Senora - Gary U.S. Bonds (#21) 30 ( 19 ) Lover Please - Clyde McPhatter (#5)
-- ( 20 ) Good Luck Charm - Elvis Presley (#1[2]) -- ( 26 ) Theme From Maigret - Joe Loss (#10) -- ( 28 ) Hey! Little Girl - Del Shannon (#3) -- ( 29 ) Shout Part I - Joey Dee & The Starliters (#20)
-- ( -- ) I Sold My Heart To The Junkman - Bluebelles -- ( -- ) Lovers Who Wander - Dion -- ( -- ) Tell Me - Dick & DeeDee -- ( -- ) You Are Mine - Frankie Avalon -- ( -- ) I'm Looking Out The Window - Cliff Richard
Paul Petersen's cute song gets a 5th week at number one, although this week it was fairly close and in reality it's the lack of a bunch of strong songs that has kept that at #1. However Ray Charles's bluesy song may well give him his first number one, with his better known country ballad standard just around the corner.
The highest entry is also well known having been a UK #1, and featuring a future famous actress making comments and being subject of a rather bad cover version. I have pointed out before that this is in fact the only UK #1 to feature a female vocal at all in the whole of 1962 and 1963. (Helen Shapiro was the last near the end of 1961 and Cilla Black will be the next in early 1964).
The better known singer with the surname Richard (who is of course unrelated) gets the next highest entry. This was a double A-side with "I'm Looking Out The Window" both covers of late 1950s songs. Peggy Lee recorded the original of "I'm Looking Out The Window" and Bobby Freeman did "Do You Wanna Dance". (Do You Wanna Dance may have originally been intended as a B-side but got promoted to double-A status later).
Mary Wells enters the chart now. I'm more familiar of course with her 1964 hit "My Guy" and we'll be expecting that one to be a hit for her.
Twistin' Matilda adds the word "twist" to an old soul song that I knew better in Allan Sherman's parody. (The problem of being brought up as a child with Allan Sherman is I knew his versions before the originals. Recall that C'est Si Bon gave Conway Twitty his biggest hit so far (his only hit?) on this chart, made famous to me also through Allan Sherman's parody).

19 May 1962:
1 ( 2 ) Hide Nor Hair - Ray Charles < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) She Can't Find Her Keys - Paul Petersen (#1[5]) 3 ( 7 ) Come Outside - Mike Sarne & Wendy Richard 4 ( 4 ) Cutty Sark - John Barry Seven 5 ( -- ) A Picture Of You - Joe Brown 6 ( 6 ) As You Like It - Adam Faith 7 ( 3 ) Teach Me To Twist - Chubby Checker & Bobby Rydell (#2[1]) 8 ( 11 ) Uptown - Crystals 9 ( 5 ) Nut Rocker - B Bumble & The Stingers (#2[3]) 10 ( -- ) I Can't Stop Loving You - Ray Charles

21 ( -- ) You Know What I Mean - Vernons Girls 22 ( 19 ) Let's Talk About Love - Helen Shapiro (#19) 23 ( 25 ) Twistin' Matilda (And The Channel) - Jimmy Soul 24 ( 21 ) Conscience - James Darren (#21) 25 ( 14 ) Speak To Me Pretty - Brenda Lee (#3) 26 ( 24 ) Last Night Was Made For Love - Billy Fury (#24) 27 ( 18 ) Soldier Boy - Shirelles (#14) 28 ( 16 ) Ginny Come Lately - Brian Hyland (#7) 29 ( 27 ) Caterina - Perry Como (#27) 30 ( 20 ) You Better Move On - Arthur Alexander (#15)

-- ( -- ) Most People Get Married - Patti Page -- ( -- ) Green Leaves Of Summer - Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen -- ( -- ) Clown Shoes - Johnny Burnette -- ( -- ) Swinging In The Rain - Norman Vaughan
On this week, Ray Charles moves to the top whilst also getting the second highest entry with his more famous song but Joe Brown's high entry looks potentially set to upset the party, both by replacing him on top and denying him a second one.
Dave Brubeck's dance isn't square it's more heptagonal. He did 5 beats, now 7. This is one bar of 4 and one of 3. (The Stranglers would do 13 beats with 3 bars of 3 then one of 4 on Golden Brown).
In a week with a lot of songs only the Vernons Girls also manage to chart. Norman Vaughan's comic version of Singing In The Rain didn't cut it, among others.

