17 November 1962:

A second week at #1 for Elvis and I miscalculated because it was the 4th hit this year to reach NM and UK #1, with Elvis having had 3 of them and Cliff Richard the other one. Elvis Presley had 4 UK #1s in 1962 but in my chart "She's Not You" didn't reach #1.
This is the week in which I "lap" again as I pass the current date, i.e. 12th November of posting. Next time I do that I will already be in 1964. (The aim was to cover 4 retro years per current year and to do that I will have to complete 1963 by the first week of February. As I do about 5 charts a week I should just about achieve that).

24 November 1962:
1 ( 1 ) Return To Sender - Elvis Presley < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) The James Bond Theme - John Barry 3 ( 3 ) Workin' For The Man - Roy Orbison 4 ( 4 ) Bobby's Girl - Marcie Blane 5 ( 7 ) Don't Hang Up - Orlons 6 ( 13 ) The Main Attraction - Pat Boone 7 ( 9 ) Dance With The Guitar Man - Duane Eddy 8 ( 17 ) The Lonely Bull - Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass 9 ( 6 ) Big Girls Don't Cry - Four Seasons (#4) 10 ( 5 ) Monster Mash - Bobby Boris Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers (#1[2])
11 ( 14 ) Ride! - Dee Dee Sharp 12 ( 8 ) James (Hold The Ladder Steady) - Sue Thompson (#7) 13 ( -- ) Rumors - Johnny Crawford 14 ( 11 ) Lovesick Blues - Frank Ifield (#11) 15 ( 12 ) Sun Arise - Rolf Harris (#12) 16 ( 21 ) We're Gonna Go Fishin' - Hank Locklin 17 ( 10 ) Love Me Do - Beatles (#2[1]) 18 ( 22 ) Can Can 62 - Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers 19 ( 27 ) It Only Took A Minute - Joe Brown 20 ( 18 ) Desafinado - Stan Getz & Charlie Boyd (#18)
21 ( 29 ) Leah - Roy Orbison 22 ( 15 ) Limbo Rock - Chubby Checker (#6) 23 ( 30 ) That Stranger Used To Be My Girl - Trade Martin 24 ( -- ) I'm Gonna Change Everything - Jim Reeves 25 ( 16 ) All Alone Am I - Brenda Lee (#4) 26 ( 20 ) Because Of Love - Billy Fury (#17) 27 ( 19 ) Next Door To An Angel - Neil Sedaka (#12) 28 ( 23 ) Little Black Book - Jimmy Dean (#20) 29 ( 25 ) Must Be Madison - Joe Loss (#23) 30 ( -- ) Release Me - Esther Phillips
-- ( 24 ) No One Can Make My Sunshine Smile - Everly Brothers (#18) -- ( 26 ) King Of The Whole Wide World - Elvis Presley (#8) -- ( 28 ) The Cha-Cha-Cha - Bobby Rydell (#23)
-- ( -- ) Keep Your Hands Off My Baby - Little Eva -- ( -- ) I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You) - Johnny Tillotson
Another not-so-strong week sees no change in the top 4 and not much in the way of entries. Johnny Crawford gets his 3rd hit of the year, his first having reached #1 and at least his follow-ups are better than Little Eva who fails to chart with hers, and a certain other teen-star who set the chart alight a few months back will be struggling with his December follow-up (even though it did better in the US than his NM #1).
Jim Reeves rarely charts but made it in this time, while Esther Phillips gets in with a song that years later would upset the Beatles' run. 4 years and a few months may still be "too soon" so it might not be considered. (I was going to set it at 7 years, may go for 6 years which would allow the Mamas & Papas version of "Dedicated To The One I Love" to chart as that is 6 years on from the Shirelles version). Note that if the versions are very different I will allow it anyway, and we have such a case in December.
The last 5 weeks which make up December have all been scored up, and there are 6 stand-out songs in that month and a load of very ordinary stuff with a few medium quality ones in between but really the top 6 stand out from the crowd.

