The personnel also included Peter Thorup, vocals; Alan Parker, guitar; Harold McNair, flute; Herbie Flowers, bass; Roger Coulam, keyboards; Barry Morgan, drums; plus Don Lusher and Bill Geldard, trombone. This UK #13 instrumental cover of the seminal Led Zeppelin II album cut was the theme music for the BBC pop programme Top of the Pops for most of the 1970s.
- The folk rock eighth track from the American pop duo's fifth and final studio album, Bridge over Troubled Water, was written by Paul Simon as a thinly failed attack on Art Garfunkel for his lack of commitment to the duo where Garfunkel went to Mexico to act in the film Catch-22 so delaying the recording of this album.
- The gospel soul single composed by Ron Miller and first performed by the Motown singer reached USA #9 (R&B #2) & UK #29.
- The UK #21 boogie rock song was written in an afternoon by Francis Rossi and Bob Young in Rossi's kitchen. Get well soon Rick Parfitt.
- This UK #32 debut solo record by the lead singer of the Rolling Stones, featured the slide guitar by Ry Cooder, from the soundtrack of Performance, in which Jagger played the leading role of Turner, a reclusive rock star. This Jack Nitzsche production also featured Russ Titelman (guitar), Randy Newman (piano), Jerry Scheff (bass) and Gene Parsons (drums).
- This gospel rock Mad Dogs & Englishmen album cut cover of the popular American torch song made famous by Julie London reached USA #11 and was a sizeable hit in Europe.
- Taken from the Florida based Southern rock band's second studio album, Idlewild South, this Gregg Allman & Robert Kim Payne composition failed to chart. Unlike cover versions by Joe Cocker (1972), Gregg Allman solo version (1974), Paul Davidson (1976), and Willie Nelson (1980).

For those wanting a bit more of killing John Barleycorn, The Wicker Man is just starting on ITV4 now.
It's really odd that "Whole Lotta Love" wasn't a bigger hit. To be fair at least most of the records above it in the national chart are at least memorable. But to me one of those - "Woodstock" - was probably the worst number 1 for over a decade, barring "Something Stupid"...

I certainly concur on the first two .... but why don't you like "Woodstock" is it because of that particular mellow English folk rock muso version compared to the CSNY cover or Joni Mitchell's original version, or does the song annoy you because it was written by the Taylor Swift of that era about being at said festival when the Canadian female songwriter in question was not actually there in person?

"Woodstock" might partly be about the timing, it seems to celebrate a future that has already passed, and which people can't be bothered to do anything about; anaemic and platitudinous. The real vibe that should have come from Woodstock was this one...

Eight new entries from:
- The Cardiff born singer, guitarist & producer blues rock cover of the Smiley Lewis standard was a global top ten hit including UK #1 & USA #4.
- The former London born hippie Marc Bolan's beguiling composition was produced by Tony Visconti. This UK #2 & USA #76 track is regarded as being hugely influential in heralding in the Glam Rock movement.
- The post-Ross Supremes' biggest hit was a psychedelic soul peace anthem written by Kenny Thomas & producer Frank Wilson which peaked at USA #7 (R&B #1) & UK #3.
- Written by the Canadian rock group's singer Burton Cummings, this communalist anthem made USA #10 & Canada #2, but failed to chart in the UK.
- The much covered USA #33 third track on the Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist album After the Gold Rush was a lament in sympathy to fellow CSN&Y bandmate, the Manchester born Graham Nash after he had found out his amicable split from Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell was due to her seeing fellow singer/songwriter James Taylor behind his back! (All very "Deja Vu" to the Calvin Harris/Taylor Swift/Tom Hiddleston love triangle).
- This Australian group's recording dates back from a April 1969 session with the former Jeff Beck Group's singer being paid a set of seat covers for his car for doing the session. This opportunistic single release failed to chart despite the rising profile of the Faces lead singer who had released two studio albums in the intervening period. Come August 1972 and the 2016 Knighted London born singer had a much higher profile, hence a reissue of the single peaked at UK #3 & USA #56.

- The proto-punk band from Ann Arbor, Michigan, seminal second album Fun House album cut written by the group's Dave Alexander, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, and Iggy Pop.

