It reached UK #2 & USA #22, and topped the charts in Italy and Germany; and the group would later sign to Jonathan King's UK records and rebrand as 10cc.

Mine isn't necessarily going to match up, and I have over a year to go until I reach 1970, but Lola, Big Yellow Taxi and Close To You all entering the same week. That would put a definite strain on me. Indeed. This is one of the reasons for doing this by re-imagining the internet existed way back then and you could have near instant access to songs from the USA, etc as you do today.

I had access to US hits when Paul Gambaccini was doing the US chart on Radio One.

Released too early. Ms Ciccone was just shy of her 12th birthday and nobody had heard of her. They should have tried re-releasing this 15 years later.

The result was a runaway USA #1 (R&B #3) & UK #3 hit.
- The instrumental motif track from the Rock Opera Tommy was released as the flipside to their current Live At Leeds cover of "Summertime Blues". A rival cover by The Assembled Multitude, an instrumental ensemble group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania reached USA #16.
- The hard jazz rock fusion track written by the group's Robert Lamm was recorded for their second album, Chicago, in 1970, with Peter Cetera on lead vocals and peaked at USA #4 & UK #7.
- The Alabama blues soul singer reached USA #4 (R&B #2) & UK #2 with the Grammy winning Atlantic records country soul song written by General Johnson and Ron Dunbar.

Ray Davies' rock group grab their 7th Retro Rewind number one hit to date..... Seven new entries this week from:
- This song written was a 1967 Stevie Wonder instrumental co-written with Hank Cosby which Smokey Robinson subsequently came up with lyrics and a catchy vocal melody over the top of it. The result was this two year old Motown track was released and became a USA #1 (R&B #1) & UK #1 hit.
- The Glasgow based pop rock group reached UK #3 & USA #51 with this uncharacteristic acoustic folk track which sounds like a lost Crosby Stills & Nash effort written by the group members William Campbell & Thomas McAleese.
- Written by Kurt Winter, the Canadian guitarist of this Canadian rock group, this rock track reached USA #17 & Canada #10.
- The Cardiff group formed out of the remnants of Amen Corner featured Andy Fairweather-Low on lead vocals. Their only significant hit was this gospel rocking UK #6.
- The Dutch pop rock group had another major European hit (including #1 in the Netherlands & France), top 40 in Australia & Japan & USA #102 with this moody psychedelic rock effort.
- Limping on after lead singer Dave Dee had fled the nest for a short lived solo career, this harmonic CSN meets Badfinger type folk rocker with an early synth instrumental break added to it was the remaining group's only chart hit peaking at UK #33.

- The fifth and final USA # 2 Billboard hit (they never topped the charts in a very Andy Murray/Ken Norton/Colin Montgomerie chart history) although this topped the Cash box charts where Berry Gordy Jr had less "influence" .... allegedly was an uptempo Southern shuffle rocker taken from their USA, UK, Australia, Canada, etc #1 album Cosmo's Factory.

Creedence had a similar run of no. 2s in the other charts as well; 3 others in Cashbox (and 3 and 5 with their other Billboard no. 2s), and 3 in Record World. "Lookin' Out My Back Door" was their only Cashbox no. 1, but one of three they had in Record World. A year later "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?" would top out at 3 in the 'other' charts but only 8 in Billboard.

The Godfather of Soul grabs his maiden Retro Rewind chart-topper with this bona fide funk classic. Elsewhere, nine new entries from:
- John Fogerty's white soul blues ballad track was the other side of CCR's current USA #2 hit. It received the most airplay of the two tracks in the UK on the way to UK #20.
- The R&B/soul song written by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson in 1966 which became a hit duet for Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, received a dramatic Isaac Hayes type slower gospel & orchestral pop makeover. Motown chief Berry Gordy did not like the record upon first hearing it. He hated the spoken-word passages and wanted the song to begin with the climactic chorus/bridge. It was not until radio stations nationwide were editing their own versions and adding it to their playlists that Ashford and Simpson were able to convince Gordy to release an edited three-minute version as a single. The result was the former Supreme grabbed a USA #1 (R&B #1) & UK #6 hit.
- The 1970 Spirit In The Dark album track was a cover of a 1962 soul USA #11 song written by Ahmet Ertegün and by the wife of Ben E. King, Betty Nelson. This version reached USA #11 (R&B #1) & UK #12. But perhaps is more famous for being ripped off by the title track of one of the best selling albums of 1986. As a result in 1989 Madonna and Steve Bray publishers settled with an undisclosed percentage of the royalties going to the original songwriters. (It also helps explains why Madonna ensured the USA #3 & UK #1 did not make the cut of her subsequent "Immaculate Collection" best of).
- Born James Chamber, the Jamaican ska & reggae musician recorded this then unreleased Cat Stevens composition in a quasi reggae style and reached UK #8.
- The hypnotic jazzy-folk opening track on the Northern Irish singer/songwriters third solo album, Moondance featuring a reference to jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton, was the most similar musically to his previous Astral Weeks long player.
- Culled from the 1970 UK #1 album A Question of Balance. The progressive symphonic pop song was written by band member Ray Thomas after having a row with his wife!
- The of its time UK #6 breakthrough hit was produced by Mickie Most and written by the London soul band members, Errol Brown and Tony Wilson.
- The 1960s American vocal soul group were now based in the UK. They reached UK #10 for the Bell label with this Northern Soul classic.
- The second Ben E King cover, which had already been a 1963 UK hit for Shirley Bassey, saw her Welsh male equivalent enjoy another UK #16 & USA #14 dramatic ballad hit.