1 December 1962:
1 ( 1 ) Return To Sender - Elvis Presley < 4th week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) The James Bond Theme - John Barry 3 ( 3 ) Workin' For The Man - Roy Orbison 4 ( 4 ) Bobby's Girl - Marcie Blane 5 ( 5 ) Don't Hang Up - Orlons 6 ( 6 ) The Main Attraction - Pat Boone 7 ( 8 ) The Lonely Bull - Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass 8 ( 13 ) Rumors - Johnny Crawford 9 ( 7 ) Dance With The Guitar Man - Duane Eddy (#7) 10 ( -- ) Like I Do - Maureen Evans
11 ( 11 ) Ride! - Dee Dee Sharp 12 ( -- ) Eso Beso (That Kiss) - Paul Anka 13 ( 9 ) Big Girls Don't Cry - Four Seasons (#4) 14 ( 16 ) We're Gonna Go Fishin' - Hank Locklin 15 ( -- ) Wiggle Wobble - Les Cooper & The Soul Rockers 16 ( 19 ) It Only Took A Minute - Joe Brown 17 ( 24 ) I'm Gonna Change Everything - Jim Reeves 18 ( 18 ) Can Can 62 - Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers 19 ( 10 ) Monster Mash - Bobby Boris Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers (#1[2]) 20 ( 21 ) Leah - Roy Orbison
21 ( 12 ) James (Hold The Ladder Steady) - Sue Thompson (#7) 22 ( 14 ) Lovesick Blues - Frank Ifield (#11) 23 ( 23 ) That Stranger Used To Be My Girl - Trade Martin 24 ( 15 ) Sun Arise - Rolf Harris (#12) 25 ( -- ) Heartaches - Patsy Cline 26 ( 30 ) Release Me - Esther Phillips 27 ( -- ) Baby Face - Bobby Darin 28 ( 20 ) Desafinado - Stan Getz & Charlie Boyd (#18) 29 ( 17 ) Love Me Do - Beatles (#2[1]) 30 ( 22 ) Limbo Rock - Chubby Checker (#6)
-- ( 25 ) All Alone Am I - Brenda Lee (#4) -- ( 26 ) Because Of Love - Billy Fury (#17) -- ( 27 ) Next Door To An Angel - Neil Sedaka (#12) -- ( 28 ) Little Black Book - Jimmy Dean (#20) -- ( 29 ) Must Be Madison - Joe Loss (#23)
-- ( -- ) Dear Lonely Hearts - Nat King Cole -- ( -- ) Love Came To Me - Dion -- ( -- ) Always You And Me - Russ Conway
The top end of the chart is stagnant. We'll see if something can break it all up next week.
The highest entry was a US release for Nancy Sinatra but failed to chart, and Teresa Brewer has a go at it in the USA and flops too. However Ponchielli's "Dance Of The Hours" will produce one big US hit not too far off, and this song isn't going to stop it having a go on this chart too...
Much further down, Patsy Cline's "Heartaches" charts, even though the Marcels had a hit with that song in 1961. The versions were quite different, the Marcels doing it doo-wop style (a bit like they did Blue Moon) whilst Patsy Cline of course does it country. She has just 3 months left to live..

