Why you didn't include "All Kinds Of Everything" ?
It's my favourite UK # 1 of the 70s, all-time favourite Eurovision winner and favourite song from 1970 year.

Why you didn't include "All Kinds Of Everything" ? It's my favourite UK # 1 of the 70s, all-time favourite Eurovision winner and favourite song from 1970 year. Quite simply because I think it's lyrics are corny, the tune is toe-curlingly sickly sweet, and the production is bland, sounding like something Val Doonican's daughter or Westlife's mum would produce. The Carpenters or The Seekers it is not.

Seven new entries this week from:
- The much covered boogie, blues rock staple taken from the Los Angeles rock group's Morrison Hotel album, it was originally released as the B-side to their single "You Make Me Real". However, USA radio DJ's flipped the single resulting in this track reaching USA #50. It would have gone much higher, but because of Jim Morrison's much publicised indiscretions running into trouble with the Police, the band were somewhat persona non grata on USA Top 40 radio at the time.
- The Dutch rock band's follow up to "Venus" was another international hit. It topped the Dutch charts and went top ten in several European countries, and reached USA #43 & UK #45.
- Another Dutch rock band, who hit the ground running with their debut single, which became a sizeable hit in Europe, and crossed over to reach USA #21, Australia #12, & New Zealand #17. Written by Dutch group's musicians Jan Visser and George Baker, this got introduced to a younger generation when it was utilized in the Quentin Tarantino film, Reservoir Dogs. As a result it got reissued and even made #1 in Japan in 1992.
- This self titled debut album cover of the 1959 song by Nigerian percussionist, Babatunde Olatunji became a popular live set number for the San Francisco Latin rock band fronted by Mexican guitarist Carlos Santana.
- The Mississippi born blues and soul singer reached USA #3 (R&B #1) with this song co-written by Jack Daniels and Bonnie Thompson and produced by Willie Henderson.
- Originally demoed in 1968 as part of the Astral Weeks recording sessions, this relatively chirpy midtempo self penned Moondance album track was released as a single peaking at USA #39. It is fair to say there are much better cuts on the album.
- The Los Angeles sunshine pop group released this easy listening R&B flavoured USA #6 hit. It was written by Skip Scarborough, Jerry Peters & Anita Poree. The first USA top ten hit (co-)written by Skip Scarborough, but certainly not the last...

Six more diverse new entries from:
- This stand alone single release was another Pete Townshend penned track, which was more hard edged than their previous Tommy album output, and in retrospect paved the way soundwise for their 1971 album Who's Next. It reached UK #19 & USA #44.
- Co-written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, and was recorded in 1969 at Juggy Sound Studio, New York. This II album cut paved the way for many acts to use a quiet (acoustic folk) verse, followed by a loud (hard rock) chorus.
- The country/folk rock supergroup now with an added 4th member being the Canadian rock singer/songwriter took this hard rock cover of the Joni Mitchell track released as lead single from their Déjà Vu album to USA #11.
- Motown's Detroit blues progressive rock cover of the Temptations original surpassed the original in the USA hitting USA #4.
- This Jamea Brown influenced track was written and recorded by American R&B singer for Stax records, reached USA #28 (R&B #5), & UK #18 (his only UK Top 40 entry). The instrumental backing was by the Bar-Kays.
- The Greek progressive rock band formed in 1967, by Vangelis Papathanassiou (keyboards), Demis Roussos (bass guitar and lead vocals), Loukas Sideras (drums and vocals), and Silver Koulouris (guitar) scored a big European hit which topped the charts in Italy.

I will also probably flop "All Kinds Of Everything". However I expect Dana to reach my chart with "It's Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas".