After "Respect" & "I Say A Little Prayer" peaked at #2 on my Retro Rewind Chart, the Queen Of Soul gains her maiden chart-topper with a song which was recently performed by Lady Gaga (very easy to hear and work out why) in a Grammy tribute performance to Aretha Franklin. A monster ten new entries come from:
- The American singer-songwriter's calypso pop song co-written with producer Jeff Barry reached USA #8 & UK #3 with his only sizeable hit (excluding the fact he co-wrote "Mony Mony"). Sadly he died aged 28 in a shotgun incident in 1974, with opinion mixed as to where it was suicide or accidental (whilst cleaning his shotgun).
- The 39 year old London born "The Man With The Golden Voice" failed to trouble the UK Top 50 with this out of character uptempo swinging track which apparently (according to the internet) spent 29 weeks inside the top 200 over the next 18 months, due to it receiving extensive airplay on Radio 2, and even Radio 1's Kenny Everett played it a lot. He passed away aged 54 in 1985.
- The eleven-minute interpretation of the Marvin Gaye classic is taken from their 1970 album, Cosmo's Factory. After the Californian group disbanded acrimoniously it was released and peaked at USA #43.
- The 27 year old Californian born actor and teen idol reached USA #5 (AC #2) with this Tom Bahler pop tune.
- The Canadian born country pop singer signature song and chart breakthrough was penned by the Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan. It reached #2 in Canada, and crossed over to USA #8 (AC #1) & UK #23.
- A song co-written by Stevie Wonder, Syreeta Wright and Lee Garrett and produced by Wonder for the Motown group which reached USA #14 (R&B #3) & UK #20. In 1990, the song was sampled and covered by rapper Monie Love.
- The Michigan formed arena rock American band scored their maiden Billboard top 40 hit with this USA #22 progressive blues rock anti-Vietnam War track penned by Mark Farner, the lead guitarist & singer of the group.
- The New York born Melanie Anne Safka-Schekeryk second hit single was this self penned USA #32 effort.
- The Grammy nominated USA #25 hit written by Gary White and produced by Elliot Mazer was a country folk effort by the Tucson, Arizona born singer taken from her second album Silk Purse.
- Written by Russell Lewis and Herman Davis, and first recorded by Mel and Tim in 1969. This self produced soulful cover reached USA #12 (R&B #8) for "The Duke of Earl".

