Anne Murray much under-rated. You Needed Me is one of the best ballads ever recorded but tracks like I Just Fall In Love Again which you have just charted, Broken Hearted Me and her version of Daydream Believer all deserved big UK success. Before doing this project I only knew her for the original of You Needed Me. But whilst her material is generally to safe and middle of the road for my tastes, I do agree she was a quality singer with a better than average voice.

Bright Eyes. You've read the book, you've seen the film, now try the stew.
I think "Something Else" was the Pistols' biggest-selling single.
Of the singles on this page, the one that made the most impact on the very young vas at the time was the Lene Lovich one. It still stands out as being somewhat out there.
Oh, and...

Nine retro rewind entries from:
- Originally written by Bryan Ferry in 1977 after being humiliated when his Texas model girlfriend Jerry Hall dumped him for Mick Jagger, it became the art rock group's best selling single reaching UK #2, Canada #75, USA #44 & Australia #92. But it was a top ten hit across Europe and New Zealand & South Africa including topping the Irish charts.
- The Phil Ramone produced piano ballad was the third single from his sixth studio album 52nd Street. This much covered song peaked at USA #24, Canada #16 & Australia #19. It also topped the charts in France.
- The Northern Irish punk group's UK #16 hit was written by John O'Neill.
- The Steve Lillywhite produced UK #54 post punk hit was the Swindon group's first Colin Moulding penned (& sung) A-side; and their first with keyboardist Barry Andrews replaced by second guitarist Dave Gregory.
- Written by Leroy Bell, Thom Bell and Casey James, this Thom Bell produced Philly disco soul track stalled at UK #42, Australia #63, Canada #75 & failed to reach the USA top 100. But I guess the public was not ready for this smooth soul track, which required a subtle Norman Cook remix to turn it into an Ibiza dance classic and a #1 hit in 2003. The drummer on this track was Leon "Ndugu" Chancler who came up with the same drum break which he played on Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.
- Going all electronic disco this Ron Mael, Russell Mael, & producer Giorgio Moroder composition peaked at UK #14 & Ireland #5, taken from their No. 1 in Heaven album.
- The pub rockers UK #40 hit penned by Larry Wallis was taken from their live album, As It Happens.
- The stand alone soft rock A&M single reached UK #50. It was written & co-produced by Gallagher & Lyle who played on the recording.
- The UK #69 second and final single from the John Leckie co-produced New Wave Sound On Sound album.

Another great week in the most diverse year musically (according to the UK's Science Of Pop scientific measurement survey; & a separate USA Havard study on the Billboard charts) in the history of popular music with eleven new entries:
- The Chris Stein penned New Wave 4th single from Parallel Lines which was never a single in North America. The song later covered by Lush; Florrie; & She & Him; peaked at UK #1, Ireland #1, Australia #5, Germany #6; although strangely the French language version only made France #40.
- The Grammy Award winning disco rock classic taken from the USA #1 double album Bad Girls, was penned by Pete Bellotte (who co-produced it with Giorgio Moroder), Harold Faltermeyer & Keith Forsey. The future stripper anthem also used in the 1997 BRIT movie The Full Monty, peaked at USA #1, Australia #1, Canada #1, Switzerland #1 & UK #11, #2 in Sweden, Norway & Italy, & #5 in Germany.
- The self penned New Wave Armed Forces album cut, peaked at UK #28 & USA #101.
- The straightforward punk rock cover of the (post Buddy Holly) Crickets song made famous by the Bobby Fuller Four, appeared as the lead track on the EP The Cost of Living reaching UK #22, Ireland #24 & went top 20 in New Zealand.
- The Scottish New Wave band's synth heavy debut UK #62 single was the title track of their debut UK #30 album. It was written by Charles Burchill and Jim Kerr, & produced by John Leckie.
- After imploding early in 1978, the Punk group reformed after 15 months with Algy Ward, formerly of The Saints replacing the now departed Brian James (now part of Iggy Pop's band, and later The Lords Of The New Church). The opening track & lead single from their Chiswick records third album Machine Gun Etiquette was this catchy proto-Franz Ferdinand UK #20 hit.
- The New Wave post punk artist's follow up to "Lucky Number" reached UK #19 & Ireland #26 on Stiff records. It was penned by the Undertones Jimmy O'Neill.
- The flipside of "Does Your Mother Know" was taken from the album debuting at #1 this week "Voulez-Vous" sounding more typical of their earlier uptempo material.
- The Frank Farian formed disco R&B pop band topped the charts in Austria & Switzerland, as well as UK #9 with this cover of Neil Sedaka's B-side to his 1959 single "Oh Carol".
- The Australian pub rock band's reggae tinged soft rock title track of their second album, named after a cafè in Kings Cross, Sydney, which has became a bit of an Oz anthem.