As Joe Brown climbs to #1 with his UK #2 hit and "Come Outside" holds at #3, the song that kept Joe Brown out, the new entries come primarily from the US chart. Gene Pitney, Freddy Cannon and Johnny Tillotson all reached the UK top 5 with those entries. For the latter of those, it's his first entry in this chart since he got to #1 in 1960 with "Poetry In Motion".

Joe Brown stays at #1 with a different Ray Charles song behind him at #2 this week, and Elvis flies up to #3 looking for yet another number one. The highest new entry is a familiar tune used for a striptease act. In a week of few entries, we are introduced to another Motown girl-group the Marvelettes.

Thus we get yet another teen former-mouseketeer as the highest entry of the week.

-- ( -- ) When Love Comes Along - Matt Monro
For me, this period is really just waiting for something good to happen, and it will be on 7th July but that's still 3 weeks away. And then 2 will come in consecutive weeks. In the meantime Joe Brown gets a 4th week at number one.
That "English Country Garden" is the 2nd highest entry with a song that annoyed me intensely when I first heard it and still I am rather critical of it yet I probably charted it because it's considered some kind of classic. That is has so many wrong chords annoys me most. I mean, Vaughan Williams put in the chords that should be played and I've heard an instrumental version that sounds right, so why change them? Why is an American singing about English country gardens? What does he know? And what annoyed me as a child was that the question is "how many" not "name some...". The answer to "how many" should be a number, not a list. (Of course answering with a number would sound silly).
In any case it is the most memorable of all the songs that did enter my chart. (I can't even remember how the others go now). Obviously the song at #19 has nothing to do with the classic of 11 years later (was that part 2?)

-- ( -- ) Theme From Ben Casey - Valjean Johns -- ( -- ) I Love You - Volumes
8 new entries this week and a new #1. I find as we are now in the middle of 1962 that although the big change hasn't happened yet, there are some things that have changed in my approach. I am perhaps now more interested in songs that were new in 1962 than classic jazz songs revived, which may explain why Eydie Gorme has the lowest of the 8 entries (although she does break the chart) as her song was about 20 years old at the time, and was written by a Jack Lawrence, who was no relation to her husband Steve (both were Jewish though and both changed their names).
Johnny Crawford climbs to #1 and his version will deny Shane Fenton from charting the song that was, in the UK, his highest peaking single under that name, and he will therefore have to wait until he's called Alvin Stardust to break the chart again.
Similarly Ronnie Carroll won't chart with "Roses Are Red" nor will Carol Deene have any success with "Johnny Get Angry".

-- ( -- ) Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes) - Dee Dee Sharp -- ( -- ) Crazy Words Crazy Tune - Dorothy Provine -- ( -- ) Adios Amigo - Jim Reeves
As Johnny Crawford grabs a second week on top, we have a high entry from a singer who did a twee song in 1960 that failed to break my chart. Like that one, his new one was also covered to be a UK #1, but Sealed With A Kiss is a much better song and I always liked the original.
Dee Dee Sharp still can't break the chart, and Dorothy Provine's fun 20s throwback didn't make it really just because it was that rather than an original song. Jim Reeves, boring as ever, fails once more but did stay on the playlist the whole week this time. Even the big names that do chart are struggling a bit (e.g. Roy Orbison only just scraping in).
I'll do the sporting achievements before posting the next chart.

So as we are halfway through 1962, it's time to look at some of the sporting winners.
As usual we start with football, and something that could never happen nowadays. Ipswich Town, managed by Alf Ramsey, won the football league. Last year's double winners Tottenham Hotspur just dropped too many points and later in the season had a lot of fixtures and came 3rd but they did retain the FA Cup. The bit Paddy won't want to see - Norwich City won the league cup. So a good year for East Anglia. The Scottish league was won by Dundee with Rangers winning both the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup.
1962 was of course a world cup year, and who else but Brazil could possibly win it? It was hosted by Chile and Brazil beat Czechoslovakia in the final.
At Wimbledon, in tennis, it was more success for Rod Laver, while Karen Susman won the women's singles.
Over in the USA, the Super Bowl was won by the Green Bay Packers, defeating the New York Giants. New York did have the winning baseball team that year though as the Yankees beat the San Francisco Giants in the final. (So both teams called the Giants finished as runners up).