8 December 1962:
1 ( -- ) Bachelor Boy - Cliff Richard < 2nd #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Return To Sender - Elvis Presley (#1[4]) 3 ( 2 ) The James Bond Theme - John Barry (#2[3]) 4 ( 10 ) Like I Do - Maureen Evans 5 ( 3 ) Workin' For The Man - Roy Orbison (#3) 6 ( 4 ) Bobby's Girl - Marcie Blane (#4) 7 ( 12 ) Eso Beso (That Kiss) - Paul Anka 8 ( 8 ) Rumors - Johnny Crawford 9 ( 5 ) Don't Hang Up - Orlons (#5) 10 ( 6 ) The Main Attraction - Pat Boone (#6)
11 ( 7 ) The Lonely Bull - Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass (#7) 12 ( 15 ) Wiggle Wobble - Les Cooper & The Soul Rockers 13 ( -- ) Chains - Cookies 14 ( 9 ) Dance With The Guitar Man - Duane Eddy (#7) 15 ( 11 ) Ride! - Dee Dee Sharp (#11) 16 ( 17 ) I'm Gonna Change Everything - Jim Reeves 17 ( 14 ) We're Gonna Go Fishin' - Hank Locklin (#14) 18 ( 16 ) It Only Took A Minute - Joe Brown (#16) 19 ( 25 ) Heartaches - Patsy Cline 20 ( -- ) Let's Go (Pony) - Routers
21 ( -- ) Go Away Little Girl - Steve Lawrence 22 ( 13 ) Big Girls Don't Cry - Four Seasons (#4) 23 ( 27 ) Baby Face - Bobby Darin 24 ( 18 ) Can Can 62 - Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers (#18) 25 ( 20 ) Leah - Roy Orbison (#20) 26 ( 26 ) Release Me - Esther Phillips 27 ( -- ) Susie Darlin' - Tommy Roe 28 ( 23 ) That Stranger Used To Be My Girl - Trade Martin (#23) 29 ( 19 ) Monster Mash - Bobby Boris Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers (#1[2]) 30 ( 22 ) Lovesick Blues - Frank Ifield (#11)
-- ( 21 ) James (Hold The Ladder Steady) - Sue Thompson (#7) -- ( 24 ) Sun Arise - Rolf Harris (#12) -- ( 28 ) Desafinado - Stan Getz & Charlie Boyd (#18) -- ( 29 ) Love Me Do - Beatles (#2[1]) -- ( 30 ) Limbo Rock - Chubby Checker (#6)
-- ( -- ) Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah - Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans -- ( -- ) You Are My Sunshine - Ray Charles -- ( -- ) Hotel Happiness - Brook Benton -- ( ) The Next Time - Cliff Richard
For the second time within a year, Cliff Richard gets to #1 and knocks Elvis Presley off the top to get there. This time he enters the chart at #1, helped by the fact that the chart has been stagnant for a while. It's a double A-side with "The Next Time", and thus the latter cannot chart separately as it's a UK only hit. In actual fact "The Next Time" came in 10th over the 5 weeks and 4th on this particular week.
Two unusual interpretations of classics fail to get in, "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah", a slowed-down Phil Spector arrangement of an old song and "You Are My Sunshine" given an R&B feel to it. Brook Benton also fails to enter with what was one of his bigger US hits, peaking over there at #3.
Among those who enter, the Cookies are a girl group who had just one week at #50 in the UK chart, but actually appeared in a lot more hits as backing singers, including Neil Sedaka's big hit this year "Breakin' Up Is Hard To Do" and Ray Charles's big hit "Hit The Road Jack" last year.

"Love Me Do" is not # 1. Will you have so much Beatles at # 1 as the neighbour's chart have ?

Think that's fair enough. "Love Me Do" is not that great a track. It's what it stood for that's important - a British group writing their own material.

I have to be fairly subjective. It can't get to #1 because of what they did later. Kept out in my chart though by the Monster Mash... well that's a classic too.
Please Please Me is on my current playlist. Competing on its same week is "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers, and "Walk Like A Man" by the Four Seasons is on this playlist too, although that's 2 weeks earlier. Dionne Warwick's classic "Don't Make Me Over" is one week before Please Please Me.
I'm pretty certain though that the Beatles will have quite a few number ones, but it won't be automatic.