The Beatles spend a month at number one, and Paul McCartney announces he has left the group, albeit insiders claim the group has not been a going concern for the past six months largely due to Paul McCartney disagreeing on the appointment of Allen Klein as manager .... "The dream is over!"
Seven new entries this week from:
- Paul Simon's celebratory double meaning song comparing the art of songwriting to sleeping with a prostitute (St. Cecilia = patron saint of music in the Catholic tradition) reached USA #4, but flopped in the UK due to the public buying the blockbusting album instead, whilst the original received limited airplay.
- Songwriter Guy Fletcher (not to be confused with the Dire Straits member; but the father of Justin Fletcher, the children's TV presenter) with Doug Flett wrote this harmonic pop UK #7 & USA #82 hit for the Manchester beat group.
- Written by Toots Hibbert as a jab at their producer, Leslie Kong, because of a dispute they could no longer records as Toots & The Maytals because Leslie Kong legally owned the name ... this much covered Jamaican group's ska & reggae standard reached UK #47.
- The Birmingham pop group's first release since Carl Wayne left the group to be replaced by Jeff Lynne is this Roy Wood penned UK #7 lumbering hard rocker.
- This self penned effort by the distinctive sounding (at times) satirical singer/songwriter received some airplay but did not chart ... obviously Three Dog Night thought they could do better ....
- The Illinois funk rock band's one sizeable hit was this USA #2 written and sung by Jim Peterik, notable for its much sampled distinctive horn riff.
- The Warwickshire based psychedelic blues rock group reached UK #39 with this Frank Zappa-esque blues effort recorded live at Abbey Road.

The Dutch blue eyed R&B group grab my Retro Rewind #1 with a song about illegally buying and using cannabis. Eight new entries arrive from:
- This UK #1 was written & produced by songwriters Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, this started the dubious tradition of football teams releasing popular hit records on occasions such as this. The tune to the song was later used as the theme tune for popular BBC mid-1990s football/comedy TV programme Fantasy Football League, if only they got the comedian hosts of the show to do an England Football record ....
- The self penned romantic ballad flipside of the medium sized USA hit "Come Running" picked up airplay in its own right; and this "Moondance" album cut was later covered by Michael Buble.
- The Soul ballad written by Sylvia Robinson and Bert Keyes in 1968 which was originally recorded by Lezli Valentine with little success. This cover version by the R&B vocal groupwas produced by Sylvia Robinson and became a USA #3 (R&B #1) hit.
- The Californian born, British based folk singer cover of the Paul Simon penned "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" album cut (where he basically lifted a 1913 penned Peruvian tune and had to pay out for it in the early 1980s) reached UK #19 on RAK records.
- The Jazz musician's self penned 14 minute+ jazz rock fusion instrumental taken from his seminal "Bitches Brew" album.
- The Country legends self penned protest song criticising the Vietnam War, and war in general, as well as the stereotypical view of many politically liberal hippies, crossed over to peak at USA #19 (Country #3) & UK #21.
- This Les Reed & Geoff Stephens penned dramatic ballad saw the Welsh "Voice" score a UK #5 & USA #13 (AC #1) hit.
- The gospel flavoured debut solo single of Motown former Supreme was written and produced by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson was expected to be a Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper. However, it fell well below Berry Gordy's expectations peaking at USA #20 & UK #33.

Six new retro rewind entries this week and many of them are classics:
- McCartney wrote the song in 1969, just before the Beatles' break-up. This McCartney album rock love song was credited to his wife Linda with helping him get through the difficult time. All the instruments: guitars, bass, piano, organ and drums are played by the former Beatle. This much covered song is Paul's all time favourite composition. The Wings Over America live version became a top-ten hit in the USA and reached UK #28 in 1977.
- This UK #2 & UK #21 progressive rock song was written by their Swindon born guitarist Justin Hayward. It featured as the lead track on the 1970 album A Question of Balance.
- Culled from the 1969 album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, this Neil Young rock composition became a belated USA #55 hit.
- This melancholic Five Leaves Left album track was produced by Joe Boyd and features a stunning Robert Kirby string arrangement.
- Written by the band's lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, John Fogerty. This much covered rock track with itys distictive riff reached USA #4 & UK #3. This future Cosmo's Factory album cut topped the charts in Australia & the Netherlands.
- The Canadian rock group's melodic rocker written by Randy Bachman & Burton Cummings was released as the flipside of their USA #1 hit "American Woman". However, it picked up enough airplay to reach USA #39 on the Cashbook chart.