-- ( -- ) Little Bitty Pretty One - Clyde McPhatter -- ( -- ) Tears Danny Williams -- ( -- ) I'm Just A Baby Louise Cordet -- ( -- ) Johnny Loves Me Shelley Fabares
Neil Sedaka was #1 in the first retro chart at the start of January 1960 and now gets his second number one. As this one enters at the top it means that he has yet to climb to #1. His single "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen" also spent 4 weeks at #2.
In what is the best week for new singles for a while, we also get a classic comic tale about some workmen that inspired the name of a certain early 90s band, another song covered by Showaddywaddy, a song that got ripped off by Elton John, and a yodelling cover of an early 1940s song that would top the UK chart for 7 weeks (keeping out the one that entered just above it here).
Lower down, Ken 1-2-3 Barry and his Dovells continue to put Bristol on the map - Bristol in Pennsylvania, that is. Clyde McPhatter misses out (and might have charted that if it had been a week or two earlier).

14 July 1962:
1 ( 1 ) Breaking Up Is Hard To Do - Neil Sedaka < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Sealed With A Kiss - Brian Hyland 3 ( 6 ) Right Said Fred - Bernard Cribbins 4 ( 9 ) Dancin' Party - Chubby Checker 5 ( 10 ) Speedy Gonzales - Pat Boone 6 ( 12 ) I Remember You - Frank Ifield 7 ( 5 ) Here Comes That Feeling - Brenda Lee (#5) 8 ( 3 ) Cindy's Birthday - Johnny Crawford (#1[2]) 9 ( -- ) Twist And Shout - Isley Brothers 10 ( 4 ) Orange Blossom Special - Spotnicks (#2[1])
11 ( 11 ) Our Favourite Melodies - Craig Douglas 12 ( 8 ) English Country Garden - Jimmy Rodgers (#5) 13 ( 7 ) The Stripper - David Rose (#2[2]) 14 ( 13 ) Don't Ever Change - Crickets (#12) 15 ( -- ) Ahab The Arab - Ray Stevens 16 ( 28 ) Bristol Twistin' Annie - Dovells 17 ( 16 ) The Wah-Watusi - Orlons (#13) 18 ( 17 ) Roses Are Red (My Love) - Bobby Vinton (#14) 19 ( 15 ) Walk On The Wild Side (Part 1 ) - Jimmy Smith (#10) 20 ( 24 ) The Crowd - Roy Orbison
21 ( 14 ) Theme From Dr Kildare (Three Stars Will Shine Tonight) - Richard Chamberlain (#5) 22 ( 22 ) I'll Never Dance Again - Bobby Rydell 23 ( 20 ) Wolverton Mountain - Claude King (#17) 24 ( 25 ) Johnny Get Angry - Joanie Sommers (#24) 25 ( 23 ) Having A Party - Sam Cooke (#20) 26 ( 19 ) Ain't That Funny - Jimmy Justice (#10) 27 ( 18 ) That's Old Fashioned (That's The Way Love Should Be) - Everly Brothers (#7) 28 ( -- ) (Girls Girls Girls) Made To Love - Eddie Hodges 29 ( 27 ) Yes My Darling Daughter - Eydie Gorme (#26) 30 ( -- ) I Need Your Loving - Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford
-- ( 21 ) A Picture Of You - Joe Brown (#1[4]) -- ( 26 ) The Man Who Shot Liberty Vance - Gene Pitney (#5) -- ( 29 ) Snap Your Fingers - Joe Henderson (#17) -- ( 30 ) Palisades Park - Freddy Cannon (#10)
-- ( -- ) Little Miss Lonely - Helen Shapiro
As Neil Sedaka takes a second week on top with others of last weeks entries climbing up, we get the highest new entry at #9 being a classic song. Although the Isley Brothers wrote most of their own songs, they didn't write this one and it isn't the original version, that being by the Top Notes. Bert "Russell" Berns was one of the composers, and he also wrote or co-wrote a few other standards (including two of Van Morrison's most famous songs). Can anyone here actually remember that "Twist And Shout" did actually get to #1 in the UK in one version and who recorded it? (Not one of the most memorable #1s in my opinion).
You'll probably recall Ray Stevens got to #1 in the UK 12 years later with "The Streak" and that in many of his songs he's a comedian (although he does some "straight" singing too). Ahab The Arab is one of those "comic" songs and is the one that made him originally famous.
Eddie Hodges enters behind the Isley Brothers who had written and recorded the original of his biggest hit.
One other entry for Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford, thanks mostly to there being few new ones this week and a lot waiting to drop out, as it didn't get that high a score, but Helen Shapiro is losing form and fails to chart anyway.

The influx of better music hits us this week with a classic pop song followed by two classic "swing" songs (who said it was dead?), and one of two (different) songs on the playlist called "Welcome Home Baby" - the other will follow soon. Gary US Bonds gets the final entry as there is no room this time around for Billy Fury.