15 December 1962:
1 ( 1 ) Bachelor Boy - Cliff Richard < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 4 ) Like I Do - Maureen Evans 3 ( 2 ) Return To Sender - Elvis Presley (#1[4]) 4 ( 3 ) The James Bond Theme - John Barry (#2[3]) 5 ( 7 ) Eso Beso (That Kiss) - Paul Anka 6 ( 13 ) Chains - Cookies 7 ( -- ) Dance On! - Shadows 8 ( 5 ) Workin' For The Man - Roy Orbison (#3) 9 ( 8 ) Rumors - Johnny Crawford (#8) 10 ( 6 ) Bobby's Girl - Marcie Blane (#4)
11 ( 12 ) Wiggle Wobble - Les Cooper & The Soul Rockers 12 ( 20 ) Let's Go (Pony) - Routers 13 ( -- ) Gossip Calypso - Bernard Cribbins 14 ( 21 ) Go Away Little Girl - Steve Lawrence 15 ( 9 ) Don't Hang Up - Orlons (#5) 16 ( 10 ) The Main Attraction - Pat Boone (#6) 17 ( 19 ) Heartaches - Patsy Cline 18 ( 11 ) The Lonely Bull - Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass (#7) 19 ( 16 ) I'm Gonna Change Everything - Jim Reeves (#16) 20 ( 27 ) Susie Darlin' - Tommy Roe
21 ( 15 ) Ride! - Dee Dee Sharp (#11) 22 ( 14 ) Dance With The Guitar Man - Duane Eddy (#7) 23 ( -- ) Ruby Ann - Marty Robbins 24 ( 23 ) Baby Face - Bobby Darin (#23) 25 ( 17 ) We're Gonna Go Fishin' - Hank Locklin (#14) 26 ( 18 ) It Only Took A Minute - Joe Brown (#16) 27 ( -- ) Island Of Dreams - Springfields 28 ( 26 ) Release Me - Esther Phillips (#26) 29 ( -- ) Baby Take A Bow - Adam Faith 30 ( -- ) The Push And Kick - Mark Valentino
-- ( 22 ) Big Girls Don't Cry - Four Seasons (#4) -- ( 24 ) Can Can 62 - Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers (#18) -- ( 25 ) Leah - Roy Orbison (#20) -- ( 28 ) That Stranger Used To Be My Girl - Trade Martin (#23) -- ( 29 ) Monster Mash - Bobby Boris Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers (#1[2]) -- ( 30 ) Lovesick Blues - Frank Ifield (#11)
-- ( -- ) Me And My Shadow - Frank Sinatra & Sammy Davis Jr -- ( -- ) Your Cheating Heart - Ray Charles
Cliff Richard gets a second week on top, considerably ahead of Maureen Evans who was not one of the leading 6 I mentioned. (She was 7th though). The Shadows were among that leading 6 with their instrumental "Dance On!" which in the UK chart knocked Cliff off the top, a song on which they also perform.
Next week will be Christmas week and there are no Christmas songs in the chart at present. Brenda Lee's "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree" was in the UK top 10, and had I waited I could have given it a longer chart run. However I charted it in 1960 and it entered at #1 staying on top 2 weeks. One of this week's entrants, Adam Faith, was in the chart back then too with Lonely Pup (In A Christmas Shop). That peaked at #9.
The Monster Mash falls out this week but he has a follow-up "Monster's Holiday" which is identical to this on other than the lyrics, which are Christmas-based. Had I never heard of Monster Mash I might have taken to it, but of course, when you put out two songs that are almost exactly the same, people will always go for the first one.
Anyway, there are 2 weeks left and 4 big ones to come in them.