An all male vocal top 15 sees seven more Retro Rewind new entries appear this week from:
- Paul McCartney's ballad first recorded in September 1968, was properly recorded by the Fab Four with Billy Preston on 26th January 1969 which sounds near perfect. Unfortunately, Phil Spector vandalized the track by overdubbing 8 violins, four violas, four cellos, three trumpets, three trombones, two guitars, and a choir of 14 women, and a lush orchestral score conducted by Richard Hewson to ruin the track. Among the six reasons McCartney gave for dissolving the Beatles was that new manager Allen Klein's company, ABKCO, had caused "intolerable interference" by overdubbing "The Long and Winding Road" without consulting McCartney. Whilst during the divorce proceeding Paul's side called upon producer George Martin "so uncharacteristic" of the Beatles; and "totally inappropriately and unsympathetically over produced". Whilst Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick was even more scathing calling the finished USA #1 atrocity "Grotesque. It was an insult to Paul". Yet according to John Lennon "Spector took the tape and did a damn good job with it." Well he did not get rid of Lennon's rudimentary bass guitar playing that is for sure....
- Written by John Lennon, this Let It Be album cut first appeared on the various artists' charity compilation album No One's Gonna Change Our World in December 1969 in a semi acoustic form produced by George Martin from a February 1968 session featuring just John & Paul. Again Phil Spector added his proto-Westlife overproduced Wall of Sound cheesiness and removed the bird sounds and the charming two young children singing on the original of this much covered song recorded by the likes of David Bowie; Rufus Wainwright; & Fiona Apple.
- The tune "Groovin' With Mr. Bloe" was written for the US studio group Wind, by Bo Gentry, Paul Naumann and Kenny Laguna as an instrumental B-side. This Dick James Music produced cover went to UK #2 and featured Harry Pitch on harmonica. Pitch then went on as the harmonica player to perform the theme tune for Last of the Summer Wine!
- The Jewish American singer songwriter's African beat type composition reached USA #30.
- The folk singer/songwriter's breakthrough hit featured the Californian Gospel Choir reaching USA #6, #3 in Australia and topping the charts in Netherlands for Melanie Safka.
- A Rastafarian song written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of the Jamaican reggae group on Trojan records. It was later covered by Boney M.
- A song written by Kris Kristofferson and first recorded by Ray Stevens in 1969. It was soon covered by Johnny Cash, and Lynn Anderson before this country folk "recover" on his debut album, Kristofferson.

- This song written by Australian singer-songwriter Carl Groszman was arguably the group's first attempt at a blues rock shuffle/boogie which would become their trademark sound. It reached UK #12.
- This soulful cover of the 1968 USA #4 hit for Dion in tribute to the memory of four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy was never released as a single in the USA, but in the UK it peaked at #9, arguably leading the way for his next studio album "What's Going On"
- The Canadian pop rock group featuring wife and husband Susan & Terry "Seasons In The Sun" Jacks reached #1 in Canada and USA #2 with this melancholic harmonic track written and produced by Terry Jacks.
- The songwriting trio of Tony Morrow, David Martin and Chris Arnold reached the UK top 20 with this superior bubblegum pop effort.

Imagine a psychedelic heavy rock song going to ten nowadays...
The drummer of The Poppy Family was called Satwant Singh; a name which would become infamous a couple of decades later when a namesake assassinated Indira Gandhi.

- This Morrison Hotel dance rock cut was written by the Los Angeles blues rock group's Jim Morrison & Robby Krieger, and basically sounds like The Charlatans meets the Inspiral Carpets 20 years before those Madchester group's existed.

Eight Retro Rewind entries come from:
- The socially aware Motown psychedelic soul song written by producer Norman Whitfield with Barrett Strong. It peaked at USA #3 (R&B #2) & UK #7.
- This cover of Ray Peterson's 1959 USA top 25 hit, which did similarly well in the UK via a cover by Ronnie Hilton. Recorded live at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada this version reached USA #9, and UK #1.
- Written for Eric Burdon's first solo album in 1966 by Randy Newman, this longer, rock 'n roll and funk-inspired version topped the USA Billboard singles chart, and reached UK #3 some 30 years before the Tom Jones & Stereophonics cover of the same song.
- Written by the hard rock quartet this relatively straight forward rocker opens Side II of the album Led Zeppelin II, and is famous for its memorable guitar riff by Jimmy Page, along with its unaccompanied solo, which he improvised on the spot.
- The jazzy rock title track of the 1970 studio album written by the Northern Irish singer-songwriter remained a FM radio favourite until it was belatedly released as a single in 1977 when it peaked at USA #92.
- Written by the Birmingham Heavy Blues Metal group, it first appeared as the fourth track on the band's 1970 debut album, Black Sabbath. The lyrics of the 6 minutes song are in the first person from the point of view of Lucifer falling in love.
- The UK #22 penultimate single by the 1960s Manchester Beat pop group. This Mickie Most production was clearly influenced by Ska, Reggae, & the music of the Caribbean.
- This USA, Australian & Canadian #1 & UK #6 gospel country pop song about tolerance was written, composed, and performed by comedy singer Ray Stevens. This was a straightforward effort complete with a singalong chorus and a children choir which just about stays the right side of a schmaltzy saccharinefest ... Just about.... well compared to "Grandad", "All Kinds Of Everything", ....