The former Monkee tops my Retro Rewind chart with a very different sounding and haunting self penned country rock track inspired by the Academy Award winning actress (& wife of Paul Newman) Joanne Woodward.
Elsewhere, ten new entries arrive from:
- The traditional pop song written by Roger Nichols (music) and Paul Williams (lyrics) frequently used as a wedding song peaked at USA #2 (AC #1); UK #28; Australia #6 & Canada #1.
- Written and produced by Smokey Robinson and Frank Wilson, this smooth sounding soul track reached USA #11 (R&B #4) & UK #10.
- The 1913 traditional Peruvian song giving a lyrical reworking by Paul Simon saw the New York folk pop duo gain a USA #18 (AC #6) hit. However, it topped the charts in Australia; Germany; Spain; The Netherlands; Belgium; Switzerland; & Austria. It was never released as a single in the UK, as their record label Columbia felt it would detract sales from their blockbusting album Bridge Over Troubled Water (much like when an act won't release a record on streaming sites today).
- The much covered haunting piano led title song from the 1970 album by the Canadian folk rock singer/songwriter/guitarist written about non specified environmental concerns.
- The UK #14 hit written by the songwriting team of Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway & Tony Macaulay for the Manchester group featured the session piano work of Elton John.
- The Denver, Colorado psychedelic rock band jazz rock fusion track written by band members Jerry Corbetta and Dave Riordan reached USA #3 with their breakthrough single.
- Written by Manchester singer-songwriter Graham Nash in an hour, on then girlfriend Joni Mitchell's piano in her house on Laurel Canyon (Los Angeles), this Baroque folk rock ballad was taken from the Deja Vu album. The song has been covered by numerous artists and used in numerous TV adverts and programmes despite the former Hollies member admitting he was bored of the song the day after it was recorded, yet still performs it to this day "because it does mean so much to so many people".
- The USA #3 & UK #42 folk rock song written and performed by the Massachusetts born singer/songwriter following Taylor's reaction to the suicide of Suzanne Schnerr, a childhood friend, and his experiences with drug addiction, depression and fame. It features Carole King on piano.
- The Workingman's Dead album cut with music written by Jerry Garcia, and the lyrics by Robert Hunter. "Casey Jones" is about a railroad engineer who is on the verge of a train wreck due to his train going too fast, a sleeping switch man, and another train being on the same track and headed for him whilst "high on Cocaine".
- Iain Matthews, the former lead male singer of the seminal English folk group Fairport Convention cover of the Joni Mitchell future standard featured a host of top folk musicians such as Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, and Ashley Hutchings from Fairport Convention, guitarist Mark Griffiths, drummer Gerry Conway, pedal steel player Gordon Huntley, and keyboardists Dolly Collins and Roger Coulam for an album rooted in American country music. This haunting cover reached UK #1, USA #23, & Canada #5.

The British answer to Frank Sinatra grabs my Retro Rewind chart top spot with this Woman's Lib protest anthem. Interestingly the guitarist on the session is future Womble Martin Kershaw, who then went on to have a string of novelty hits a decade later as the man behind The Snowmen.
Five new entries come from:
- The much covered hard rock Paranoid album cut about the story of a man who time travels into the future, and sees the apocalypse. In the process of returning to the present, he is turned into steel by a magnetic field. He is rendered mute, unable verbally to warn people of his time in the future and of the impending destruction. His attempts to communicate are ignored and mocked. This causes Iron Man to become angry, and drives his revenge on mankind, causing the destruction seen in his vision.
- This faithful USA #10, UK #4, Australia #2, Canada #5, etc cover of the 1958 hit song written by Jack Nance and American country music artist Conway Twitty.
- The "Trigger's Broom" UK based group formed after the disbanding of the successful 1960s Australian group the Seekers which now consisted of Eve Graham, Lyn Paul, Marty Kristian, Peter Doyle, and Paul Layton with their cover of the Melanie USA hit. It only reached UK #44, but then went on to peak elsewhere at USA #14, Canada #3, Australia #3.
- The British studio Sunshine pop group consisting of Roger Coulam (keyboards), Madeline Bell (vocalist), Roger Cook (vocalist), Alan Parker (guitarist), Herbie Flowers (bassist), and Barry Morgan (drummer) with their UK #17 & USA #64 hit written by Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway.
- The Jamaican reggae singer's cover of the Checkmates, Ltd. song equalling the original's 1969 USA chart peak reaching UK #13.

Seven new entries this week from:
- Written and sung by Roger Waters this introspective psychedelic folk track is taken from the progressive rock quartet's UK #1 album Atom Heart Mother.
- A country folk song written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster, originally recorded by Roger Miller. This "recover" is taken from his debut album Kristofferson, and was written about his then troubled lover, blues rock singer Janis Joplin ....
- The latest two part funk single written and produced by the Godfather Of Soul. It peaked at USA #15 (R&B #1). The 1987 UK #1 MARRS' Pump Up the Volume samples the "Watch Me" vocal part of the song.
- The Tommy rock opera album's final seven minute plus song "We're Not Gonna Take It" consists of three parts We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me, Feel Me/Listening To You. Pete Townshend's song was belatedly released as a single where it went on to peak at USA #12, Canada #4, Germany #2. It remained unreleased in the UK.
- This blues folk rock track was released from the group's 4th proper studio album Kiln House. This is the first of the post-Peter Green Fleetwood Mac albums, and their last album to feature Jeremy Spencer. this flop single release was credited to John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, (and the vocalist) Danny Kirwan on songwriting duties. However, Mick Fleetwood's autobiography, "Play On", claimed that Fleetwood's wife ex-Chicken Shack vocalist Christine McVie wrote the track but due to legal/contractual reasons her credits could not appear on the album on which she also provided uncredited backing vocals and piano.