22 December 1962:
1 ( 1 ) Bachelor Boy - Cliff Richard < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 7 ) Dance On! - Shadows 3 ( 2 ) Like I Do - Maureen Evans (#2[1]) 4 ( -- ) I'm Gonna Be Warm This Winter - Connie Francis 5 ( 6 ) Chains - Cookies 6 ( 5 ) Eso Beso (That Kiss) - Paul Anka (#5) 7 ( 3 ) Return To Sender - Elvis Presley (#1[4]) 8 ( 13 ) Gossip Calypso - Bernard Cribbins 9 ( 4 ) The James Bond Theme - John Barry (#2[3]) 10 ( -- ) Tell Him - Exciters
11 ( 12 ) Let's Go (Pony) - Routers 12 ( 14 ) Go Away Little Girl - Steve Lawrence 13 ( 11 ) Wiggle Wobble - Les Cooper & The Soul Rockers (#11) 14 ( 9 ) Rumors - Johnny Crawford (#8) 15 ( 8 ) Workin' For The Man - Roy Orbison (#3) 16 ( 23 ) Ruby Ann - Marty Robbins 17 ( 10 ) Bobby's Girl - Marcie Blane (#4) 18 ( 20 ) Susie Darlin' - Tommy Roe 19 ( 17 ) Heartaches - Patsy Cline (#17) 20 ( 27 ) Island Of Dreams - Springfields
21 ( -- ) Pepino The Italian Mouse - Lou Monte 22 ( 29 ) Baby Take A Bow - Adam Faith 23 ( 15 ) Don't Hang Up - Orlons (#5) 24 ( 30 ) The Push And Kick - Mark Valentino 25 ( 16 ) The Main Attraction - Pat Boone (#6) 26 ( 19 ) I'm Gonna Change Everything - Jim Reeves (#16) 27 ( 18 ) The Lonely Bull - Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass (#7) 28 ( 24 ) Baby Face - Bobby Darin (#23) 29 ( -- ) Two Lovers - Mary Wells 30 ( 21 ) Ride! - Dee Dee Sharp (#11)
-- ( 22 ) Dance With The Guitar Man - Duane Eddy (#7) -- ( 25 ) We're Gonna Go Fishin' - Hank Locklin (#14) -- ( 26 ) It Only Took A Minute - Joe Brown (#16) -- ( 28 ) Release Me - Esther Phillips (#26)
-- ( -- ) Everybody Loves A Lover - Shirelles -- ( -- ) My Dad - Paul Petersen
We've reached the Christmas chart of 1962 and Cliff Richard is #1 together with the Shadows, and they are also #2. There are no actual Christmas songs this week (although 2 show up next week, and may or may not chart), but the closest we get is a seasonal song that only just scraped into the UK chart and was better known for a cover version 46 years later. Connie Francis also had the only proper Christmas hit in 1961. She's released a lot of singles since the start of 1960, many of which have flopped but has also managed a few in the top 5, but this looks potentially set to be her biggest.
The second highest entry has also hit the UK chart as a cover version. A group called Hello had the biggest UK hit version of "Tell Him" peaking at #6 in 1974. Quentin & Ash (from Men Behaving Badly) had a hit version in 1996, peaking at #25. (The original version by the Exciters managed just one week in the UK top 50, at #46).
The only other sort-of seasonal hit is a silly novelty song by Lou Monte. Not actually Christmas related but it does bring up this kind of thing.
Mary Wells scrapes in with her tale of her two lovers. Not so good this time for the Shirelles who had a #1 just under 2 years ago, and the more successful in the USA follow-up by Paul Petersen who had a huge #1 on this chart in April but this is just dreadful.

When that came out in 1996 I was aware of Hello's version but not sure I knew about the Exciters' original.
The Exciters' version got to #46 in the UK chart and Connie Francis only #48... why did they do so poorly?

The final chart of 1962:
29 December 1962:

21 ( 22 ) Baby Take A Bow - Adam Faith 22 ( 14 ) Rumors - Johnny Crawford (#8) 23 ( 24 ) The Push And Kick - Mark Valentino 24 ( 29 ) Two Lovers - Mary Wells 25 ( 19 ) Heartaches - Patsy Cline (#17) 26 ( 15 ) Workin' For The Man - Roy Orbison (#3) 27 ( 17 ) Bobby's Girl - Marcie Blane (#4) 28 ( -- ) It's Up To You - Rick Nelson 29 ( 23 ) Don't Hang Up - Orlons (#5) 30 ( 28 ) Baby Face - Bobby Darin (#23)