Nine new entries come from:
- Written by bassist Andy Fraser and singer Paul Rodgers in the Durham Students' Union building, Dunelm House, this blues hard rock standard topped the charts in over 20 countries, but had to settle for UK #2 & USA #4 for the blues rock pioneers signed to Island records.
- Originally titled "On Our Way Home". Its songwriter Paul McCartney claimed it was dedicated to his wife-to-be Linda Eastman. This folk rocker Everly Brothers style duet between John & Paul was one of the least altered tracks on the Let It Be album by producer Phil Spector of the early 1969 aborted "Get Back" sessions.
- Written by former Motown producers, Holland–Dozier–Holland (under the pseudonym of Edythe Wayne) and Ron Dunbar for their Invictus record label. Detroit born Freda, the older sister of future member of The Supremes, Scherrie Payne; and later married to 1980s USA chart topper Gregory Abbott reached USA #3, UK #1, Canada #2 & Australia #5 with this song about an impotent or frigid lover which featured a young Ray Parker Jr on guitar.
- The New York based hard rock group comprising vocalist and guitarist Leslie West, bassist/vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight and drummer N. D. Smart reached USA #21 with their hard rock standard.
- Culled from the album Deep Purple in Rock, this loud near six minute song was written and produced by the hard rock quintet of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, organist Jon Lord, drummer Ian Paice, and singer Ian Gillan.
- The Louisiana born singer/songwriter & guitarist reached UK #21 with this self explanatory swamp rocker featuring lyrics that would render it unplayable today in this post Savile/Operation Yewtree generation.
- This self penned gospel soul track reached USA #23 (R&B #3) for the Queen of Soul produced by Arif Mardin, Jerry Wexler, and Tom Dowd taken from the album of the same name.
- This uptempo UK #6 (& Ireland #1) hit was written by the songwriting trio of Mitch Murray, Peter Callander, Geoff Stephens has apparently become a bit of an anthem in the LGBT community.
- The title track of the soul group's final album before singer/songwriter Curtis Mayfield went solo reached USA #28 (R&B #3).

At number one .... anyone who seriously thinks the output of Stock Aitken & Waterman are better than this 2nd Retro Rewind chart topper by Peter Green's incarnation of Mick Fleetwood & John McVie's group can Jack Off. Nine more new entries arrive from:
- Originally a folk ballad written and composed by John Hurley and his writing partner, Ronnie Wilkins late in 1966, this reggae version by the Jamaican born singer reached UK #9 on Trojan records, and was later covered by Paul Young.
- This country music ballad written and composed by Kris Kristofferson and released on his 1970 album Kristofferson, became a much covered song in this decade.
- Written by the former Hollies member Graham Nash. The country rock supergroup reached USA #16 with this folk rock standard taken from their Deja Vu album.
- This uptempo USA #1 (R&B #1) & UK #7 bubblegum soul pop hit was again written and produced by The Corporation (Berry Gordy, Freddie Perren, Alphonzo Mizell, and Deke Richards).
- This USA #24 (R&B #6) & UK #5 cover of the 1958 pop standard for Tommy Edwards for the Motown male vocal group. It features a vocal motif later used on Betty Boo's 1990s hit Let Me Take You There.
- Written by the New York singer/songwriter Laura Nyro who was inspired to write the song after the June 5, 1968 assassination of Robert Kennedy on her 1969 album, New York Tendaberry. This uptempo sunshine pop cover reached USA #27 for the Californian mixed race vocal quintet.
- The London-based close-harmony pop-rock band featuring singers originally from Liverpool had their second and final hit with this UK #16 release. Ironically female singer Dyan Birch went on to do a host of 1970s pop session work including on a certain Gloria Gaynor smash hit with the same title!
- The flop single culled from the minor 1970 hit psychedelic rock album (Parachutes), their 5th studio album by the 1960s London group.
- The flop (uncharacteristic sounding for them) hard rock single culled from the minor 1970 hit album (Home), their 4th studio album by the 1960s group from Southend-on-Sea fronted by Gary Brooker.

Mine isn't necessarily going to match up, and I have over a year to go until I reach 1970, but Lola, Big Yellow Taxi and Close To You all entering the same week. That would put a definite strain on me.
