The Ten retro rewind new entries this week are from:
- This UK #1, Australia #2, Canada #30, USA #44 (& Ireland #2, #1 in New Zealand, Belgium, The Netherlands) reggae tune was written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman (who supplied the lead vocals) and was the lead single from the band's 1978 album, Bloody Tourists. It was based on the real life experiences of Justin Hayward (The Moody Blues) on holiday in Barbados.
- The UK #21 punk rock meets The Doors cover of the Bacharach & David songbook standard.
- Sheffield born Graham Fellows (& future John Shuttleworth) was the eponymous singer of the UK #4 punk novelty record first supported by John Peel's Radio 1 show, a first-person narrative of an embittered teenager whose girlfriend Julie had left him for another man named Gordon
- The punk/new wave band formed in Edinburgh released their debut album Can't Stand the Rezillos, from which this UK #17 single featuring Fay Fife on lead vocals and written by Jo Callis (aka Luke Warm) was taken.
- The lead single and fourth track from the London rock band's 1978 album Misfits. Written by Ray Davies, the song was inspired by the band's then-tumultuous state at the time, with two members bassist Andy Pyle and pianist John Gosling leaving the band during its recording. It was their biggest hit for over half a decade making USA #30 & Canada #30.
- Taken from the shelved Third/Sister Lovers album recorded in September 1974, this Alex Chilton song sounds like a Radiohead ballad two decades before they existed.
- The Skegness, Lincolnshire born hard rock singer's disco recording of the then unknown Brothers Gibb penned song reached Australia #2.
- The disco single taken from the Jamaican singer's second album Fame.
- The Brian Eno produced track became an anthem for Stiff Records (their record label at the time), and a minor success in the UK #71.
- This reworking of the Jamaican traditional children's song was the flipside of "Rivers Of Babylon", but was flipped by radio DJs to increase the life of that single.

Hoped Northern Lights could get the top spot:-) I have long forgotten this masterpiece and just rediscovered after reading this thread. What a tune. Can't get it out of my head past few days.

We'll see though if it charts higher than Jilted John.
Annie was quite upset when Graham Fellowes' hit did better than hers as she was convinced she had the better song. Graham agreed that she did, but said it was all a cultural thing of the moment that explained why his did better, and that was something she didn't quite understand.

I maybe blasphemous but Ferry's Sign of Times is really a poor effort. I'm not an english man so most likely don't get it but it's a piece of mess something you would want to have these days on deluxe version of a studio album called B Sides and Rarities etc. In my chart Who would be no.1 this week replacing Northern. And I don't watch CSI:-)

And I don't watch CSI:-) The funny thing is despite it limping to UK #37, Bryan Ferry regards it as his best solo song. The corresponding album "The Bride Stripped Bare" was a classic case of the music critics raved over it (Greil Marcus ranked it as the #1 of 1978; and it featured in Rolling Stone magazine critics top 10 albums of the year despite it only reaching USA #159); whilst it bombed in the charts. Largely because it was a very different album by Bryan Ferry standards. An angry, emotional album full of bitter songs reflecting his public humiliation at his partner Texas model Jerry Hall dumping him for Mick Jagger in 1977, which saw him team up with top session musicians Chris Spedding; Herbie Flowers; Waddy Wachtel & Rick Marotta and make a taut punkish sounding album which alienated his fan base; and did not get the punks on board to buy it.

- This cover of the English singer-songwriter Mick Jackson's 1978 white funk original, was a major international hit from their Destiny album, thanks a lot to the video. It peaked at USA #54 (R&B #3), UK #8, Australia #3, & Canada #47.
- The punkish sounding hard rocker from the Some Girls album was released as a single in Europe where it made UK #23.
- The USA #4, Canada #6, UK #43 & Australia #51 title track from the Boston arena rock band was written & produced by Tom Scholz.

The Manchester Power Punk band top my Retro Rewind chart with their signature hit. Eight new entries appear from:
- The Frank Farian written & produced Euro disco classic based on the Turkish folk song "Kâtibim", is a semi-biographical song about Grigori Rasputin, a friend and advisor of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his family during the early 20th century. It topped the charts in Australia, Germany & Austria and peaked at UK #2, & Canada #7 but oddly failed to chart in the USA.
- The (proto Ben Folds) New Jersey born singer/songwriter (uncredited) duet with Denise Marsa reached UK #3 despite failing to trouble the charts in North America.
- Taken from the Scottish punk group's debut album, Can't Stand the Rezillos is this much soundtracked cover of the Jeremy Spencer penned B-side to Fleetwood Mac's 1969 single Man Of The World.
- The Allen Reynolds produced country song written by Roger Cook and Bobby Wood which crossed over to USA #18 (Country #1), Canada #11 & UK #11.
- The UK #39 more melodic lead single from the US punk group's 4th album Road To Ruin.
- The USA #59 & Canada #66 second single from the hartland rockers Denny Cordell co-produced second album, You're Gonna Get It!
- The Newcastle Upon Tyne folk rock group's UK #56 single would be their penultimate chart entry, and last for 12 years.
- The Auckland, New Zealand formed rock band reached New Zealand #5 & Australia #1 with the first single from Dragon's fifth studio album O Zambezi. It was written by their keyboardist Paul Hewson (which was a factor in an Irish Paul Hewson taking on a stage name moniker).

30/09/1978 01 Blondie - Picture This (5wks 13-3-2-1-1) 02 Olivia Newton-John - Hopelessly Devoted To You (4wks 8-3-2-2) 03 John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John - Summer Nights (2wks 9-3) After some awful # 1s (Last Dance, Hong Kong Garden) you did a move in the right direction with my favourite top 3 from all your charts and "Ever Fallen In Love" is not bad too. In my chart Blondie had 12 number ones and "PIcture This" was their fourth chart topper. P.S : Possibly you like all my least favourite ABBA singles.