-- ( -- ) Monster's Holiday - Bobby Boris Pickett & The Crypt Kickers
According to my normal practice, the "Christmas" chart is one dated the last Saturday up to and including 25 December, so that was the previous chart and Cliff Richard had my Christmas #1 of 1962.
Connie Francis has, however, now achieved a #1. She has actually had the 2nd highest number of songs on my playlist during these 3 years, 19 of them, and only one behind Elvis Presley who leads with 20. Next comes Brenda Lee (17), Adam Faith (17), Cliff Richard (16), Bobby Darin (15), Everly Brothers (15), Duane Eddy (14). (Brook Benton has also had 14 including the 2 with Dinah Washington). My guess is that Connie Francis has had the largest number of flops of any artist too, i.e. songs on my playlist that didn't chart, however she has had a few hits too. (From that list, everyone has had a #1 except Adam Faith, biggest hit "As You Like It", #6, and Brook Benton whose biggest hit was "A Rockin' Good Way" with Dinah Washington, #2, and solo hit "Shadrack", #3).
If you add the Shadows (10) to that of Cliff Richard (16) they've had 26, more songs than any other (even Elvis). (Note these are counts of songs on my playlist, not hits, and some where double A-sides played separately). They remain at #2 this week while Cliff drops to #3.
Bobby Vee's previous biggest hit "How Many Tears" and also its follow-up "Take Good Care Of My Baby" were both written by Carole King & Gerry Goffin. This one isn't but the second highest entry "Up On The Roof" was. (Bobby Vee's hit Rubber Ball was actually written by Gene Pitney).
I mentioned that there were 6 big ones in this month and they were the current top 5 plus the Drifters who enter in the top 10 this week.
The Four Seasons chart with a seasonal song. It obviously won't stay in the chart long and will no doubt not even climb beyond its entry position, such is the nature of Christmas songs. They do however have "Walk Like A Man" on my first 1963 playlist. "Walk Like An Egyptian" didn't get to #1 in my chart but "Walk Like A Panther" did. Divine's camp cover of that song wasn't an NM hit.
The US chart is listing the next artist as Rick Nelson, not Ricky. The only one that fails to enter is a rather charming but too much like his previous hit track by Bobby "Boris" Pickett. I'm not sure we'll hear from him again. We may hear from Wilson but he isn't related.
The next chart will appear in a brand new topic. I will however be listing the top 100 singles of 1962 below.

Most possible Connie Francis will have the most number of singles in my 60s charts.
I'm always glad to see Christmas or winter related song at # 1 on the Christmas / New Year.
On this moment I know all my Christmas # 1s from 1963 (Dora Bryan - All I Want For Christmas Is A Beatle) to 2013 (Spencer and Natalie Powers - Merry Christmas). In the end of this December I can create a special thread with all my favourite Xmas songs and all another personal # 1s on Christmas week.
At # 17 I found "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", is it the same song with this my # 1 ?

If I'd started my chart in 1958, Connie Francis may have had more number ones.
And yes, are there any other songs with that title? Bjorn Again making it sound like Waterloo. I will still go for Bruce Springsteen's version as one of the greatest ever covers.

15 more, the positions 25 to 11:
25 Love Me Do - Beatles 24 Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream) - Roy Orbison 23 Workin' For The Man - Roy Orbison 22 The Stripper - David Rose 21 Good Luck Charm - Elvis Presley 20 Hey! Baby - Bruce Channel 19 Telstar - Tornados *18 Rock-A-Hula Baby - Elvis Presley 17 Cindy's Birthday - Johnny Crawford 16 Do You Love Me - Contours 15 Hide Nor Hair - Ray Charles 14 Make It Easy On Yourself - Jerry Butler 13 Things - Bobby Darin **12 The James Bond Theme - John Barry 11 The Young Ones - Cliff Richard
Adding in the extra week on either side moves both Elvis and John Barry up 3 places (even though Elvis's week was a #5 and John Barry's at #25, the fact is that John Barry is very closely placed to the 3 above it without that week).
John Barry moving to #9 would make it the biggest hit that didn't reach #1, as the one that's #9 now holds that.