The Quiet Beatle becomes the second of the Fab Four to claim a solo Retro Rewind Chart topper.... Five new entries this week from:
- First written in 1966, this track was rejected for Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band sessions (and then with The Beatles split imminent George nixed it being used for what became the Let It Be album). In many countries around the world, this 7 minutes plus anthemic ballad was also issued on a double A-side single with "My Sweet Lord". This "All Things Must Pass album cut was co-produced by Phil Spector and is notable for its lengthy fadeout.
- This haunting folk song was written by Tim Buckley and his writing partner Larry Beckett and was first released on Buckley's 1970 album Starsailor, but had first been heard on a March 28, 1968 transmission of the final episode of The Monkees TV show. The song is Buckley's most famous due to a number of artists covering the song after his death in 1975, notably This Mortal Coil, and the fact it has the same eerie vibe, as his died far to young son Jeff's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.
- This uptempo Motown sounding USA #13 (R&B #4) & UK #34 hit was written and produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland for the group from Detroit on the Invictus record label.
- The Welsh voice reached USA #25 with this dramatic ballad produced by Peter Sullivan, featuring a Johnnie Spence string arrangement.
- This straightforward Motown cover of the 1966 Ike & Tina Turner original. Produced by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson it peaked at USA #14 & UK #11 for the "Magnificent 7".

- This uncommercial USA #43 single was culled from the former Beatles debut solo album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band where it was the opening track. It was written as a cry to both his parents, who abandoned him in his childhood. His father, Alf, left the family when John was an infant. His mother, Julia, didn't live with her son, although they had a good relationship; she was hit and killed in a car accident on 15 July 1958 by a drunk off-duty policeman, when John was aged 17. The track has been covered by the likes of Barbra Streisand; Christina Aguilera; and Shelby Lynne.
- The Atom Heart Mother album pastoral folk ballad cut was written by guitarist David Gilmour, and has received several live airing since. The bell sounds heard at the beginning and the end of the song were later used again in "High Hopes" from their album The Division Bell and in "Louder than Words" from their album The Endless River.
- This USA #19 rock song was written by Billy Fox, Tommy Kaye, and January Tyme and featured on their 1970 album, Naturally.
- The Illnois born 1970s cult singer/songwriter enjoyed his biggest commercial success with his self penned USA #54 Power Pop hit taken from his USA top 30 album Emitt Rhodes.

The Brothers Gibb score their second Retro Rewind chart-topper with this haunting changing tempo track (which is Noel Gallagher's favourite Bee Gees song, which he accurately IMHO described as the missing link between The Beatles & Take That!).
Eight new entries are from:
- The 1960s Washington born folk singer known as "Judy Blue Eyes" reached USA #15, UK #5, & Australia #10 with this cover of the Christian hymn written by John Newton which was published in 1779.
- Written by pre Beatles teen idol Paul Anka, this uptempo pop number reached UK #13, USA #2, Canada #1, and was a top ten hit across Europe and Australia.
- Written by the New York art rock group's then-leader Lou Reed, this Loaded album cut was a tribute to the music that inspired him, and is musically The Strokes 30 years before Julian Casablancas' group existed..
- The Canadian folk songwriter's USA #5 (AC #1) & UK #30 hit which topped his native national pop charts was written about his impending divorce at his Toronto house. In 1986 he launched a plagiarism lawsuit against the 1977 George Benson hit written by Michael Masser & Linda Creed "The Greatest Love Of All" (which Whitney Houston turned into a global 1986 smash hit), but dropped the case after Linda Creed died of cancer in return of an undisclosed sum or royalties going to cancer related charities.
- The Florida born R&B soul singer reached USA #30 (R&B #12) with this Atlantic soul recording.
- Taken from the 5th studio album by Marc Bolan's folk rock outfit. This Tony Visconti produced track had an electric rock sound and featured Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman (both of The Turtles) on backing vocals, so setting a template for feature releases.
- This stunning haunting Pete Ham folk composition from the Swansea/Liverpool power pop group's No Dice album produced by Geoff Emerick, was inspired from Act 5, Scene 2 of Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra." After Caesar leaves Cleopatra, thinking he has secured her for his own purposes, Cleopatra reveals to her ladies that she has already planned to kill herself. Iras, says to her, "Finish, good Lady, the bright day is done, and we are for the dark."
- This country rock 1970 American Beauty album cut was written by Robert Hunter and Bob Weir. A live version of this recording was released as a single in 1973 peaking at USA #91.

Seven new entries on the Retro Rewind Chart from:
- The Melbourne pop band's Australian #1, UK #2 & USA #44 hit which was inspired by the Mungo Jerry 1970 smash hit "In The Summertime" and it was produced by Australian record producer David MacKay (more of whom later).
- The London based power rock trio consisting of three members who had all been journeyman musicians during the 1960s Beat, psychedelic & blues boom, reached UK #3 & USA #40 with their only hit. After the band's demise, Tony Ashton went on to play for Medicine Head, and was briefly in Family before teaming up again with Deep Purple's Jon Lord in Ashton & Lord. Later still he appeared with Lord and Purple's drummer Ian Paice as Paice Ashton Lord. Dyke and then Gardner joined Badger.
- The self penned spoken word opening track from the Stax producer, musician & songwriter's 1970 soul album ...To Be Continued.
- Written by the Canadian group's guitarist Robbie Robertson. This roots rock Cajun track was written about being on death row for murdering an annoying colleague. Robbie Robertson later admitted the USA #62 hit was written about Richard Manuel, the song's principal singer. Ouch!
- Motown's white rock band reached USA #17 with the Detroit group's self penned progressive folk rock effort.
- The Yorkshire born Anthony Fitzgerald discovered and managed by Harvey Lisberg, his debut single reached UK #21 set his more successful template by being a dramatic big-voiced numbers written by Mitch Murray and Peter Callander.

The Pinner, Middlesex born Reginald Dwight scores his maiden Retro Rewind Chart topping track with a stonewall GOAT pop classic contender .... I suspect this won't be the last time he tops my chart during the 1970s....
Seven new entries arrive from:
- The classic near 7 minutes 30 seconds improvised blues rock ballad written by Jimmy Page; John Paul Jones & Robert Plant was taken from their III album. The highlight being Jimmy Page's guitar solo during the middle of the track.
- The Ray Davies penned Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One album track about travelling on tour and wishing to be back home, was memorably used in the Wes Anderson 2007 film The Darjeeling Limited.
- The divisive blues rock song penned by the Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist taken from his After The Goldrush album was describing the racism towards blacks in the American South, and asking the Deep South "when will you pay them back?". This "condescending and accusatory" tone of the lyrics resulted in Neil Young getting banned from some gigs in the Deep South, and resulting in the Southern American rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd replying with "Sweet Home Alabama".
- The Elton John & Bernie Taupin composed 6 minutes + song taken from his third album Tumbleweed Connection tells the story of a young Confederate whose father has just been killed during the American Civil War. This soft rock Americana song later featured in the 2005 film Elizabethtown, starring Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst.
- The opening track from the soft rock group's third album Manna, was a more rocking affair, and perhaps as this David Gates composition was going against their stereotype it peaked at USA #28.
- This self penned Stax single release peaked at USA #25 (R&B #1) for the 53 year old Mississippi born singer.
- This mid tempo cover of a 1970 The Pipkins album cut, was written by Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway, Anthony Hiller, & J. Goodison and reached UK #19.

Nine more Retro Rewind New entries come from:
- The caustic folk song (in the words of John Lennon) "about working class individuals being processed into the middle classes, into the machine". This much covered John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album cut also appeared as the B-side of the title track single from his next commercial album "Imagine".
- Written by George Harrison (verse) and Bob Dylan (chorus), this bluesy mellow rock track featuring Eric Clapton on guitar, was the opening cut on side 1 of the "All Things Must Pass" album.
- Written by the southern soul singer George Jackson for the Jackson 5 (you could never guess by listening to this recording .... not!); the family Motown group recorded it, only for Berry Gordy Jr to reject it!. Hence, the Salt Lake City family group recorded resulting in a USA #1 & Canada hit for their white equivalent.
- This much covered roots rock ballad written and produced by John Fogerty which peaked at USA #8 & UK #36, was written about the state of the group due to the fact they had achieved their ambitions but were now unhappy. They split acrimoniously by the end of 1972.
- Written by Eric Clapton and Bobby Whitlock, as an unrequited love song for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend George Harrison, and appears on the 1970 double album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Culled as a single it reached USA #91.
- The Midland pioneering Hard Rock group's 7 minute long song about Vietnam veterans getting addicted to Heroin to get over the atrocities of war.
- Produced by its writer Sly Stone this USA #32 rerecording of the Sly & The Family Stone's 1969 Stand album cut, in retrospect gave a strong indication as to the sound of the next Sly & The Family Stone album "There's A Riot Goin' On".
- The Michigan hard rock group's cover of the 1966 Animals hit, became a minor UK #50, but remained unreleased in the USA.
- Written by country music singer-songwriter Mac Davis, the We Gotta Start Lovin' album track was released as a single and peaked at USA #11 (AC #1) & Canada #5.
